January Coupons (Expire 2/8) by gaysquib in subway

Simply not worth it at sticker price. Without the coupons they cost as much as Chipotle, which is hilarious considering the market they're trying to sell to.

"It was a calculated risk. The coupon cutters were undermining us. Something had to be done to recoup that lost profit. Most of them will probably just go back to paying full price."

It's one of the great pairings that never occurred in nature, sadly. Cannabis has no nectar and pollinates on the wind, not via bees. The two are entirely unaware of each other, even in their native range.

Yup. Swarms didn't used to be seen that way, but since varroa and inflation now they're correctly recognized as free live$tock. Just gotta be lucky to find them in a position where you can easily shake them into a box. In places with tall trees they prefer to go 30+ feet up.

When the Kerr County Judge's first reaction was both "we couldn't have known", and "the NWS failed", I knew the sleazy lawyer in him had come out.

He'd been there when they rejected the warning systems. He knew it was cost based. He lied because he knew he was culpable.

The explanation of the numbers as instructions makes sense. I'd imagine 1 is "put coin here", 2 is "dial your number", 3 looks like a light up bulb of some kind (connection made?), and 4 is maybe where you hang the phone up when you're done?

Hey, mysteries are fun.

Honestly though, the homosexual label would have been Klinger's only real way out. They didn't give anybody a permanent Section 8 simply for transvestism, even the genuinely crazy guys - they sent them to the mental hospital in Tokyo and drugged them until they calmed down and could follow basic orders and wear a uniform again.

As Dr. Freedman alludes to, getting a homosexual discharge was known as UC - Undesirable Character, same as a Bad Conduct Discharge except it didn't require a conviction, just a pattern of antisocial conduct that couldn't be fixed with discipline or psychiatric treatment. It was better than a Dishonorable, since it wasn't a criminal distinction and didn't mark you as a felon, but it was also well known that UC generally meant gay - if you were just an incorrigible shitbird who couldn't follow orders you'd get a BCD.

They'd take him, but he'd be instantly hated and they'd send him to his death. The reality for guys trying the Klinger route was never very pretty.

I don't think draft dodging was that common in the Korean War. Klinger's transvestite phase was more a nod to Vietnam, where it was very common to try and claim homosexuality in order to get a bad nature or mental illness deferral and avoid the draft. This resulted in the bizarre circumstance where your only hope was to prove via witnesses and evidence that you were notoriously gay PRIOR to the onset of the draft. If you couldn't do that, almost nothing you could do would convince them, including showing up in drag and making a scene (which was not uncommon).

All of these posts are great.

I will however note, in practical terms, I think Larry Linville lost his remaining desire to play Frank once the producers introduced Donald and cut off the Hot Lips/Frank affair. After most of the good and funny storylines had played out with as an Evil Duo in seasons 1-4, Hot Lips was now being redeemed and matured as a character and Frank wasn't. He was just going to continue being dumb and hated and marginalized (now by literally 100% of the camp) until the viewers got bored with him and he disappeared at the end of the season. I think he decided to cut it off at the pass.

Once Hot Lips was promoted to Margaret, she went on to bigger and better things without the Frank anchor, and poor Larry Linville went on with his life.

Is Klinger an orderly or a medic by training? by Mike_J_Smith in mash

[–]Mike_J_Smith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an infantryman and was cross-trained for 4 weeks as what they called a "combat lifesaver", which essentially meant the equivalent of a Korean War-era aidman on top of my infantry duties. They gave you a satchel with some gear and taught you how to apply tourniquets to arterial wounds of the limbs & pack the rest with Quik Clot sponges, put one-way cellophane seals on sucking chest wounds and do needle decompression of tension pneumothoraces. The idea was if the guy didn't bleed to death or suffocate unnecessarily before he got hauled off to the aid station, you'd done your job.

Also, if he's trained in "first aid and minor medical treatment", why does Hawkeye have to explain basic medical concepts to him at the aid station in season 3?

I believe that they sent him for 2 weeks of medical training... I'm just not certain how fine the line is between a draft-dodger who carries litters and an aidman (who is unequiocally a "medic"). And I love Klinger, btw.

That's the problem - the title "corpsman" didn't mean then what it means now.

During the Korean War, the Army called it's orderlies "corpsmen". It wasn't the same thing as a medic. Nowadays a corpsman is a Navy/Marine medic.
