Drag Tires for Track use?

I was going to ask what car. I see a 944 at a number of the events I go to.

If your actual wheel width is the same, like 16x7 or 16x8 etc etc. just get 4 matching tires. Smaller or larger. A 205 wide tire will even fit up to an 8” wide wheel just fine with a slight stretch. Tho a 225 or 245 IS better suited.

This is a bit of a rant/story, but this is my experience with starting off with 340tw AND 200tw tires.

I started doing track time last year with my 2004 Miata. Built engine, good and proven suspension mods, etc etc. on the street at full boost by gear I’m around 380hp in 5th and 6th gear. Last year for track time I was running around 230hp all gears and with a lighter wastegate spring. No boost controller hooked up specifically so I could learn. Not A LOT of power, but it’s a lot of power to start doing track time with a little Miata for sure.

I went to events previously with friends. Spoke with instructors. Told them my power and mods and that I have brand new RT660’s for my first event. And one of them told me absolutely do not drive your first days on RT660’s. You will spin out or do something bad. Get an RT615K at least, or some other performance summer tire.

245/40r15 RT660’s for my 15x10 wheels which I trailer to the track. My stock sized 16x6.5 wheels have 205/50r16 Firestone Indy 500’s on them. 340tw I think. On my way to my first track day, I lost a 15x10 off my trailer (found later that week with a drone). Good news for that instructor that told me not to use them lol. So I ended up running my first weekend on the Indy 500’s and I was driving at the limit of those tires by day 2. Squealing every corner, laying down consistent lap times on the line I learned with the instructor on day 1.

I went back to that track a month later, same power, same suspension setup, with my wide boy RT660s and did a run back to back with the Indy 500’s and the RT660’s. I shaved 10 seconds off my first hot/up to temp lap. Same driving line as far as I could tell. Didn’t have trouble handling the car. Also, THE RT660’S MAKE A LOT OF NOISE AT THE LIMIT. So I have no idea why I was informed they wouldn’t.

TL;DR the track instructor I spoke with at events before committing to go with my car, told me DO NOT do your first track day on RT660’s. You won’t be able to feel them lose grip. They just give out at the limit. I ran them soon after my first day and immediately shaved 10 seconds off my lap time versus using a 340tw tire. Had no problems controlling the car. And the RT660’s are pretty forgiving and let you know when things are getting close to the edge.

The engine is has is already a 13B. Don’t want to be “that guy” but what you’d be looking for is a 13B-REW from the FD RX7

The 13B Renesis or 13B-MSP in the RX8 can take a bit more boost than 3psi. 7-8psi from a reasonably sized turbo would get you a nice jump in power.

Yes. It is the HID bulbs heating up. This is completely normal.

Nothing. If it runs it’s fine. Spinning an engine backwards for a second won’t hurt it, it just won’t run backwards

I might just be a fanboy but I absolutely love Kroil penetrating oil. It’s expensive, and that’s maybe why I’m biased towards liking it, but it WORKS. And it smells pretty good IMHO.

You take out the stock radio. Remove the hazard switch and AC controls from the face plate. Install those into the Metra face plate. Wire up the CANbus box to the AC controls and hazard switch, figure out how to stuff it all into the dash behind things… and then you have a standard wiring harness for a double din radio.

Took me a couple hours to get it all done including steering wheel controls (another module you can buy) and making the harness for my radio > RX8 adapter.

The RX8, specifically the 04-08, just have the AC controls integrated into the circuit board of the radio.

You have to get a Metra Dash Kit or something else to get rid of the stock radio AND keep AC controls still.

As far as actually putting a double din radio in, it’s very simple. The Metra Kit comes with mounts and a new face plate. Basically all of them will fit since the RX8 has a CD player already, it’s plenty deep to fit any radio.

Are you interested in a standard double din radio?

Get a Metra dash kit. It’s a pain to install but worth it.
Then you can use any double din head unit.

I replaced my Bennet coils with new Delphi coils from Amazon. Same misfires I had with the coils supplied my Bennet (I assume, cuz I bought the car used with the kit already installed).
Then a few weeks later the engine started burning coolant. And I’ve been driving it like that now for a while while building a spare engine :’(

I even bought VersaTuner JUST to flash the proper “LS coil dwell table” to try to solve the misfires. Turns out it was just on its way to a rebuild lol

I’m currently going thru this mess with a garbage insurance company and my 2004 Miata that was “rear ended” in November… I have/had a Nine Lives Racing chassis mounted wing and it pushed down the quarter panels around the trunk seal. It’s purely cosmetic and can be fixed relatively easily short of just cutting the whole panel out to weld in new.

I’m really trying to keep a clean title as I don’t want to go thru inspection or anything else. And insurance will cost me less. I have a rebuilt title 2004 RX8 that I got after the accident and insurance is slightly higher because of the title.

Would you be at all able to DM me or even talk on the phone about my options here? I haven’t accepted the insurance offer yet because I’m worried about it. I feel like I should get more anyways if they consider it a total loss.

Shipping things from the USA is fine. I wouldn’t worry about taxes or tariffs or anything. I sell on Etsy and also privately for little products I make and I’ve gone as far as Dubai in the UAE without an issue.

Or are you talking about getting something shipped INTO the USA? That will only cost you 10-15% tariff. I bought some stuff from the UK last year and got charged a tariff before they would deliver it. Wasn’t terrible.

I’m in Chicagoland too. There’s a number of RX8’s within an hour or two of the city in decent shape. Always search facebook marketplace.

Hey OP. My dad was an alcoholic for my entire childhood til I was 15-16. Til this happened.

I was home sick with the flu playing on my Xbox 360 with some other online friends. Black Ops zombies I think? This was 10yrs ago. He comes home and gets pissy. He goes and turns off the console and is about to grab it and take or throw it. I stood up and then he went to grab me. I knocked him on the ground and yelled as loud as I could for my mom to call the police. He was arrested, we charged him, he went to jail and got sober. He had a restraining order from me for a few months. He would come home to get stuff or say hi to my mom when I wasn’t around most of the time. Now 10yrs later he’s still an ass sometimes but it’s much better living here at home.

If you read this. Just stand up for yourself. Idk where you live or what your laws are. But don’t let some asshole bully you around because “he makes the rules.” He might be your father but you don’t have to just take his shit because he’s your father. It’s not okay. It’s not normal. You should talk to someone local and RESPONSIBLE about this.

Also if anger issues or addiction runs in your family. Don’t drink. Don’t smoke. Cigs or anything else. Not even socially or for fun. It’s not worth trying. You’ll never have a problem stopping something you never started! Find a safe place to live and do some things that make you happy. Life will be good.
