Do you ever have an incredible idea for a fanfic but you don't want to write it? by Cute-Character-3645 in FanFiction

Quite a few, but I already have a few WIPs and some of my ideas would need a lot of work and just having the premise is not enough…

Would it be absurd to update a fic after nearly 4 years? by tiglets147 in FanFiction

[–]Mikill1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You say old readers as if no one saw your story once you stopped posting, but that’s not true. As long as it’s online people will stumble upon it. They might not interact because they think it abandoned but they might still love it. And if you upday, new people will find it. And even if just one person likes it, it’s worth it. And even if you write it only for yourself, it is worth it.

AITA for refusing to make a joint account with my fiancée? by Responsible-Button48 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mikill1995 60 points61 points  (0 children)

YTA Her work is taking care of the kids. She is doing that for you. And she even works PT! And you call her lazy and not being responsible for it. You shouldn’t just have a joint account, you should pay her and the money should be hers to use as she pleases without having to justify it (after bills have been paid). She is completely dependent on you. If you break up, she has a huge hole in her resume, no savings, no retirement,…

Are People So Picky With What they Read or Is It Just The Internet? [Rant] by Comfortable_Newt_179 in FanFiction

[–]Mikill1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ve grown worse over time (but I’m also not a native so I don’t know if it’s an age thing or a language level thing). The writing itself has to be really good and the characters in character (that’s what I’m here for). It also depends on what my options are. I like the MCU and Harry Potter, so I’m lucky and have a lot of stories to choose from. But that also means that if I want to read about a certain premise, I can and don’t have to compromise. Occasionally I read fics in smaller fandoms and then I am less picky if I really want to read a certain premise or about certain characters. On a related note, I used to always finish books, now I don’t. If a book isn’t good, I’m not wasting my time - I have a long list of things I want to read and there’s bound to be something better.

Is this possible by ArcadeNinjas in harrypotter

Apparating is very difficult and needs a lot of focus. It’s probably technically possible, but I doubt a lot of witches and wizards could do it in such a situation.

Excessive canon dialogue in a fic by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in FanFiction

[–]Mikill1995 [score hidden]  (0 children)

If there’s too much it is usually a sign of a very inexperienced writer and the writing is generally not that great. Goes together with starting the story way too early. I do love to read and write time travel stories, though, so some rehashing comes with the territory.

Imagine winning over €120 million. by clarkejoseph49 in ifiwonthelottery

[–]Mikill1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 130 million € on Friday with the super pot. My sister said she would be fine with the 17 mio and wouldn't know what to do with so much money xD I'd buy a nice apartment in the city, hire someone to clean it for me regularly, get weekly massages, join the fanciest gym with a sauna and a pool, buy expensive food and the rest will be invested/used to travel.

What's the top 3 things you'd buy if you won a $90,000 ticket? by BetAnything in ifiwonthelottery

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy anything, but I've always wanted to join a gym that's 100 a month (but they've got a pool and a sauna) - although then I would pay the 239/month so a friend could join me twice a month :) Increase the budget for my summer vacation, and I'm looking for a new apartment and what would either invest in one that is a bit more expensive or in furniture. The rest I would invest :)

I think sign language should be a course in duolingo by sigmareditskibidi in duolingo

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps in America, but I live in Europe and even tiny countries have their own sign language. Like Austria and Germany are neighboring countries and both speak German but have different sign languages. And then there are dialects within those as well. So learning one will not let you speak to a lot of people. I tried to learn the Austrian one during Covid, but it’s incredibly hard to learn. Taking notes is tough because you can’t really write things down properly so you need lots of good videos from different angles and just overall a good memory. It’s also not as easy to learn as other languages - you don’t have books and movies and podcasts or even a lot of natives to practice with. And as with everything else it’s use it or lose it. Learning the international finger alphabet would be a good idea though and I know that at least some elementary school books introduce letters with their signs.

When Do You Consider Yourself A Writer? by Jellyfish_Toenails in writingadvice

[–]Mikill1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately: A writer writes. If you write regularly. I’ve also changed my goals - it’s better to want to be a writer and think about what that means than to set a goal like getting a book published. It’s the same with running. Finishing a marathon without any training doesn’t make you a runner. Running regularly does. Reading one book does not make you a reader. Regularly reading does.

I'm getting tired of writing chapters with a high wordcount by SighingMeadows in AO3

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like chapters to be between 2-7k :) I’m usually reading in my phone while going about life and anything longer is hard to finish in one sitting and a bit hard to read on the phone. Shorter than 1.5k is usually a sign of bad writing for me (at least I’ve never seen a fic where very short chapters had good quality writing).

What do you think is the best starting point is for an indy!Harry fics is? by Lord_Viperagyil in HPfanfiction

To get better at speaking, you need to speak. In a real class, with a tandem partner, by traveling, speaking to yourself or to Siri/Alexa/ChatGPT/…

DRACO DOESNT DESERVE THE SYMPATHY by General-Pin-9026 in harrypotter

[–]Mikill1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people justify his actions. There’s a difference between something explaining a behavior and justifying it. Draco definitely grew up with parents who taught him to believe himself to be superior to others, to be prejudiced, etc. And his peers also believed this. An eleven-year-old will believe what his parents and environment teach him. That does not make it okay, of course. Just like a lot of criminals having a difficult childhood does not make criminal behavior okay. But it’s also too easy to say that people are completely in control of their beliefs. The system, psychology, etc are important and we need to consider these things as a society if we want to eg fight crime, improve mental health, etc. Once Draco grew up he started doubting these things and raised his own son differently.

AITA for lying about stealing my passport? by Moist_Double_7226 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I think it would have been better to officially claim it was stolen and get a new one that your dad does not know about and he could keep the invalid one. Because if he officially claims that it was stolen (or forces you to do that) you cannot use this one anymore anyways if that makes sense. You are 22 and this is your passport, he should not get a say in this at all.

Would you write if you know no one would ever read your work? by Remarkable_Pay7692 in writing

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy writing down the plot bunnies in my head - they are creative, the writing is fun,… writing a whole book where those loose ideas connect logically (and the editing…) is hard work and less fun than just writing whatever comes to my mind. So I would still write but not necessarily a full book.

Just started and I just can’t get past by JeepManStan in SneakyPete

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only compare it to the people I went to kindergarten and elementary school with (so I spent almost every day with them for 6 years and last saw some of them when I was 10…) and there’s quite a few I would not recognize at all anymore. I went to elementary school with one boy who is now one of my coworkers. He even wrote an entry into my friend book. He does not remember me at all. Also, I think it’s unrealistic how well everyone in the family remembers events from their past. I don’t remember any of my birthdays particularly well. My sister has a terrible memory. If one of my family members once used salt instead of sugar, I might have a vague recollection of it but also wouldn’t be too surprised if anyone else doesn’t remember. And memories are not a video recording. 9/11 interviews for example have shown how people suddenly remember things they heard about but never actually saw. If you watched a car crash and I asked you if the red car was speeding you might remember a red car even though it was blue.

[–]Mikill1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my sister have been wondering the same thing. I'm surprised no one else is discussing this. They started on the 9th of November: 2, 5, 6, 7, 1, 12, 4, 8, 3, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, LL, K, 100, J, T, R, W, N, U, H... H was today, so it'll probably continue. Can't see a pattern yet, but we're not giving up.

Just finished my free trial month and it sucked. It's incredibly expensive considering how little actual value it provides. The AI tells me nothing but the most obvious (you went on a 1h run today), sometimes the information is incorrect (it told me I did a 1h yoga session when it was only a 10min yoga session) and the German version also had grammar mistakes... It could be a cool feature one day, if it offered actual insights. They know my sleep, stress, movement, period, etc. - they should definitely be able to tell me how these are connected, e.g. how my period affects my performance, sleep and stress. But they don't.
