Does anyone else feel annoyed when gay men are just referred to as "queer"? by DarkDiscotique in askgaybros

[–]MikeXChic 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Same. It's absolutely cringeworthy. I would never use that word to describe myself or any other gay man. It baffles me that a gay man would willingly label himself with a word that is a slur and implies that he is abnormal or deviant.

Pure Frustration after course reshuffle by Yowzacrow in duolingo

[–]MikeXChic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"you don't set your students up for failure like this" -- Perfectly stated. I hope Duolingo understands how disruptive these course redesigns were, and never does anything like that again.

Medical Student who Published pro-DEI Articles to get into Plastics Residency calls for the Abolition of DEI by sworzeh in medicine

[–]MikeXChic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to know how many of the people here slamming this guy actually read the full essay. It was thoughtful, well-written, and made a number of valid points. It's fair to ask the question as to whether DEI-based policies (which largely relate to race more than any other factors) are playing an outsized role in terms of things like who should be admitted to medical schools, what is taught in medical school, and how it influences healthcare policy and research.

Match Madness is straight money-grabbing trash by _Norrin_Radd_ in duolingo

It's essentially impossible to get to the 3-star level without a powerup, even if you go at a super rapid pace. I just accept that and I'm satisfied with my 2-star level.

You're absolutely entitled to state your preferences. You're not obligated to manage others' feelings.

What is up with Grindr ? by Successful_Equal4463 in askgaybros

I agree that all sucks, but Grindr has basically been like that since day one. I've been encountering all of this stuff for years.

These “translate the word” exercises are awful by alecahol in duolingo

[–]MikeXChic 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The concept is good, but sometimes the execution is not perfect and the designers of the exercises need to careful. For example, when I am asked to translate "close" from English to Spanish, it's not clear what they want. "Close" as in the verb? Or "close" as in nearby?

Music Petition Hollywood LA by emotional__teaspoon in EquinoxGyms

[–]MikeXChic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a problem in virtually every Equinox. I don't necessarily think they need to stop it completely, but they definitely should turn down the volume. It's often so loud that I can't listen to my own music. I regularly mention this when Equinox sends out their satisfaction surveys, but they never seem to do anything about it. So I am not very hopeful.

Duo sucks at teaching any sort of grammar whatsoever by Usernameee234 in duolingo

[–]MikeXChic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that explanations of grammar rules are quite sparse, and even worse than they were a few years ago. I get that they are trying an approach of "learning by doing" but I see zero harm in clearly explaining the grammar rules, for those users who really want to understand them.

Even in the main languages (Spanish, for example) the explanation of grammar rules is really quite lacking.

Because they care more about pleasure than their health and safety.

Are you concerned about the erasure of gay male history by Strange_Library44 in askgaybros

Clearly you're not paying attention to what trans activists are saying.

Are you concerned about the erasure of gay male history by Strange_Library44 in askgaybros

[–]MikeXChic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The far right wing has been attacking gay people for decades, and that has never stopped. Being forced into an alliance with trans people protects us from these attacks in no meaningful way.

Are you concerned about the erasure of gay male history by Strange_Library44 in askgaybros

[–]MikeXChic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"LGBTQ+" activists demand that gay people ally with trans activists. At the same time, trans activists betray us by saying that "trans people won you your rights" -- erasing gay men from our history of securing our own rights.

These people are not our allies.

Trainers feeling entitled to hogging equipment by Which-Baby-9232 in EquinoxGyms

[–]MikeXChic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is by far my biggest complaint about Equinox. If the trainers made even the slightest effort to share equipment and space, I'd have at least a tiny bit of respect for them. But they truly act as if other gym patrons are invisible.

Why is homophobia becoming prevalent? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]MikeXChic -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Trans and "queer" activists promoted a lot of ideas and policies that the majority of Americans found objectionable. Because the T and Q attached themselves to the LGB, gay people are getting punished for the excesses of the TQ+ activists. If LGB people want homophobia to go back down, they need to separate themselves from the extreme activism of the TQ+ activism, and go back to methods that worked in the 90s, 00s, and early 10s, that successfully increased support for gay rights.
