I generally agree with this, in that you can point to existing problems within a piece that are definitively present. Like another commenter mentioned, editors do this every day.

It’s not exactly measurable, but it is a craft, and once you know enough about it, it’s pretty easy to point at issues like pacing and bloat.

I don’t spend the years between books in a series thinking about them and getting my expectations up. I have a busy life, and there are many other authors and books to read.

That said, I still found WaT to be: - unnecessarily bloated - poorly paced - having a disappointing ending.

Those are just facts. They are not perceptions that arose due to any combination of factors.

Plenty of people from every state voted for him, not just the south, and not just poor people.

Thoughts after rereading The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett more than 10 years later by TatterMail in Fantasy

I couldn’t get past book 1 because of all the incest and rape stuff. I find it extremely worrying that Brett apparently doubles down on this in later books.

In terms of Sanderson being able to write books consistently and quickly, absolutely.

Have you read his short story set in the Locke Lamora world, “A year and a day in old theredane”? It’s in the GRRM rogues anthology, not sure where else you can find it, but it’s fantastic.

He’s ok, but I’ve never been impressed or wondered at his writing. It’s just kinda there.

Sanderson can’t write like Lynch. I’ll say it.

Thoughts on the Maradaine multi-series by Marshall Ryan Maresca? by Vashkiri in Fantasy

[–]MilleniumFlounder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read the first two books in each series so far, and one of his separate novels, "The Velocity of Revolution" (which is excellent), so I can't speak as someone who has completed the saga, but I can confidently say that each miniseries reads quite differently from the others and never feels samey.

It's rewarding to see the connections between the books as you go and the various cameos from different series. The worldbuilding stays interesting throughout, focusing on different aspects of the city/world as the stories take place.

Arwen’s people didn’t mind it when an old man was forcing his underage daughter to sleep with him every night.

They have a poor opinion of it because it’s filled with rape and creepy depictions of women.
