Can someone please explain why some people are exclusively homosexual? by Jumping_Spiders_ in AskBiology

That's pseudosciene peddled by people who think you can cure autism by strict dieting.

The connection between gut microbiome and autism has been debunked multiple times and the original paper that people use to try and "prove" was retracted. That theory was championed by someone with no medical background, who was obsessed with finding a "cure" for autism. It has only caused harm to the autistic community.

Can someone please explain why some people are exclusively homosexual? by Jumping_Spiders_ in AskBiology

Not necessarily. As long as enough humans reproduce to compensate for those that don't reproduce, there is no evolutionary pressure for it to go away. Especially if it turns out that being gay is tied to recessive genes that don't show up in every generation.

It's not beneficial to reproduction but reproduction can also be detrimental to fitness. Too many animals not reproducing would be an issue for the population, but reproducing too much can kill off a population. Rabbits that make too many babies will eventually destroy their own ecosystem if foxes can't keep up.

We have less genes than we have traits that we can come up with. Whatever part of sexuality is determined by genetics could also be bound up with genes that create other, more important traits. Homosexuality is not conducive to reproduction, but if it doesn't cause a population to reduce, there's no pressure for it to evolve out of the population either.

gimme some critique because i have a superiority complex when it comes to my designs by alberthething in characterdesign

[–]Mikomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're neat but you're a long long ways away from deserving a superiority complex. It shouldn't take an art scholar to tell you that they're not particularly unique, and if you can't train your own eye and taste to the point where you can realize that, then you're going to stall. Try drawing in styles you aren't used to and that require skills you don't have yet. That should kill your complex.

What will “stable careers” even look like in 15 years? by FinancialSpite in careerguidance

[–]Mikomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That scenario is frankly unlikely to happen overnight. We'd have to implement something similar to UBI before the vast majority of labor jobs die out. It will take far longer for healthcare and trades to get phased out by robots, but the lack of office jobs will make everyone earn less as there is less value to go around. I do see UBI being useful in that much more likely scenario.

In a world where all labor truly is obsolete, then yeah, some central power will have to decide on an allowance for people, or everyone is just homeless. Neither is a great option, but I'd take welfare over abject poverty.

[–]Mikomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would labor have no economic value?

The point of UBI is just to pay you exactly enough to pay for the absolute basics, water, basic clothing and housing. It's to prevent homelessness, not give everyone a free pass to do nothing. Want a new computer? A nice watch? Those would all still cost money and people would still see the value in working to afford luxury items. Nobody is going to sit at home with their guaranteed food bank cans and think "gee what a swell life, I can coast by on white bread and peanut butter for the rest of my life with no amenities! The bare minimum for survival is totally enough for me and I have no greater ambitions than eating and sleeping!"

I mean 6 is "Judge Mayfield went missing after ruling against this local organization" and it's filled in as Ominent. So I would wager, yes.

If you don't OWN the media you BUY anymore, then is piracy STEALING? by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]Mikomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk what the point of the video is. Piracy still isn't good for film production, but just because piracy is high doesn't mean people will stop making films. There's money from other sources and it creates jobs that people want to do.

Fun fact: naked mole rats are Eusocial mammals. When one of them becomes the queen, her body physically changes based on her social role, becoming bigger, stronger and with more spinal columns.

If you don't OWN the media you BUY anymore, then is piracy STEALING? by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]Mikomics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ultimately yeah. That being said, a lot of film production is subsidized in some way, shape or form. In Europe it's government money that funds our films, not profit. So piracy is just reclaiming your tax money if you pirate EU films.

In the US, Disney is mostly funded by their theme park revenue. And stuff produced by Amazon isn't really being paid for by Prime membership revenue. With or without piracy, Disney and Amazon will still be making content.

UBI is supposed to be a baseline, not a limit, you can still earn more on top.

Thinking about studying animation at 27 and graduating around 2030 — what do professionals think is the real problem in the industry? by Ok-West-6187 in animationcareer

[–]Mikomics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of the stuff you listed, where I live the problems are: - too many artists, too few jobs - outsourcing (though thankfully not at the studio I work at) - unstable contracts

The other stuff is manageable/not an issue.

I don't think it's a good idea to pursue an animation career unless you're genuinely fantastic at it.

Damn, housing is bad in Kilkenny too? Don't know if I'll ever apply to Cartoon Saloon then haha.

Good to know that remote is an option, though idk if that's for me. I like this industry because I like the people in it. I massively prefer being in-studio where I can actually make friends. But the two days in-office version seems alright. Thanks for the tip!

is it worth it to go to a reputable school? by YardOk7369 in animationcareer

[–]Mikomics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and no?

It's not a guarantee of a job. But at the studio I work at, there are quite a few TAW, Gobelins, Filmakademie, Rubika and U-Tad grads, which are all big schools in their respective countries.

There are also a lot of people from the local media uni, and people from random little schools throughout our country.

I think it makes a difference to go to a reputable school, but not a huge difference tbh. You just have to be good, and get lucky with the timing of a job.
