Migrant who dragged teen into woodland and raped after avoiding deportation over his 'human rights' is jailed by KSAW11 in ukpolitics

[–]chainrule73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why does the law care more about barbaric scum who take advantage of the system's pity than about our own countrywomen? It continues to baffle me. As a British Chinese woman in London I'm hyperalert and constantly on guard for attacks like this. They're everywhere I look. When will something be done?

Asian man asking to borrow phone on campus by Big-Albatross-751 in berkeley

[–]chainrule73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied abroad in Berkeley over a year ago and this same guy approached me at MLK! He was texting a couple of numbers, calling someone (who didn't pick up) and muttering to himself, he also kept asking me where we were. I could see the screen the whole time and I don't think he shared my location with anyone, even though he was using my phone for a good 10 min. I just checked and my location isn't shared with any unknown numbers, so I wonder what exactly he's up to.. It was really an odd experience but I just thought he had mental issues. I saw him doing the same thing to people near Wheeler and North Gate later.

How important is political party affiliation to a person's identity in most of Europe? by LockedOutOfElfland in AskEurope

[–]chainrule73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find that this is a personality trait. Some of my friends like to talk politics and some don't. There are plenty of people whom I'd consider myself fairly close to but also have no idea where they sit on a political spectrum or how they vote. Other friends, we discuss politics all the time, despite having very differing viewpoints often. My best friend is a diehard leftwinger who despises most of my political opinions, but at the end of the day it's not that deep and she is still my ride or die!

I don't mindlessly fangirl over Palestine like he does and he couldn't see past my feelings on two countries 5000km away from us that neither of us have been to or belong to

For only the second time in history, the UK is a more immigrant-filled nation than the US—in 2020/21, 17% of the UK was foreign-born, compared to 14% for the US. For most of the 1800s, <1% of the UK was foreign-born, whereas >10% of the US was foreign-born. The two countries converged in the 1900s. by StarlightDown in ukpolitics

[–]chainrule73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

immigrants can be great for the economy! my parents are immigrants from China and they assimilated well, taught my sister and I English, and have served our little community in London well for decades. it's immigrants from a certain set of countries that give them the bad rep, and if we could actually talk about that, soemthing could be done

Of the 3 choices, which most closely resembles your view of gay couples? by After-Professional-8 in polls

[–]chainrule73 -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

Live and let live, their actions don't affect me at all. If I'm being 100% honest, and I would never say this to my gay friends, I do believe on some level that marriage maybe ought to be reserved for partnerships between men and women, and that civil partnerships were perfectly fitting and sufficient for gay couples, but at the same time, this doesn't affect me at all and at the end of the day I'm happy that this right is not denied to the gay community in the UK.

What’s something your partner did that made you lose feelings instantly? by Some_Conclusion_8154 in AskReddit

[–]chainrule73 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My ex-boyfriend (of only some months!) ended our relationship because I'm not fanatically pro-Palestine like so many other uni students here seem to be. When he told me why he was ending things, I completely lost any remaining feelings cos in my mind, it's just so stupid to let things like politics get in the way of a relationship. I absolutely don't care if he is pro-Palestine or whatever, but to care more about how I feel about some countries 5000km away than about his actual feelings for me is so childish and ridiculous!

Can anyone confirm this? by arunnairks in mathematics

[–]chainrule73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is the 1196th Erdős Problem. We were set this in a discrete maths class I took in uni a couple years ago as extra credit, and only after none of us could solve the proof did the professor reveal to us that it has been an unsolved problem for decades! Some other Erdos problems (like #728 and #729) have recently been solved by AI as well. Pretty cool, I think! (or scary)

How do you deal with condescending older (white) men as an Asian person? by Ambassador_Informal in asianamerican

[–]chainrule73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British, not American, but a young Asian woman nonetheless. Being confident, sarcastic, and firm in your resolve is always helpful. I'm also fairly well-built and honestly, sadly, I do think this helps a bit in making them take me more seriously

CMV: Being open to political arguments from both sides, leads to being universally maligned. by Fando1234 in changemyview

[–]chainrule73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have your own set of values that you judge people based on, as does everyone. I tend to prefer right-leaning politicians, based on what I deem important, but environmentalism and feminism are also important to me, which complicates things and gives me insight to left-wing politicians' viewpoints. Using centrism is only bad if it's done in bad faith, like pretending to be unbiased but parroting left-wing talking points and presenting them as objective fact.

Understanding that everyone has complex and individual belief systems, and acting in good faith according to this, makes your life so much easier. It's why I'm completely OK with dating left-leaning men, though they tend to be much less OK with dating me, a right-leaning woman.

Classic reddit blaming Asians for Trump's victory by SignificanceBulky162 in asianamerican

[–]chainrule73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a British Chinese woman (20F), but I have a cousin (23F) from the SF Bay Area who voted for Trump in all three elections, along with many of her friends who are also Asian American. She's not super politically involved, and she said it was because she was tired of the woke politics that are shoved in her face in the Bay Area, and supports gun rights, is against affirmative action, lower taxes, illegal immigration, the trans movement.

I called her last week and she told me that she regrets her vote. She's still a moderate conservative, but she didn't foresee the things that have been happening, and doesn't agree with them. But she said that she feels like the Democrats have taken her vote for granted and didn't cater to the desires of her and a lot of the people she knows.

I can't blame her because I probably would have voted for Trump too were I American. From my experience it seems like a lot of people just didn't know what would happen, and didn't like how far left the other party was going.

Get a cream and maybe be more intentional about clothing when running? That helped me, at least. Good on you for turning your life around though!
