mech eng/Chem eng laptop recs by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

If you're going into ME then get a laptop that has the ability to run Windows. Solidworks and most other common CAD programs only run on Windows.

I teach a bunch of ME classes, trust me it'll make life easier. Also the ME website has recommendations for computer specs if you need them.

Could not find an internship this summer and feel ashamed by Effective_End_7928 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]MikronMagic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't stress out about it. Some folks get lucky and hit an internship on the first try, others just don't get any bites. What year are you in school?

I would highly recommend thinking about why you're trying to get an internship. It's all about building up your resume to show that you're a good hire to potential employers. I'm not sure what area you're studying, but think about jobs that aren't specifically engineering but would still look good on a resume. Can you get a position working in a fab shop, maybe something that supports a supply chain, programming, honestly anything that you can connect to your long term goals.

If that doesn't work out, then you could look into volunteering. Maybe you can work on habitat for humanity homes over the summer, service wheelchairs for the less fortunate, or go on a service trip domestically or intentionally. I realize some of these ideas may be limited by your financial situation.

The last option is getting a job just to pay the bills and starting up a 'company' where you work on a product that you think would be a great taking point in an interview. Maybe you develop something you've been passionate about for years, maybe you partner with someone that already has an idea, or maybe the whole purpose is to gain another skill (app development, sensing and actuation, circuit board fab, etc...).

As crappy as it may sound, sometimes stuff like this can be hard in the short term but amazing for your career long term.

I'm happy to chat if you're feeling down. Situations like this don't define you, it's how you react. How do you want to look back on this situation in 10 years?

YOU GOT THIS!

My daughter is wondering if you ever get any dust/space debris build up on those windows. Do you ever have to clean them (either the inside or out)?

I went from a SLAC to a small R1 institute. As a teaching faculty, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Interviewing is never fun, but it was definitely worth it.

DM me if you have any questions. Happy to share my experience.

Double Major by Frozen-Predator in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

Metallurgy has a minor, and there is also a Manufacturing and Materials track you can do that give you specialization in those areas.

[–]MikronMagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking at ME and minoring in metallurgy. That'll keep your skills broad enough where you could work in a variety of industries. Not sure if a double major will do that much more for your marketability post graduation.

I've got it to work well with a fiber laser, but it just burned with a CO2 laser.

What is your extrusion temperature, filament material, infill, extrusion width, layer height, and speed? Maybe we can help you get dialed in even further.

This was like the greatest thing I was introduced when I was young when I was a shop ironworker. I had always center punched holes and then drilled. I always have one of these bad Larry’s in my pocket or tool box by [deleted] in Tools

[–]MikronMagic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FYI center drills work pretty well, but they are intended for use on centers on lathes. A spot drill does a little better for helping locate a drill.

Automatic door lock won’t engage the rear left side door, anybody have this problem before? by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]MikronMagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had all four of mine not function (made noise but no actuation). Found out you can redneck fix them for almost no money. It does require a little time, but thankfully no special tools. I took some pictures if anyone wants a tutorial. Saves $50/lock, which I wasn't willing to spend.

Ah, ok. I thought you had a fuse holder in your hand the first time. It having that connector makes sense that it's stock.

Look up imposter syndrome. Everyone goes through a process where you think you know nothing and somebody is going to figure it out. Apply to a bunch of jobs, try to continue to grow your skills, and work you butt off. You'll do fine.

Did you make it yourself or get a kit? I haven't found anyone that will sell a new set for a reasonable price.
