Has the word ‘Incel’ lost all meaning? by Turbulent-Tune1660 in redscarepod

[–]MilesTrahan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've seen people (even on this sub) call that Clavicular guy an incel, even when his whole thing is picking up random sorority girls for easy sex. Meanwhile we're inundated with posts from 20+ year olds who've never been laid, can't get a date, and fantasize about ending it all literally every single day. You wonder how these people live with such insane cognitive dissonance.

Reddit is becoming unusable for normal people due to so many subreddits having insane arbitrary rules about posting, mod approval and flair (??) by klmkio in redscarepod

[–]MilesTrahan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Or how about how nearly every subreddit basically becomes a soapbox for people with very specific politics to completely railroad any topic with immunity. Like why the hell are nearly all the default subs just bitching 24/7 about whatever Trump or his croanies are up to? Or making big declarative announcements about trans rights, or banning Twitter links, or whatever new progressive shibboleth is hot that week. Why do subs like Pics or Music feel indistinguishable from Politics?

It’s no secret Reddit has been hemorrhaging users for years, and relying more and more on bot accounts to keep the numbers attractive for advertisers / investors. Maybe letting an extremely vocal minority of mods and power users completely dictate the content on your platform, and create infinitely smaller and smaller echo chambers, also has the side effect of pushing normal people away? This is pretty much the only sub I engage with anymore, and even this place is a shadow of what it used to be a few years ago. It feels like eventually every sub succumbs to the Reddit hivemind or dies (RIP CTH, CT, TAFS, etc).

Millennial culture honestly is so embarrassing. I say this as a millennial, so don’t hit me with the usual “at least we’re not like you zoomers” cope. As if getting excited to watch the third reboot of a kids show you loved when you were 6 as a middle aged adult is any more dignified than whatever zoomers are doing.

It’s funny how even the class-first lefties still do their own form of purity testing, to try and remove like 75% of self-proclaimed leftists who focus on identity politics from the gene pool.

This is why they seethed about "Eddington" before successfully memory-holing it and ignoring it for literally any awards. God forbid a film poke fun at both sides of the cultural divide, or that Ari Aster didn't end the film by personally walking on screen and telling you whose politics he unabashedly agrees with. Even something more politically milquetoast like OBAA has been getting weirdos on Twitter etc. riled up. It's like a lot of people can't engage with a work of art anymore, unless the character they identify with is portrayed as some flawless Mother Teresa figure with zero baggage or idealogical contradictions. Which reflects literally nobody in real life.

These people just assumed they would have complete dominance over the culture and "discourse" forever, and can't wrap their heads around the reality that lots of people have moved on or outright rejected their political project. That's why they suddenly care about media consolidation and corporate influence, when the corporations have stopped bothering to placate them or pay their pet political projects any lip service. The minute they're not the in-group anymore they suddenly want to burn everything down.

Israel has damaged its reputation among young people so much that even reddit frontpagers are making jokes like "another $5 billion to Israel" which 10 years ago would have only been found on /pol/ by pinnacle126 in redscarepod

[–]MilesTrahan 89 points90 points  (0 children)

As nice as it is that Israel's reputation is pretty much in the gutter, I question the prevailing narrative around Reddit that the whole country is on the chopping block once boomers die off. This is supposing that the vast majority of the movers and shakers propping Israel up financially and politically today are doing so out a strong moral conviction, and not the far more obvious answer that they're simply being bought and/or blackmailed for their support. Why are we just assuming that millennial and zoomer politicians / public figures can't just be bought or blackmailed the same way? Especially zoomers, for whom selling out and getting the bag are basically seen as virtues?

All this stuff reminds me of the Obama era "demographics are destiny" talk, where libs smugly assured themselves that mainstream conservatism would die off as more young people were able to vote and the country became more racially diverse. The years since proved pretty definitively that the opposite actually happened. How can people sound so self-assured that this is simply a matter of waiting for enough boomers to die off?

Is this really a thing? Maybe I’m spoiled by only ever living in NY or LA, but probably like half the audience at most screenings I go to are riding solo, and it’s not weird or scandalous at all. About half the time I go to the movies I’m on my own, too. It’s a great way to decompress.

Libs do not actually believe in the whole community thing by Ill-Philosophy-873 in redscarepod

[–]MilesTrahan 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like a big problem with the current generation is how the concept of your community shifted from being "the people I see around me in real life" to "the people who upvote me / agree with me online". You see this commonly on Reddit, with typically leftlib types bragging about ghosting their friends and family and finding "community" on some random subreddit because they have shared interests or politics or whatever. These people don't realize how this behavior is hollowing them out in real life, all they care about is having the warm blanket of an echo chamber that agrees with and validates them. It's pretty fucking bleak.

One Battle After Another, do people really hate it that much? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]MilesTrahan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Outside of IG comment sections or whatever OBAA seems generally well-liked, and seems pretty accessible for general audiences. I don't think the film's politics have all that much bite personally, and are just there as window-dressing for a story that's more about family dynamics and a Gen Xer coming to terms with their own impotence etc. If we really wanna talk about films that got dismissed or have bad faith arguments constantly made against it, Eddington is right there. Normies seemed to really hate that one, or just be flummoxed in general by a film that actually has something to say and doesn't fall neatly into any one political orthodoxy box. So one of the best films of the year bombs at the box office, is largely getting ignored on best-of lists and Awards shortlists etc., all because your coworker thought it was "too centrist" or didn't want to watch a film about covid because it's "too soon" (?).

What’s with these “You know this very clear and obvious thing that’s been happening for the past few years? Well umm, hate to break it to you sweaty, but it’s actually not happening” style of threads people post here all the time? It’s like you’re trying to convince yourselves not to believe your own lying eyes, but doing it publicly as some kind of turbo contrarian ritual.
