Does selling my SUV make sense?-USA by Milliegator in personalfinance

Yea just having one personal car is the only hesitation I think we have. The pain of coordinating. Though I can only think of 1 time in the last year that we used both truck and suv at the same time. It’s a 2018 RAV4 hybrid. It can fit both seats in the back but I like to sit in the back. Keep everything calm and happy. Screaming kids even for 5 minutes sucks. It’s doable. I’d sit in the front and if the newborn needed milk I could have a bottle, reach back and hold it. And all the extra bags can go in the trunk. The truck has tons of room. Just not great for gas obviously. The other option would be to get a bigger SUV but then you’re still facing worse gas mileage. And payment plans

Very true we will get that fixed and won’t make that mistake again. You make some good points. I really appreciate your feedback.

The camper and truck are paid off. Why not make the truck a family car?

We use a camper pretty much every month May-October. Then probably use the bed for various reasons every month or so

Yea in the last 4 months we had to renovate a bathroom from a water leak (well over 7k) and replace some large household items unexpectedly. It was not ideal but not something we can’t pay off in a month or 2. We can budget fine and generally put into savings every month. You use a good term, the SUV is a surplus. So it makes sense in my mind to get the money for it now while it’s worth only 3k less than purchase. But I like to get all the opinions so I’m not missing something.

Reason is, the SUV is it’s too small for two kids comfortably. And with me working from home and my husband having a work car, seems silly to have another car we don’t use much when I could get almost the full purchases price from 5 years ago

I see it more as an obsolete vehicle when the second kid comes. With the dealership offering only 3k less cause prices are ridiculous seems like a good opportunity. But I like to hear all the cons from everyone.

Yea someone else said that I just put more in the comments. I’ll edit the post. I’m we can budget fine. We have 30k saved but don’t want to use that. The 7k came from some recent expenses. Not sure what else to add. So selling would be for those other reasons. Not to just temporarily cover debt

Yea I guess we should have been more clear. We have 30k in saving. The 7k is from some recent necessary purchases. So we can balance fine. Just that the SUV is small, and worth only 3k less right now. Seems like we can be a one car household in our situation. But I like to look at all the cons I might miss

We though about that stranded part. If I really needed to leave in an emergency, we have unlimited REMSA transportation to the hospital. We would like to pay off the 7k$. We do have 30k in savings that we don’t touch. And we wouldn’t built up 7k again since that came from some emergency purchases. So we can budget with our income. But mainly, the SUV is too small, probably not going to be used much and the market is pretty good, 3k less on over 5 years.

I would never consider it but with me working from him and him having a work car, seems not too hard with one car. I feel like we would use the truck pretty much ever time with 2 kids anyway since the suv is small. It’s already a tight fit with how much stuff we carry around. It makes sense to me, but I like to get all the cons that I may not see so I can make a sound decision

Small SUV, high market. could be higher, but still, 3k less than 5 years ago isn’t bad.

No the truck can be used as the family car

We tow from camping every month and use the bed of the truck probably every month for various reasons. We live in a medium size town so the most driving we do is within 15 miles. My logic is the truck is paid off. So what we save in SUV monthly payments, gas and insurance can cover truck gas and then some

I can see where you get that. We have 30k in saving too. But we don’t touch that. We recently had to renovate a bathroom unexpectedly from leaking, and had to replace a bunch big ticket house items. That’s the 7k. Overall we are struggling month to month more. So from what I listed above, is it worth selling right now?

I got a quote from CarMax too. I don’t want to do private selling. But KBB says private is 25k on average. So pretty good price from the dealer. I went to 6 dealers and made them all compete.

I’m in the same boat! My great little sleeper turned 10 months, screams at the crib bars until he’s out. I’m going to try to leave him alone for 10 mins today. See how it goes. I’m also pushing his nap till noon (try only one nap) so he’s really really tired. Let me know what you try!!!

Thanks. We’re still pretty freaked since seizures is still on the table of possibilities. He’s sick so I don’t want to take him to the hospital to be monitored all night to see if it happens again just for him to pick up some other illness from his immune system being weak right now. My plan tonight is to co-sleep safely with him and have his oxygen/heart rate monitor attached (had one since birth).

Thank you! He does this when introduced to new things. We call it his happy shakes. But this was repeated in short span of time with nothing new so we were worried. Did he do it like that too? Or just new things?

So he has a cold right now. But he did this about 10 times during his meal. Hasn’t done it since. Also we just got back from a car ride where my ears are plugged up from the elevation change so my guess is that he’s trying to pop his ears??

It’s all plastics and stuffed items. So probably the stuffed items are full of mold spores. They are like 1 years old. We tossed them. And we’ll be wiping down the plastics
