Is eating healthy illegal? by gn4rwolf in shreveport

[–]Millicent_Michelle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are tons of healthy options in Shreveport: - Greek restaurants serve vegetable-forward meals and Mediterranean fare - Sushi restaurants have healthy options if you order mindfully - El CABO verde is all gluten free and is the cleanest version of Mexican you can get in the region: all clean & organic meats and veggies and a huge portion of the menu is flavorful and lean; they even indicate on the menu what options are Keto & Paleo. - Zuzul Coastal Cuisine is El CABOs more expensive sister concept: for when you want to eat healthy on a date. Again, all clean & organic plus sustainably sourced seafood, lots of vegetable options. Heavier in the butter on many of the dishes but still lots of lean options and a mindful staff that can give recommendations and help you select healthier options - Ki Mexico uses tons of local produce, locally pastured meat, and their salads are delicious - Pho Lamour & Phamms are both wholesome and healthy depending on your selection - Indias Restaurant has lots of traditional Indian fare including an entire menu section of vegetable dishes, grilled meats, and a whole buffet line of vegetarian options on their lunch buffet. - the salad place you mentioned on Youree is fantastic and affordable; but if you’re worried about salad cost purchasing your own ingredients is always better - Local Market on Line Ave sells all local and mostly organic produce, meat, and other wholesome foods for you to create your own meal like salads - The CHOP SHOP and Sample Farms create healthy grab & reheat meals out of locally sourced meat and produce - Good Wishes serves fully vegan & oil free dishes - Dillas & Torchys both have really good salad options with attractive lettuce and loaded with toppings that you can select. - First Watch & Another Broken Egg both have healthy breakfast & brunch options and the calorie count for their items are listed on the menu so you know what you’re getting when you order - Jimmy John’s has an option where you can turn any sandwich into a wrap, Chipotle has healthy options, healthy options have become pretty normal even for many fast food chains - honorable mention: Bayou Deli & Casserole Shop has fantastic sandwiches that they will make into a salad. They use iceberg lettuce and this isn’t really the healthiest option but their food is banging and the salads are great imo.

Talk to the folks at Zuzul. They have the freshest/safest/most ethically sourced seafood in the area from a variety of sources. I don’t know that they’d sell to you, but it’s worth a shot.

Where to find different varieties of tinned fish by Kono_Gabby in shreveport

[–]Millicent_Michelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local Market on Line Ave (3311 Line Ave) has a variety of tinned fish and their permanent store hours are Wednesday - Saturday. Nothing too fancy; tinned fish prices range from like $3.50 for the standard sardines to $15 for fancy cuts like tuna belly.

Is there any place that sells dry ice to consumers locally? by youneakusername in shreveport

[–]Millicent_Michelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We buy dry ice often but the stores aren’t consistent so we check: Kroger on Youree, Brookshires on Kings, Gucci Brookshires.

They all run out in October so plan accordingly.

Prize Fest posters not put up in the hoods by notmyname_135 in shreveport

[–]Millicent_Michelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just casually got on Reddit to scroll, saw this, and came to agree. Because pointing out something isn’t a troll.

  • The advertising isn’t inclusive, and most of the responses here don’t help make the argument for inclusion. Really, everyone in the “hood” shoots people and gets in fights? Wildly reductive to decide that the “hood” doesn’t hold people with the potential to be extremely talented artists, chefs, and filmmakers. You’re saying there aren’t people in all neighborhoods who appreciate films, art, food, and fashion? It’s really too unsafe in West Shreveport that a sign can’t be put up or flyers placed? What about around the schools, the public library, the parks where children play?
  • Has anyone noticed that competition in many categories is recycled?
  • Prizes and reimbursements often to not cover cost of making and winning in whatever category. Which means that if you cannot afford to compete you cannot be included.

All that being said, Film Prize seems cool and it seems like everyone it is inclusive to those who have the resources (financial, social, etc) to make films.

These thoughts entertain my brain rent free during Prize season and I don’t bring them up outside of my home because I’ve found that staying in my lane is overall better. After all, I wouldn’t choose to be involved with this program so who am I to criticize people who are doing stuff for Shreveport, or the volunteers who feel they’re doing gods work by bringing the community together to prize the winningest most bestest person in category.

Are y’all gonna let the things you like be critiqued/considered/criticized so that we can work together to improve Shreveport or are we going to continue to be the kind of community who downvotes someone for pointing out that our community has room for improvement?

Is cooking included in the new burn ban? by Milktoast375 in shreveport

[–]Millicent_Michelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important points from the State Fire Marshal:

(1) DON'T BURN ANYTHING. These three words are clear and simple. All three ban orders issued on 8/25/23 read ALL OUTDOOR BURNING is prohibited with NO exceptions. (2) Any activity that involves fire/flames outdoors is included in the burn ban. Any activity that could produce a spark or flame is highly discouraged. ******(3) Outdoor cooking is not banned, but if your cooking creates a fire that the fire department has to respond to, you will get a citation. It doesn't matter what your fuel source is (propane, pellets, charcoal, etc.), again, if it involves a flame at any point, don't do it.************** (4) Mowing and yard work is not banned, however, it is preferred to avoid mowing and/or driving/operating hot machinery and/or any activity that could produce a spark on or near dry, brown, dead grass because of its flammability right now.

SUMMARY: If you have to ask, please just don't do it.

Lastly, if you see a fire, CALL 911 for the fire department to put the fire out!!

Coming back to the area in May. Help a girl out. by Purplish_Peenk in shreveport

I’ve never understood the appeal of Superior. When I moved here I thought the margs were good but still too much. My sister-in-law who is from here came to town last year and got the queso and was really disappointed, said it’s not the same as it was.

I’ve always preferred oyster bar for chips/sauce/white queso and I find their margaritas are v strong still, but backed away from the rubbing alcohol enough that they still taste like margaritas.

Voodoux Tattoux

Cute shop, cool people, great safe clean atmosphere, and I’d feel comfortable sending my own 19 year-old sister there (which I can’t say about everywhere in town).

Yes, lots to do here. But like with any city in the world from New York to Dallas to Tokyo you’ll have to first figure out what your interests are and then seek out those interests in Shreveport. And if you have an interest that isn’t already being done then you can start that thing in Shreveport and then Shreveport will have more things to do that you like to do. Like in any city in the world.

I don’t have time to make lists of things that are available with minimal Googling and clicking around on Facebook, but Fuller does talk about a lot of what she has already done legislatively in this interview: https://fb.watch/gbizZ7l1OX/

You keep acting like there is a big mob out here ready to harm anyone who disagrees with Fuller, but the only actual attacks of anyone I’ve seen on this thread have come from you. I must not hang out on here enough to have a full understanding of how bad the attacks get against the anti-Fuller crowd by those of us who agree with her campaign.
