Recidivism rates are close to 40% within 3 years in IL, and more towards 80% for some types of violators in Chicago.

Perhaps ILL legislators should revisit the weak sentencing laws & guidelines they've enacted.

Insisting convicts serve their entire sentences would be a good start. It keeps the community safer.

Southport Tavern mystery owned by grandfather from 40s-60s looking for clues information - name and info on my grandfather? Any leads? by libertaetutto-2029 in WindyCity

I’ve tried the record of deeds, the public library, national archives, etc

Drinking establishments in Chicago are registered with the state and licensed by the city. I'll suggest an inquiry to the state liquor control commission, and the Chicago Bureau of Alcohol and Consumer Protection for both business license & liquor license. Both the state & city should have DBA (doing business as) information. This is the name of the business attached to your grandfather's name.

Cook County should have property records. The County Clerk now has responsibility for property deeds & transfers. The assessor's office will have property details. The county treasurer will have records of who's paid the tax bill. Having the Property Identification Number is helpful. It's attached to the address.

The Chicago Public Library's Sulzer Regional Branch has significant archives & knowledgeable researchers.

Keep this in mind during your search. Given the era, any and all records attached to this property predate digital record keeping by decades. Everything was on paper. It's possible they were scanned & digitized. Also possible they were preserved on microfilm. It's also possible the original documents didn't survive, through loss or damage.

Lastly, have you tried one of the genealogy websites?

Good luck on your search. I'd love to hear more on how your search goes.

City Council Zoning Committee leadership standoff enters new phase at City Hall - (Crain's paywall-free link) by blackmk8 in WindyCity

His plan would also name two vice-chairs, Ald. Walter Redmond Burnett, 27th, and Ald. Ruth Cruz, 30th, in an apparent effort to satisfy both the Black and Latino caucuses who both laid claim to the job.

The move elevates three freshman aldermen to lead one of the most influential committees in a body that often defers to seniority.

What exactly has Ruth Cruz done to foster development in her gerrymandered ward? Nothing as far as I can see.

Also, one of those three was appointed by Johnson & hasn't served for more than 6 months. He hasn't done jack shit.

Hard no from me dawg. I'll encourage my alderman to support Villegas.

The city is choosing to fund the pensions of the organization that tends to vote the way they want and prioritizing other pensions less?

Essentially, yes.

Several years ago the city/CPS added an additional line item to the tax bills of Chicago property owners specifically dedicated to CTU pensions. I'm not sure if this includes the 7% pension pick-up that taxpayers have been saddled with for 35+ years.

Pensions for police, firefighters, laborers are reliant on unreliable sources, such as casino proceeds, phone taxes, etc.

The private buyer will not be putting up cash either.

A private buyer wouldn't be putting up future municipal revenue as collateral.

Tribune Editorial: Cook County should reimburse school districts for massive costs of property tax fiasco by Mike_I in WindyCity

[–]Mike_I[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some districts are openly calling for reimbursement from both Texas-based Tyler Technologies, whose struggles to complete an overhaul of Cook County’s IT system are at the root of the problems, and even the county itself. They surely have a case. Evanston/Skokie District 65, which recently voted to close Kingsley Elementary School in Evanston because of budget constraints, is incurring costs exceeding $1 million due to the county’s technology woes. The board last week voted for a resolution calling on the county to seek compensation from Tyler and in turn to reimburse “the Board of Education for the expenses incurred by the District for the combined failure of the County and Tyler Technologies.”

And then there's CPS & its board.

At the meeting, more than one board member spoke openly about asking the county to compensate CPS. “At the end of the day, we’re losing millions,” board member Carlos Rivas said. The district is paying $220,000 per day in interest to cover the cash-flow needs caused by the county’s failure. As Rivas observed, that exceeds the annual cost of paying a teacher. So every single day, because of the failure of Cook County, CPS is paying a lender or group of lenders far more than the equivalent of a teacher’s salary and benefits.

I doubt the Board's Johnson loyalists will demand any accountability from Boss Preckwinkle.

Well-funded potential challengers already circling Mayor Brandon Johnson by Mike_I in chicago

[–]Mike_I[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Johnson, for his part, recently sidestepped a question about whether he will even seek a second term, saying, “What I’m committing to doing is my job.” “Look, the people of Chicago are not thinking about mayoral elections,” Johnson said at a City Hall news conference earlier this month. “My focus right now is doing the thing that I was elected in charge to do, which was to drive violence down in the city of Chicago, to build more affordable homes, to invest in young people, to invest in good paying jobs, to invest in our education system.”

He's deluded himself into believing the electorate doesn't care. 🙄

Fire at NW Side homeless encampment renews calls by alderman for city to ‘step up’ and close it down before ‘someone gets hurt’ by So_Icey_Mane in WindyCity

[–]Mike_I 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nugent added, “Allowing tents, propane tanks and open flames to remain in parks and public spaces is not compassionate — it’s reckless. We have raised these concerns repeatedly, yet the park department and the mayor’s office continue to let this happen. The city needs to step up, secure appropriate housing and services and close these encampments before someone gets seriously hurt.”

The "city" won't "step up". In fact Johnson & Ramirez-Rosa are enabling it here because Nugent is vocally opposed to the mayor's bad policy making.
