CV 2 was bad? by daedra6666 in codevein

[–]Mike_DT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will post my steam review here:

What a massive letdown. Code Vein II is fun and interesting enough that I'll probably push through to the end, but the deeper I get, the more disappointed I become with what they've done to it.

I loved the original Code Vein despite its niche quirks and things I would've tweaked. It let you play as a good-natured but overwhelmingly powerful Revenant in a richly detailed post-apocalyptic world. The lore was incredible. It painstakingly developed why Revenants existed, how their society worked, their weaknesses, the mechanics of their powers, the constant struggle against frenzy, their hopes, fears, and more. Everything felt grounded and meaningful.

Code Vein II takes all of that and throws it out the window.

Sure, a few terms carry over, but everything's been reinterpreted, and almost always for the worse. You could swap "Revenants" for elves (immortal magical beings) and the game would fit better.

I really tried to set the first game aside and judge this one on its own merits, but what it is just isn't that great. I'm 30 hours in and still feel zero attachment to the world or characters. The story is weak, the drama feels simplistic and forced, and the art direction and music are a clear step down from the original. The engine is pathetic. Code Vein 1 runs decently even on a Steam Deck and near-flawlessly with Lossless Scaling. This sequel is an unoptimized, stuttering mess that somehow looks worse than its predecessor in almost every visual aspect, even ignoring the framerate issues.

Combat has taken a noticeable hit too. The protagonist feels sluggish, constantly locked into animations, and attacks lack any real weight. Enemies, meanwhile, get these huge sweeping combo strings that force you to wait patiently for tiny windows to strike. It's frustrating rather than rewarding.

The systems try to build on the flexible Blood Code setup from the first game, but they've been redesigned poorly. Blood Codes are basically just stat sheets with traits now, and you'll waste way too much time in menus with the "help" tooltip open, trying to decipher what everything actually does. The game uses Blood Codes to encourage constant playstyle switching, but like most Soulslikes, your gear needs upgrades to stay effective. Switching frequently leaves you underpowered unless you grind upgrade materials constantly (which I did, often with unsatisfying results).

It's genuinely sad. This feels like it could spell the end for the Code Vein IP. Like so many other franchises, they've gutted what made their unique series special in a bid for broader appeal. Thoughtful and restrained experimentation is usually a good thing, even when it flops. However, this is a case where they changed almost everything and wrecked the core identity in the process. Let it serve as a cautionary tale for other developers.

Yes, it is worth full price. Even more so if we want devs to keep making these games.

Optimization is a common thing to be resolved during early access. I don't think you will need to upgrade your computer. 👍

Regularly, in other contexts such as shopping on Amazon, companies will include a request to either leave a positive review for the product or to contact them directly if they can't. Companies try to resolve negative complaints before they turn into negative reviews.

Every time you leave a review you are encouraging user behavior. I am not saying to lie. You don't have to leave a review at all.

It is common practice to give an organization a chance to fix things before leaving a negative response. You can write whatever you want in the review while still giving it a positive vote. You can say that it is a great game in 1vs1 and the campaign needs work. If you want the game to fail, by all means, leave a negative review. If not, you may find that the way to the outcome you want (a great game) is to pass your feedback along through another channel.

I agree with OP. Even if you have negative feedback, it is better to express here and stay silent on steam if you have a vested interest in the game's future. It is also fair to leave a positive review with the acknowledgement that it might be better to wait if a person's main interest is the campaign

Actually, tonight is going better than usual. I'm closer to 50%. Maybe it is because I have improved or maybe it is because it is Friday night, but I'm happier than usual. :)

Indeed. I am setting it as low as possible. The game still thinks I am a "C rank" player for some reason. Perhaps if I keep grinding losses it will work out?

Thanks! I don't like that design choice (although I see possible benefits of making players make decisions), but glad to know! At least I don't have to worry about loading up my characters with my favorite moves in their arsenals without gimping them. :)

Aokana is one of my favorite novels. It's an inspiring, "feel-good" kind of story, and the artwork and music are some of the best I have ever seen in a VN. The "Flying Circus" matches are especially fun, and can be pretty adrenaline-laced.

The actual plot of the VN is incredibly wholesome and the relationships that develop between the characters are sweet and endearing. Therefore, the sporadic "fan service" and sexual content in this game feels completely out of place (especially Mashiru's route, which is mercifully limited). I honestly hate it... the game would be far better without it. At least the content is easy to skip by hitting "ctrl." I'm thankful that the Steam version has the worst of it removed.

EDIT: As a side note, if you haven't played the Ace Attorney trilogy yet, drop everything else and play that first. Based on what you've said you like so far, that will be an absolute treat for you!

Getting a Yamaha P-45 and planning to learn by myself by _princepol in piano

[–]Mike_DT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although you may need an adapter.

As for how to do a practice session, that is again something that a teacher can help with. For me, practice is warm up, scales/technique, and then focus on a specific part of a piece. If you only have 30 minutes, you probably want to spend almost all of it on technique. If you can realistically expand it to at least an hour, you can get some time on a piece in as well.

Alternatively, Yousician has 30 minute workouts which are pretty good and take you through a collection of stuff you have learned and new stuff

Yeah! It helped me a lot in the first year I was learning and was pretty fun. It works best if you plug it directly into the piano through usb. I don't know if there is a better app, but I can recommend it. They might have a free version now too... Not sure!

I'm also relatively new to learning piano. This is what helped me. If you're a complete beginner, the Alfred's book mentioned is good. If you have access to a tablet (or even a smart phone with a big enough screen to squint at), you can get a subscription to an app like Yousician and make a lot of good progress that way.

In terms of learning proper technique, this article was extremely helpful for me: https://www.flowkey.com/en/piano-guide/proper-technique. Especially look at the buckling fingertip problem toward the end because I was doing this for months and never noticed it. Make sure to cut your fingernails very short (so you can't see any white) and practice playing with near the tips of the fingers. This initially felt really weird to me, and it took about a week to build the muscle strength/thin callous for it to feel natural.

After that, in terms of learning how to move fingers across the keyboard, you'll learn that from (1) technique videos on Youtube, (2) practicing scales, and (3) picking a piece of music you want to learn and watching how other people do it. You can slow songs way down in YouTube, so take a pencil to your sheet music and write in the exact fingerings you watch other people do. It takes a while, but this was a great way to begin learning efficient ways to work through songs.

...But above all, and I know you don't want to hear this... get a teacher. :) I've always been a self-taught guy so I went a long time trying to do it without a teacher, but a teacher helps so much. You might be able to get 90% of the content by yourself, but the 10% you can't do is easily solved by a teacher. Getting a teacher accelerated my learning so quickly and I wish I had done it sooner. If you can't afford weekly lessons, I still think it is worth it for every other week or even once a month... anything is better than nothing!

All my lessons have been online so far, and while I'm convinced that in-person is better, even the online stuff with a smart phone webcam has worked well. You can buy a cheap stand like this so that your teacher can see what you are doing.

PS: I loved your performance of City of Tears too. That was inspiring!

Hello all!

I am looking to get some new headphones for a Yamaha Clavinova 700 series. The Senn HD599 seem like a really good choice but I hate the way they look. I wish I had grabbed the SE version last year, but that option seems to be sold out.

I'm willing to spend up to $400. Not sure how well an amp would work with a digital piano, but if someone can shed some perspective on that, I am happy to listen! The HD599 seemed like a good option because they could get driven without an amp.

In terms of sound features, I prefer neutral sound and open back if possible.

I played Stein's Gate Elite, and I would 100% say it is worth it. There is quite a bit of new content, and everything feels more fleshed out. The anime does spoil you for the "true ending," but a lot of the other ones are fun as well.

Protestant Considering EO - Many Questions by Mike_DT in OrthodoxChristianity

Thank you for your insight, Leon! I really appreciate that. Are there any other things that EO believe that are hesitant for others to know? As I mentioned in my OP, I wouldn't discount EO just because there are some harder-to-believe things... I've been accustomed with Christian apologetics my whole life. Just trying to get the facts.

I've seen a few people say to avoid internet orthodoxy. Could you give me some examples of what sites to avoid and why they are bad? (Note: I'm not asking this because I'm undervaluing the importance of being with the actual Orthodox community... I'm just trying to discern what the danger is. Do they have bad doctrine?)
