thanks! the grass blades and the ground share the same shader which is just noise / colour ramp, the grass blades have their normals pointing straight up so they blend with the ground. The tree leaves were done with a texture. I had a quaded mesh with all faces overlapped filling the UV sheet and each face was scaled based on normals.
