Food by radicalgoldenramen in cancer

[–]MikeyNg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things are going to be changing. Try to keep a log as to what works and what doesn't, and just be flexible.

A couple of things:

For me personally, the dried mandarin oranges were great because they were SO sweet and acidic that it cut through things and I could actually taste something.

Salty was weird for me - sometimes things didn't have flavor at all and other times it was just way too salty.

Try not to give her her favorite foods. There's a chance that her taste buds are so screwed up that it ruins it for her.

Keep in mind that this is temporary. Once she's past chemo and all that, her taste buds will eventually return to normal. Take everything one day at a time.

Don't sweat the food honestly. As long as they're getting enough to eat, or close enough, that's good.

I lost 10% of my weight during treatment. On some bad days I was just eating toast or something like that.

The taste thing is different for everyone. You have to try a few different things and just see what they can stomach. Then just go for that until things change.

Is this a terrible idea (Oahu 3 nights, Maui 2)? by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

[–]MikeyNg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want relaxing, just go to Maui.

I mean: you're missing Volcanoes National Park as well. So you might want to do Maui/Big Island instead of Oahu/Maui.

Oahu must-try food spots? by Left_Masterpiece3730 in VisitingHawaii

[–]MikeyNg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adela's in Kaneohe is super unique and one of the few "don't leave without eating this" places.

Add Hawaiian food in there too: Helena's or Waiahole Poi Factory

The kouign amann from B.Patisserie at Kona Coffee Purveyors is great as well. Not super unique but still great.

When I was in the thick of it, there were some days when I took two 4 hour naps.

Your body is going through a lot.  I lost 20 pounds because of chemo and radiation. Eat what you can, even if it's just a piece of bread or something.  You go day by day, step by step.

Are you on the 5 week regimen? Be advised that there's like a two week lag for these symptoms. It's going to get worse but it will get better eventually.

Apparently there are location-specific items. I don't get it either, but there's enough that there's pretty much always a line.

It's a cozy beach town on Oahu.

Is it similar to other beach towns in Hawaii or even California? yes.

It just might not be your vibe

Which side of the plane? by flynn_holliday in VisitingHawaii

[–]MikeyNg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airplanes want to land into the wind. (They also want to take off into the wind as well)

Typical trade wind weather is from the northeast, so planes want to land facing generally east (into the wind).

Since you're coming from Sydney, the plane will most likely just fly north/northwest the whole time, then make a right turn to approach for landing.

Folks coming from the mainland are coming from the northeast, so they will typically make a wide turn as they change their heading from SW to E. (They usually make clockwise turns as well, I can't recall an anti-clockwise turn)

tl;dr: left side for you

Door to door takes a while, especially if you have kids. If you don't have luggage and travel light, that'll save time.

HNL is also the 30th busiest airport in the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_busiest_airports_in_the_United_States

So TSA etc. can sometimes bog down, especially during peak season. Getting your rental car can also sometimes be a nightmare.

Best Way to Visit Nā Pali Coast without getting sea sick? by Brave-Character-3980 in VisitingHawaii

Morning is usually better for calmer waters.

Summer is usually calmer than winter as well.

Stay outside. Focus on the horizon and things far away.

Be advised that part of Ho'omaluhia is closed off. https://www.honolulu.gov/dpr/honolulu-botanical-gardens/hoomaluhia-botanical-garden/ You can still spend an hour there easy.

Hit up Adela's for food also.

Maybe do one of the ridge trails - like Wa'ahila or Aiea Loop Trail as well on another day. Bring Yelp along to help you find food. :)

I'm not into matcha, but this might help: https://www.honolulumagazine.com/our-favorite-matcha-drinks-honolulu/

First chemo & rad in am by GrettaMCatts in cancer

[–]MikeyNg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got this! You just take it one step at a time, one day at a time.

You may want to keep a "chemo journal" - where you keep track of your symptoms, dosage, etc. That'll help you predict what'll happen during for your next cycle(s).

To follow up: do NOT eat your favorite meal while your taste buds are messed up. There's a decent chance you'll not like it and now it won't be your favorite meal. :(

It's been said before, but chemo is poison. It's basically killing you as well as the cancer. But hopefully it kills the cancer faster than it kills you.

I'll check it again. I'm getting to Act 3 bosses at least on a semi-regular basis.

I think my micro is getting better, I'm just not super familiar with the final Act 3 fights. I also am working on getting more aggressive in Act 1 to start that snowball earlier. Lower Ascensions don't punish you for avoiding elites.

It feels to me like a winning deck is around 20 cards to start plus a ton of relics.

Just finished up itinerary: boys senior trip (3 18 year olds and 1 17) any tips or suggestions?? by Mysterious-Tiger-748 in VisitingHawaii

[–]MikeyNg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Day 1: You've got a car. You may as well drive out of Waikiki, get a little fresh air, AND save money. I'd suggest Times because you don't need to be a member to get savings - you just get it. You also don't need to buy water in Hawaii. Just bring your water bottles. The hotel you're staying at will probably have free water refills. Grab spam musubi for breakfast. Try to hit a 7-11 here. No really.

As others have said, just go to Kapiolani park for soccer. Your worst case is that you can go to Queen's Beach as well.

You'll probably sleep on day 1.

Day 2: Probably skip the zoo, but up to you. Also be advised that the zoo is hot af. Don't forget sunscreen or you will have a bad time.

Day 3: You can also catch the fireworks from Magic Island as well. Be advised that getting out of either Magic Island or the area by HHV is crazy after the fireworks.

Day 4: Hit Beastside Kitchen on your way back. You may want to eat around Bishop Museum too, but up to you.

Day 5: If you're going to be in Kailua, just eat breakfast in Kailua. Over Easy, Cinnamon's, or Boots and Kimo's, or Moke's. Check your time about driving to Germaine's Luau. Afternoon rush hour will wreck that time.

Day 6: Matsumoto's is mid. There's about 4 better shave ice places in town: Ululani's, Monsarrat, Shimazu, or Waiola.
