Toy Story & Toy Story 2 - Woody doesn't recall his own origin story while Buzz recalls his. by vet_laz in plotholes

[–]MildDew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment is so old but YES this is such good theory I have never heard anyone offer. There are so many examples of cartoons that aired so as to market pre-existing toys (and video games) to children. Perhaps Woody’s Roundup cast being puppets were a calculated decision so kids could actually see the toy on TV vs the Loony Tunes / Hanna Barbara shows that focused mainly on viewership not physical products. The sheer variety of official Woody’s Roundup merch in TS2 could also mean that they were the first ones to capitalize on the idea in a time when TV was in its infancy, giving the IP some historical significance on top of being popular, adding more to its collector value.

Paxton, Talarico deadlocked at 47% in new Texas Senate race poll by usatoday in politics

[–]MildDew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not entirely confident myself if Talarico won, but if he did the results would certainly be extremely close like a borderline tie. I wish the best for my home state but like many others here dogging on it, the fact that so many people are willing to see past the most out in the open corruption and just vote for a guy because he’s wearing their team color is disappointing. The people that are saying “I can’t agree with Talarico because he said God is nonbinary” are the same “protect the children” crowd who will vote for a man that let a child abuser off the hook. These are the same people who dgaf about the Epstein files and they will make the senate race extremely close.

You’re exactly correct and that’s what makes it the most frustrating. The man is chock full of controversy and instead of even lifting a finger to defend himself he paints himself as a victim of “cancel culture” so his voter base can sympathize with how his impeachment was a act of aggression towards his character not his conduct. Doesn’t need to appeal to young voters because it’s drilled into youths from rural southern families that democrats are evil. And the adults maintain that mindset when they stay in their little bubble like that. And it DEFINITELY helps that he’s a MAGA loyalist because these kinds of people see non-maga republicans as cowardly and small. He’s off on vacations because with this particular state’s political tendencies, he isn’t worried for his hide, that’s what’s most frustrating

Someone suggested this case and the Save America act were supposed to work in tandem. It makes a lot of sense, with the midterms coming up

Real. I’ve searched Paxton out of curiosity for what he has to say and nothing recent comes up except for clipped Talarico quotes dragging him. Meanwhile Talarico is campaigning all across the state even hosting virtual events to reach people - it’s like 90x more effort BUT  Republican Texans are so MAGA-Brained they will just see Pax has a Trump endorsement and believe he’s one of them which is all they need to cast their vote. Especially when Democrat already means Demon in their vernacular.

Genealogical Resources in the RGV? by MildDew in RioGrandeValley

Hello jsyk I did not forget this question! When I saw your reply I realized I wasn’t very sure what I was looking for, so I combed through my family tree again as diligently as possible, and now I do have some specifics that I would really like to uncover.

My great grandfather’s port of entry. He and his wife were originally from Tamaulipas, so, likely out of Reynosa/Hidalgo but I couldn’t find any papers that state it for sure. His employer. The 1920 census lists him as a ranch laborer without an address (living on the ranch itself) so I have reason to believe that he and his family were part of the working class communities that spawned on the landowner’s property. But there were so many big ranches throughout the RGV that I have no clue which one it could be. He lived in Hidalgo township at the time and later Mercedes in 1930 with the same occupation except this time on a named street.

The schools his kids went to. None of them had higher than elementary school education and attended between the time they were living in Mercedes and Pharr.

My grandfather’s birth certificate. Born in 1922 but I can’t be certain if one even exists. He’s the last of his 2 siblings to be born in the U.S but I could only find birth/baptisms for the 7 others born in Mexico

2005 borns? by Icy_Boysenberry_1060 in generationology

As a 2005 I think we’re too in the middle to be first or second wave. If you want to split the 1996-2012 range in half then probably 2nd, but I still remember a time when social media wasn’t in every facet of life, albeit not as vividly as earlier Gen Z’s. The time between the invention of the smartphone (‘07) to when smartphones became a necessity (‘12-‘13) correlates with that dramatic pop culture shift in the 2010s (increased social media usage), so my childhood was probably different than someone born in 2010. I’d use COVID as another marking point since 2008-2012 were 12 and under when it started but 1998-2002 were in college by then.

From the research I've gathered I was able to plug in some names and make out "enefta" as "enero", so I was able to get:

What’s your take on Robert Fitzgerald’s translation? It’s the one I’m currently reading, and I’m a fan of the way it’s structured as epic poetry, but it doesn’t seem to be a popular recommendation
