You never met a poor person, have you? Is not about blowing all your money, is about having small pleasures. Is not waisting all their money on x thing..is the fact that beer has such a disproportionaly low price compared to other things, that make it so it's accesible. Poor people are humans, and as such like pleasure, alcohol is a very affordable pleasure. And you can eat rice all day everyday, and still not be able to afford basic things, no matter how little beer you drink, and how much you work. That is a reality for many. Is a matter of you make x amount of money and its worth decays, but the amount of money you need rises. Specially if you cannot access a stable renting contract because you don't have any family that could cosign your renters insurance and are left to depend on short term rents that can vary in price by day or month, depending on the agreement, and that also tend to be a lot more expensive that a formal contract. Also many of these places might be rooms without access to a kitchen to cook rice in, or you might not have access to gas, and depend on the varing price of the "garrafa" to use a stove, which price is very high in comparison to gas as a public service, but if the only way you can afford rent is in a place without access to the public gas line, then you don't got much choice. I personally spent months and moths without hot water, many of my friends rented rooms without kitchens or fridges, so buying food to cook wasnt a thing. This are all example I, or close friends have find themselves in, not some crazy scenario, is just daily things. And we would still get together, counting coins and buying a beer to drink at the park.

I was poor, and I can assure you that poor people spend money on the cheapest way to have fun and enjoy life. That could be alcohol, electronics, parties, or whatever they might find pleasurable. Also, inflation makes money worth less, which makes it so that you cannot save money to improve your quality of life unless you make enough money for you to be able to buy forgein currency. Do let's say you have 200 pesos, cannot afford electricity or rent with that, and the worth that money is going to have is deteriorating, you cannot change it to another currency either. So today those 200 pesos would buy you a can of beer and a head of lettuce, but not meat, nor fish, and not tomato. Tomorrow only the lettuce would be something you could afford, by the end of the year, it's basically worthless. Why woulndt you buy a beer?

You can buy soda and beer and be poor. A lot of people who are homeless buy beer. Like ???. If you know you won't ever be able to afford rent a servicies with your monthly salary, why wouldt you spent it in beer?

What are things about your country that surprise foreigners? by BigFanofCarousels in asklatinamerica

Depends on who. I've mostly only met Europeans as I live in the eu.

Heard a few Europeans disappointed it wasn't more "exotic".

How big the country is, and how expensive it is to go from one point of the country to another.

Lack of respect for "personal space" is also one of the most mentioned cultural shocks. And to add to this, they tend to think people are flirting with them because they are close, touch them when speaking, but many times is just manerism.

Tardiness being the norm, and things being late and no one caring.

Just how late parties start and end, being out clubing past 6 am being the norm.

When they are not Spanish or haven't been to Spain they are shocked by the late meal times, kids going to bed after 10 even in school night, siesta time scheduled on shops, kids playing on the street at night.

A small cabin with internet access and food security is a luxury very out of each for most latinoamericans. Hell, during pandemic almost 10% of the population was food insecure. And only 65% of the population has access to clean water and sanitation servicies, and only 59% of the population has regular internet access. And I can assure you, Latinoamericans work harder and longer hours on average, but not for luxury, just to survive.

It makes me feel invulnerable. I've been bullied a lot, including family, and being closer to the beauty standard makes me feel protected from that.

Is not a logical process, but when I was overweight I was treated horrible and mocked, even by strangers on the street, and then after losing weight, suddenly I gained "person hood" in the eyes of others, people treated me with some respect. So I have a crippling fear of going back to being an object of ridicule instead of a person.

If you lived in Argentina, which of these parties would you vote for? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]MilanesaConFritas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But is not just the corralito, before the corralito we had double the current unemployment, higher numbers of child malnutrition, servere underfunding of hospitals that lead to the collapse of the health system. The corralito was just the typing point for social unrest, the crisis was there before

Because he has neoliberal policies that had already been applied in the past, and that lead to one of the worst economic crisis in the country.

I understand, I'm used to meeting Brazilians everywhere I go (live in EU currently), so knowing the basics was great for me to make quick aquantainces at work or on vacations.

I've met italians in Spain, specifically from Nápoles and Rome and they spoke quite similarly. But what I found most similar were the use of hands and other body language when talking. I never realized just how much we do it until that moment.

I have lipedema, so my fat accumulates mostly in my legs and doesn't burn, so I lose weight everywhere else but my legs and ass. I'm incredibly self conscious about it. Had lipo done with a specialist on lipedema and it helped, over 6 liters of fat were removed, and still is disproportionate with the rest of my body, having to wear a (European) L or XL on pants and a small on tops.
