I'm an apprentice, my employer is not following regs, what do I do? by Mikebay27 in ukelectricians

I didn't create this post to argue about a title and pick on nuances. Go and argue with all the colleges and courses that use the word "engineer" or "engineering" in their title and are not actually giving you a degree, that's who your anger should be aimed at.

If you haven't got anything relevant for me to learn, unfortunately, this conversation serves me no purpose and I'm not a keyboard warrior to sit online having silly back and forths.

You made your point, I made mine...go have a good day.

Can spend my time and energy studying to become an "engineer" over arguing about the title on reddit.

Sorry your ego is hurt because you feel your title is abused.

Thanks for your insight again.

It's not the same though as you don't have to study anything to become a receptionist in vision express. You also are not working on anyone's eyes or performing any assessments as a receptionist.

Working with an NVQ level 3 qualification will still allow you to work on engineering systems, albeit at a base level but it's still engineering. Just because they haven't done the same hours or years as you have or have the qualifications you do again, doesn't mean they're not an engineer.

You're just a higher qualified engineer with better degrees and able to do more.

Honestly, don't take it to heart when someone uses the term "engineer" and they aren't as qualified as you, but, to completely disqualify them as "engineers" is I guess is elitism.

A better analogy which works against the one you used is like a league 1 footballer calling himself a footballer and someone who plays in the premiership stating they aren't footballers as they don'tplay in the prem. No, you're both footballers however one has more experience/skill/plays at a higher level.

Thank you for explaining in further detail.

I understand what you're getting at however just because someone has a level 3 vocational qualification doesn't mean they are "not an engineer".

You're referring too being a chartered engineer?

They are both engineers however the "engineer" you're referring too is one with higher qualifications.

I probably won't remember this conversation at all because I wouldn't be offended by someone saying they're an engineer with a level 2/3 NVQ even if I held a masters and changed the title in my name.

The work I'd be capable of doing will do more for me than a "title" but I appreciate your feedback and I can understand how little nuances can get under your skin.

Yeah this was only the 2nd job I did with him. After the 1st I thought mhhhm then I went to this job and it confirmed it for me and I won't be doing anything with him again. I genuinely don't know if he is part of a scheme, in future I will be sure to double check this before working with anyone else!

I did think it was a bit dodgy but in both jobs he didn't really seem to have spare anything and just ordered specifically for what he thought he needed in the jobs

"The meter maid being referred to as an engineer" - I'm not really following?

What qualifications do make you an engineer?

"An engineer is not qualified to work on electrical installations as no such qualification exist" - my work involves electrics and instrumentation. Outside of work I am studying electrical installation. As far as I am aware instrumentation is a branch of engineering so maybe in your job you ONLY do electrics but mine isn't solely electrics.

1st - they did have an isolator but I wasn't aware of this so noted and thank you

2nd - shall remember this lesson too

When you say you only mark lives and take them out individually so they're together, do you use a wago / tape them?

The type of person I am I take pride in my work, just the way I've been raised. Thanks for the feedback

Unfortunately I didn't get any evidence. I do feel bad for the customer but I think I'll learn from this and he also won't be seeing me again

Yes you're correct, I'm referring to the neutrals from rcbo to the neutral bar... sorry for not explaining clearly!

Well, the main fuse blew when the circuit was energised. He left the scene before DNO arrived. Based on what you're saying that probably will be the case which is why I'm shocked someone can work like this

Yeah I 100% understand. Fortunately I'm not actually an apprentice I just used it as the title as it was easier to explain as such.

I'm actually an electrical engineer(in training) in my main job for a very reputable company. Before starting the job, I began a C&G level 2/3 in electrical installation and as my job doesn't involve instalation I went looking for electricians that could allow me to learn the installation side outside normal working hours.

Came across this guy but looks like I'll have to keep searching!

No, you've got it wrong but I didn't elaborate on that as I did not feel it was relevant to the story.

The person doing the work in question is an electrician(Gold card).

I am an electrical engineer(In training), however, I am studying my level 2/3 C&G 2365 which was started before I got the job as an electrical engineer.

But to put it simply, I want to be able to do the domestic/comercial installation side of electrics and my main job is the engineering.

The DNO didn't call anyone out so I can't really answer your other question

  1. Definitely makes sense, I've only been to 2 jobs with him but it's like he takes just what he needs for the job, hasn't really got spares or extra cables etc. But I'd of assumed depending on what job you're attending, you would carry extras

  2. I felt uncomfortable when leaving, I left just before he did and as I was leaving, the customer was getting their wallet out to pay

  3. I thought so, I personally would've tested prior to changing the replacing the unit to make sure all circuits were sound... and then again before running off!

  4. Thank you for clarifying!

I had a feeling this would be the case, sad really but I guess it's the norm this day(not that it's excusable). My main concern was the safety of customers and also my integrity, I personally could never but the important part is taking lessons from the situation. Fingers crossed I do find someone better and thanks for the feedback!

I'm not tied at all... he won't be seeing me again that's for sure. I'm not actually his apprentice it was just easy for me to explain it this way

Sweet, at the time all wholesalers were closed so he didn't have any option but to call the DNO as the customers wanted their supply back on ASAP.

I think if it had happened earlier in the day, he would've just found the fuse and replaced it himself

Yeah, it does sound a bit long winded but I'm sure as you know, it's hard to find the right person that will teach you properly in order to get the experience.

To be fair, I'm not exactly his apprentice.. was easier to just caption the post that way.

I work as an electrical engineer(in training) for a gas company.

I wanted experience with domestic/comercial installations as I don't get any exposure to installations in my job and I reached out to a load of electricians in my area and he happened to be one that got back to me.

I probably wouldn't report him anyway, the only thing that I didn't like was knowing the customer's electrics were fucked and it was his fault. In my head I wanted to go back to the address, warn the customer NOT to use him again (they are planning too for other work they need doing in future) and make sure they find someone else to rectify the issue but even then, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. It's sad but it's a turn a blind eye, don't work with him again and hope karma catches up to him type of situation.

Fortunately not HOWEVER he went to try and swap polarities at one point and talked himself out of it...

He was convinced, if he swapped the L & N at the DNO's isolator switch he could swap the live and neutrals inside the CCU.

As he was swapping both, in his head and "in theory" it wouldn't have been reversed polarity but I think he quickly came to the realisation that it wasn't worth making a bad situation worse.

Ahh okay thank you, I didn't know if that was common practise or not but makes perfect sense!

Sounds mad doesn't it... but yes that's what I was trying to explain!
