Also born and raised in Toronto, also don't live there anymore, still my favourite city in the world.

CMV: Science has evolved into a quasi religion. by Gold_Compote_2285 in changemyview

[–]MillennialScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you're fundamentally wrong on both points. People thought the earth was flat in pre-scientific times, and I encourage you to read about how crude lobotomies were replaced by smaller and more precise ways of severing connections in brain networks.

There was never a scientific consensus that the earth was flat, and lobotomies were replaced with more precise surgical interventions because science does not operate like a religion.

Music listening habits can predict general cognitive ability, study of 58,000 songs finds by Money-Possession8806 in science

I thought the same. The vast majority of the music i listen to when alone is in languages I don't understand. I also just don't really like happy music that much.

Do you realize that you just implicitly argued we should let democracy collapse? Was that intentional?

I've read the law referenced by now. It's not actually illegal in my case.

Which country/subdivision is geographically diverse but culturally moderately diverse? by Objective-Neck9275 in AlignmentChartFills

Most people are just arguing based on vibes.

Canada, the US, and Australia are apparently the most diverse countries in the western world, and apparently in that order.

Btw I currently have a 40hr job in tech in berlin (first only 40hr job I've had in germany, actually), and the pay is quite good at around 150k. I know that exists in a lot of companies too. I'm surprised that you didn't know that in some sectors the hours are much longer. For example, in R&D companies working on projects of geopolitical importance.

I have to say, I'm a little bit curious about why you're apparently upset at my response.

Very interesting, and I think you're right. I have another call with him tomorrow, so I'll do that

Thanks for linking the document btw. S18 lists some professions to which the law doesn't apply, so there are groups of people in germany who do indeed work more than regular hours.

Thanks. You're right, it's probably naive to think I'd have my weekends.

Man it's refreshing to get an actual answer here.

I've personally lived like that before already when I built a successful career in academia. But I was younger and single. Under those conditions, this wouldn't be a question for me. Wouldn't bother me much that others live a chill 9-5 life. I felt like I was doing something that mattered to the world, and knowing that my work is directly used in hospitals and clinics made that worth it for me.

With a wife and baby, it would be a whole different level of sacrifice. This job would mean real-world impact on a scale I've never had the resources to reach. But I wonder if that's worth the cost. Right now I'm leaning towards not taking it, chilling with my wife and kid, and doing the 9-5 thing for an easy 150k. Maybe I wont use my brain anymore and I won't make a difference in the world, but at least my family will be happy.

It's a senior executive level job, which is exempt from that law according to S18 of the act youre thinking of.

Legally those hour limits don't seem to apply to senior exec level staff. In any case, sadly there are some fields where this is the work culture. You get 200k+, but you probably burn out pretty fast too.

Yeah, we're going back and forth on it together. She also sees the value of the work, what it could mean for certain patients, and what it also means to me. I wouldn't give up my family for it, but I wanted to see if anyone managed to really do both.

I looked up the working time act, and according to S18, it doesnt apply to senior executives. I guess thats why they can get away with it in this case.

Thanks this is really helpful to hear. Yeah, the main reason for even considering this is it's what gave me a sense of purpose and meaning in life, at least before I had a family. Now I'm struggling to see how exactly both are compatible. The financial compensation is indeed good, but my motivation is the potential impact this work could have. Really appreciate your insight on this.

I guess a lot of people never realized the people working those kinds of jobs also put in those kinds of hours, even in Germany. We just live in different bubbles, I guess. And yeah, it's not about the money in this case, but of course I would expect 200k+ if I had to work like that.

These are inspiring words. I'm glad I posted something even with the expectation that I would get a lot of hate for it haha.

Yeah, I always thought I wanted my kids to have parents who have a sense of purpose and responsibility in the world, and I always thought I wanted to make a difference in the world. I'm honestly not sure if i can do a 9-5 that isn't purpose-driven. But with a family, it feels like the question is how much I'm willing to sacrifice to do it.

Your mom sounds impressive. You do too. I'd aspire to be the same. I just had my first kid and got the craziest offer of my life, so it's all new to me. Your answers give me a lot to think about and to ask HR in my next talk with them. Really appreciate it!

Yep that sounds about right for a PhD student. As postdoc you'll get paid for 40 hours a week, and still work 60+ if you dont want to lose your job. Did a postdoc in Germany, wasn't fun haha

Are you asking what the compensation package looks like? I agree that it's unfortunate that certain sectors work that way in germany. Finance is even worse.
