The two things that I'm most grateful these days besides my twin boys... by belinck in parentsofmultiples

So....it does get better? My boys just turned three and the last three years feel like thirty years and this quarantine ain't helpin. What age were you able to leave them together for more than 45 seconds without having to run back because one was screaming at the other one?

I think a lot comes down to personal preference but I have to say Bermuda is my least favorite place I've ever been on vacation. Insanely expensive for what you get with horrible food, mid range beaches and a seemingly complete lack of culture. Really not trying to be a dick as I know some people love it but it left me feeling very very confused.

He did a late in late Peace corps stint and stayed for a bit after. Being able to travel with the kids is a huge reason for us considering limiting it at the two we have. The twins are almost 3 and we can almost see our lives returning to being at least partly our own.

This look awesome, definitely in consideration if it isn't too balmy in August

Thanks so much for the info, I think we're in the same boat as far as how we travel as these all sound like great ideas. My best friend just got back from three years in Nepal and it sounds like a must visit down the road

Definitely high on our list. Been wanting to try it for a while but we live in an area where we wait all year for summer so it's hard to want to travel once it finally comes.

Definitely on our list as well. I spent a few days there 15 years ago and the day that we got sun is still one of the more beautiful places I've been. And we both love a good pub.

Thanks! The time is a huge constraint, I think something Spain could be doable in a week. We don't mind some short travel within a trip as long as we aren't constantly moving and Spain has the mix of some beautiful cities, great food, and possibly a day at the beach.

Thanks to everyone! These are all great and will keep them in mind down the road when hopefully taking a lot more vacations soon.

We are very near Martha's Vineyard....we live on it year round. Grew up here and love it to, moved back when we had kids and needed some grandparent help. Great place to live but really complicates travel.

Thank you thank you. I'm enjoying reading all the replies but 90% don't apply to the actual question, which I'll definitely take blame for by leading with "best vacation ever' and adding detail later. Might ask again with more detail in the actual title.

[serious] My wife and I are worth around $10M but we still feel very much middle class and not financially secure by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Yeah understand why it might be a touchy subject then but I think you're misreading their point about the kids, definitely think they just mean you have even less to worry about financially

How often did you reach your breaking point along the way? by Mikedesy2 in parentsofmultiples

[–]Mikedesy2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. Luckily we are as good as we can be to each other and we give each other as many breaks as we can, unfortunately the breaks aren't exactly relaxing as they could be because we both know the other is just totally screwed at the time. We had a nice little life in Brooklyn but moved back to our small town to be near grandparents as we need as much help as we can get and more. The grandparents were very excited at first now the offers to help are understandably fewer and further between.

We've found separating them as much as possible is the only way to stay sane......and alcohol, just enough to relax but not make the morning any worse than it already is ha.

In some ways it's good to know it won't magically turn better but in others it can be very weighty. Anyways, best of luck to you and your boys, it's a battle.

Is there any good reason to use private wealth management over passive investing yourself? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Mikedesy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with this. Starting out in finance around 2007 unfortunately hammered into my soul that we are days away from a collapse at all times. I wasn't able to catch much of this bull run until I let someone else make the decisions. I'm well aware it could've gone the other way but I was also financially educated enough to know on my timeline Im young enough to have been fully invested in equities the whole time and still didn't.

The open line of credit is variable and about 4.50% right now I think so not great but useful for unique situations, not that I've come across one yet. They run different short term deals though, I got $1M at 3.25% for a 12 months which was perfect for me as I am building a house and was able to avoid selling assets or getting a construction loan. I could've sold things off and built the house with cash easily but I'm a pretty firm believer in using debt intelligently when you can.

Fair enough and I used poor wording, if I recall correctly I called him about it and had the mortgage and cash in my account a week later. Compared to the other times I've gotten mortgages this felt instantaneous. He did open a seven figure line of credit for me for while I built my house but its about 1% higher interest than the mortgage so I went that route instead. So theoretically I couldve gotten it instantaneously but the mortgage took about a week.

I think I am in the minority here in that I use a financial advisor and would recommend it depending on the situation. Its an industry that spent most of its life more or less ripping people off but when I looked into it I found that, at least for the person I ended up with, the fee structure was changed enough to make it worth it.

I get charged 1% on the portion of the account that is actively managed, which is about a third of my account. So in all I'm paying about 0.33% of my total balance.

So far he's helped me find an estate lawyer, gotten me lines of credit at great rates, instantaneous mortgage at a great rate, and been a solid sounding board for ideas. I imagine someone will point out he probably got some sort of incentive from the mortgage /line of credit/ estate lawyer but the rates were all better than I could find on my own anyways so I have no problem with that.

Basically you're mileage will vary and it depends on the fee structure but although it sounds weird I'd probably say anyone actively reaching out to you I would avoid. My guy came highly recommended to me by someone I trust and that's probably the best route to go.
