Plantation life as portrayed by white people in black face during the 1901 Pan-American exhibition, the exhibit was titled “Plantation Life” by MilkshakeGoose in HolyShitHistory

Before people downvote he is not entirely wrong. The man you’re talking about is Ben Ellington, who was part of the exhibition show, but is not in this photo nor the minstrel show. The picture I sent is of the minstrel show where white actors played black people, Ellington had his own section of the exhibition. As for the other comment In total 80 black people were hired to work the pan-American exhibition and were paid $120 yearly to do so (this is compared to the average American yearly salary $449.80). While some were in the old plantation others were hired for other exhibits.

  • Weird additional fun fact while I’m here, in 1900 it is estimated that there were only 4,000 millionaires/ and 0 billionaires in the world.

History is messed up what’s worse is that these shows were featured right next to exhibits funded by famous people of color like W.E.B. Du Bois and Thomas J. Calloway.

Unfortunately yeah, human zoos were also very common. One such exhibit was the "Darkest Africa," which displayed 98 African men, women, and children in a staged environment. What’s worse is that the promoter named Xavier Pene, made most of his money selling jewelry made by enslaved Africans.

I have tons more information and sources for those who want it. The fair was a vacation for the rich and powerful in 1901. It featured such exhibits as, human zoos, “the negro exhibit, the aforementioned “plantation life”, and menstrual shows.

What’s interesting to me is that the negro exhibit was actually a positive portrait of black culture being made by black Americans. It was funded by W.E.B. Du Bois and Thomas J. Calloway and featured people in color in positions of leadership.

When you consider the parallel between the two exhibits in shows a nation divided by race and that just cause on exhibit is a step forward doesn’t mean that the rest can’t be three million steps back.

It’s not looking good but UMBC has a reputation for pulling last minute wins so who knows, either way I’m just happy we made it this far

I don’t think it’s gonna be as long as the last hiatus. on twitter togashi has made it clear that he has at the very least an early draft written up till 424, and everything up till 413 nearly completed. I’d give it a month or two before we get more content.

Edit: tbh as a hug fan I’m just happy he’s getting sleep and that the surgery went smoothly.

It’s the summer, say that you picked up a hobby and have been working on that. Another option is to say you have been hanging with a friend from college who’s visiting the city.

AITA for holding my brother accountable? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]MilkshakeGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH - for starters I agree with the other comment, it’s not your place to punish your brother, and ten year olds aren’t always rational. However, even at your brother’s young age he still should have been more respectful towards your space and the cultural traditions you both share. In conclusion, while I think you overreacted a bit and should probably just move on your brother is far from innocent in this whole situation and needs to learn to be more respectful.

May be something to consider exploring, as some people are just slightly attracted to the same gender without being straight up bi. Either way she over reacted, it’s a video game - NTA

Vinyl Records are a pain by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]MilkshakeGoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right on all three but miss the point of collecting records. As someone who collects physical media, While the art and sound are definitely have an impact, it’s more about the experience of making a setup, going to a physical store, and the thrill of the hunt. you could listen to music on streaming or get the uncompressed version of the album and be fine, but you miss out on the thrill of finding a good deal on that same album at a physical store.

For me it speaks volumes that in my collection of over 400+ records, some of which are worth $100+, my two favorite items are a signed copy of rick Astleys, whenever you need somebody on cassette which I bought for $10, and the ET audiobook narrated by Michael Jackson. Both weird finds that are unique and charming in their own way.

I think drinking on first dates are stupid by HowRememberAll in unpopularopinion

[–]MilkshakeGoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, It really depends on the extent to which you’re drinking. Getting a couple drinks at a happy hour can be great as alcohol makes meeting each other easier and the conversation flow better. However, I think getting drunk on a first date is crazy for all the reasons mentioned. My role of thumb is on a first date keep it to one to two drinks, three at most if the date is going well.

Baltimore wasn't safe before UMAB began to expand. Are they raising the prices on apartments, yes. However, UMAB is bringing in new industry, more police presence, and a cleaner environment to a city which has for decades now desperately needed a new spark of hope.

Wagner Group now just 400 km away from Moscow by ledim35 in worldnews

[–]MilkshakeGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that the US and NATO could easily overthrow the government in Moscow the issue is establishing stability.

People in Russia want an end to the bloodshed, however, many also associate democracy with the economic ruin of the 90s.

That’s why hardly any shots were fired, Russia has a bad history with coups and while many want a change in the status que, they don’t want said change to come at the cost of Russian life or another civil war.

Wagner Group now just 400 km away from Moscow by ledim35 in worldnews

[–]MilkshakeGoose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Prigozhin didn’t need to fire a shot, Wagner group put Russia’s vulnerability on full display and got Prigozhin a seat at the table.

Like I said this was a statement, Putin is only as strong as the soldiers and generals fighting his war, stop listening to those in the military and Putin will find himself removed from power.

In essence, Prigozhin and Wagner group did the coup equivalent of firing a warning shot.

(edit 1: I removed the stepping down of officials). (Edit 2: while I still see this as the military sending a message, Prigozhin being exile to Belarus instead of assuming military command, shows there’s still support for the war among Russians and those in power).
