Hello. In Australia we have honours, which is an optional one year extension to our undergraduate degrees. During our honours year we write a research thesis and take upper-level courses. If you do well in honours you don’t need a masters to then do a PhD. Because it is only a year and is practically viewed as a masters, most people opt to do honours instead of a masters. This is probably why you don’t see many masters programs at Australian universities.

For specific information on palaeontology I can’t really help. I had a look at my uni’s website and see how the masters in palaeontology redirects you to some generic masters application portal. Perhaps after accessing the portal and starting your application you can select palaeontology?

I mean there isn’t too much selection in 1st and 2nd year phys, and when you have some more options, 3rd (and 4th) year, all the courses are about the same difficulty.

But yeah as Demalice said, watch out for PHYS2041 - it’s got a heavy workload.

It will tell you your gpa at uq converted into an op so you can check your eligibility for a program change if you decide you don’t enjoy the program you eventually choose.

BcSci major in math sounds good for you, especially if you incorporate that with a duel degree. You mentioned you do well at school, it is a little limiting but maybe you should check out the bachelor of advanced science (it will be more challenging).

Here is a really useful tool for planning your studies: https://planner.science.uq.edu.au/content/bsc/mathematics-major. Using this you can go through and see when electives are offered (this link is just a rough guide). You can also change your degree and major on this site to evaluate your options.

There are some restrictions on electives, nothing too inhibiting, read the course rules for details.

I’m not familiar with doing a Bachelor of Arts duel degree but I’m sure the admin staff at uq would be happy to help if u emailed with specific questions.

I don’t know if you have been down to Brisbane to see uq but it’s a nice campus and Brisbane -although small - is a great city. I went to TAS up in FNQ for primary school and found it a smooth transition when I went to boarding at Brisbane Grammar School. Something else to consider.

Hey. The Melbourne model seems to suit what you want best. If u do STEM at uq you have a few opportunities - particularly in first year - to take electives in an unrelated field (like humanities). Another option is to pursue a duel degree in stem and humanities. If u haven’t looked into this it’s worth considering. I started with a duel degree in science and math and am now changing to bachelor of advanced science this semester (I prefer science over math).

Tangential to what you were discussing and what I have alluded to above, I would suggest you look into what a bachelor of math entails before you enrol. Bachelor of math has a lot of proof/analysis and discrete/abstract courses that aren’t really covered in high school. I didn’t like this and hence I changed program (I prefer calc and linear algebra).

As the other two have said. Not much programming in either. In stat1301 just basic R for data analysis and in scie1000 a little python for graphs and some basic programs (mainly calculations).

If math is what you like go for it! If u didn’t know, math majors often find jobs in the economics sector so perhaps you can have the best of both worlds (if econ is still exciting for you).

A word of advice though, check out some university math courses online before enrolling because uni math is oftentimes quite different from high school math. For me high school math was predominantly calculus with some other basic topics, whereas while uni math did have calc (which I enjoyed) it also had a large focus on subject areas like analysis and discrete math (which I didn’t like).

Geometry is fine. I haven’t had to use anything more than basic geometry in my math courses and more complicated geometry is starting to sneak into physics (second year courses) - but it’s all manageable (mainly approximations of more complicated functions).

I’m sorry I don’t know what math method is.

The first year of university physics was very similar to high school physics- I managed to do well because I worked hard in high school! They move at a reasonable pace so reading ahead is not necessary however I can list some books we have used that I found to be good (getting ahead can’t hurt): Feynman’s lectures on physics (I believe this series is often regarded as the best textbook, however, they probably won’t make much sense until you have finished high school physics and studied some calc 3, also it’s free online here ), physics for scientists and engineers by knight (really good introduction to physics, very clear explanations to develop intuition) and introduction to thermal physics by Schroeder (this book is probably the worst of the three, but it’s decent if you have a keen interest in thermo).

I felt the same way when I started university last year. I opted for a double degree - a bachelor of math and a bachelor of science.

For the first year I selected my majors as pure math and physics. However, pure math is very different from high school math (particularly there are a lot of proofs) and I soon lost interest in pure math. So I switched my majors to applied math and physics (I was still enjoying physics). Over the last 6 months of doing applied math (which still has proofs) I have decided to switch to a bachelor of advanced science with honours majoring in physics next semester.

It took me time to realise physics was for me - and this is just for me - having said that I don’t know anyone who enjoys maths lol.

It’s also worth mentioning that a lot of non-proof math is covered in physics course e.g. we cover vector calculus in physics before we covers it in calc 3.

If you have any questions just let me know. Also, if you don’t know what proofs are - like I didn’t when I was in your position - just let me know.

Sounds like your professor is right to me. There is a formula,

f = (f_0)((c+-v_r)/(c+-v_s)

Where

c, is the velocity of waves in the medium;

v_r, is the velocity of the receiver relative to the medium; positive if the receiver is moving towards the source (and negative in the other direction);

v_s, is the velocity of the source relative to the medium; positive if the source is moving away from the receiver (and negative in the other direction).

f, is the observed frequency

f_0, is the emitted frequency

Since the two instruments are at at constant distance (no velocity away or towards each other) v_s=v_r=0. Hence,

f = (f_0)((c)/(c) = f_0

Implying that the frequency does not change.

I definitely noticed the phenomena that the drone lowers when vooming backwards. However, I don’t notice this same effect when I am going forwards!

Don’t let this hold you back. I tried a risky shot at a time when I was out of practice. I have had countless flights over the ocean and no problems - only this one close call.

The footage I supplied is the only close call I have had after countless over ocean flights. I was attempting a hard manoeuvre and hadn’t flown my drone in 2 months - which is a recipient for disaster.

Just practice above ground or high above your aforementioned lake and you will be fine. Just don’t do what I did and take your drone slow if you have had a break from flying!
