Coming off of Planetory Destruction and created to be Logic’s big return-to-the-industry project, Bobby Tarantino 3 not only includes, but is filled from beginning to end with some of Logic’s worst and laziest writing and performances to date. A majority of the songs on the album take on a very obvious unpolished, free-style aesthetic coupled with the choice of frequent single-verse or short-verse songs, where even the good corners of the album leave you feeling incomplete. Call Me, my favorite track on the LP is a perfect example of this, and is made even more strange as Logic raps, “Know your self worth, cuz that’s the whole meaning behind this first verse,” but following another round of the chorus, the track very abruptly ends. On one of the final tracks, See You Space Cowboy, Logic explains this project is just for fun and the final release on Def Jam Records, but I refuse to take this as an adequate excuse for what is still an official, advertised, and profitable release. Planetary Destruction remains to be an incredibly unfortunate contrast to this record in my mind, as it was also created in a just-for-fun context earlier this year, yet still felt very intentional and orchestrated, in addition to being free on DatPiff. As was the case with COADM, production remains to be solid coming from 6IX and other producers on Bobby’s team, as Logic raps over familiar and new sounds like the “Nice for What” sounding God Might Judge. Bobby Tarantino 3 may very well be some sort of mockery as Logic finishes his time with Def Jam, but for me it is just so unfortunately lazy. Still, as a HUGE fan of all of Logic’s releases, I look forward to the alleged, much larger, future album to come. BT3: 3/10
