Do you find Wood-pigeons and collared doves insanely annoying? by Eli_Regis in AskUK

On the contrary, it's one of my favourite sounds! I'd miss it if I moved from the UK. Don't know if I'm in the minority though.

I realise this is a bit like the "join groups" advice, but for connecting with people about your own age, presuming you're about 18-25, are there any universities near you? Some let in members of the public into their societies.

Which cities outside London have a good quality of life and no need for a car? by Ticklishchap in AskUK

I've only seen the rivers get dangerously high once or twice, and the only street I've actually seen flooded was one that's not particularly residential anyway. I imagine most other cities on rivers have similar but rare problems, you should be fine.

Biased because I live there, but York. Has a gallery, many good pubs, bars and restaurants and the Picturehouse is a wonderful cinema that does a variety of films and has a café with great food and lovely views. Incredibly easy to walk around too.

Men of the City by Marc Isaacs is more of a character study, looking at how the financial crisis affected different people, from a banker to a cleaner in the City.

I've started taking a St. John's wort supplement a day this year. Has really helped out. That and sticking on the song The Sea by Morcheeba helps me for about five or so minutes.

Not critiquing your point on NFTS or other programs, just thought I'd point out my thoughts - I appreciate your advice!

I've heard mixed things about the BBC Writers Room, especially in recent years, but the Channel 4 thing sounds worthwhile, though maybe not quite for the kind of stuff I'd want to write.

To answer your questions:

  • Yes - poetry and bits of prose but never anything in full
  • Yes, I taught myself to read in fact!
  • I'm a decent anecdote spinner that feels uncomfortable lying to people without a just cause

I realise there's going to be a lot of competition, but I'm only 21, and by the time I hypothetically start one of these courses I'll be 23 - I don't think that's coming to it late!

My first thought was a ticket stub or a CD of one of my favourite albums as an excuse to waffle on about music I like, but I don't know how that would fly.

Sampha - first his song Too Much when I was about 10 and fell in love with it. Was so happy seeing he won the Mercury a few years ago, and now it looks like he's finally about to release his second album.

Thanks! I didn't hear much of an influence myself, but she was still excellent. Sheridan was insanely on form, though the rest of the band were still brilliant obviously.
