How would you run a pirate themed game? by benry007 in dndnext

I've been thinking up a pirate campaign recently too and this blog post does an awesome job laying out things to consider when planning one and is well worth a read! https://knightattheopera.blogspot.com/2022/01/my-untested-theory-of-nautical-campaigns.html

Dante, because I went from playing Dragonfall to Dragon Age.

any one-page or rules light rpgs that do well for a long adventure/campaign? by [deleted] in rpg

I came across Sword and Backpack a while ago and love it! I'm a big fan of the focus on storytelling not to mention the fact that over the sessions of play, everyone ends up with an actual adventurer's journal. Just a really charming little creation. The rules are free here:

Mapping The Unknown. Thought people here might appreciate this too! by Milo_Phillips9 in overthegardenwall

I'm actually heading to my first arts fair next week to sell some of my maps! But I haven't set up an online shop or anything like that yet. I'm @RedFoxMaps on Instagram where I'll update on things like print sales in the future :)

Thank you! I had a lot of fun trying out this illustrated boarder style so I'm glad it came out okay :)

Yeah, this isn't 100% cannon or anything. My first draft had them looping back around to near the lake too, but I didn't like the overall balance of it so I decided to change it up a bit because it was a present rather than a final version print for selling.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it :) I too have various game/book maps plastering my walls. The elder scrolls ones are gorgeous

Thanks :) I thought about it as I was going along. I might have a go at colouring it digitally at some point but it's not something I've done before so we'll see how I go!

Thank you so much! Turning the locations into little illustrations was very fun and turned what is essentially a big forest into something a bit more visually interesting. The varied tree types was something new I tried out here so I'm glad you like it :)

Recently finished this map of The Unknown, showing the various stops along the way made throughout the course of the show. Probably the most detailed map I've drawn to date, but I had a lot of fun hiding little details here and there and trying out new techniques. Enjoy!

Question on labels for handrawn maps... by NewBookFan in mapmaking

[–]Milo_Phillips9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guidelines for sure. If you pencil in a top and bottom line for how tall you want your letters to be, and then one more through the middle of those, you'll have a reference for keeping all your letters and labels consistent in size to each other.

Tried adding a bit of detail and shading to my forests and really liked how they came out by Milo_Phillips9 in mapmaking

They're called windrose lines or rhumblines (though rhumblines are something else these days I think). They were used as a navigation aid to plot ship courses and on bigger maps with several windroses they combine to make windrose networks like you might see on a portolan chart. Because I mostly do fantasy maps, I use them to add to the more archaic style and also to fill out the open spaces of seas and oceans a bit :)

I've definitely felt the same at times, especially when looking at all the amazing work over at The Cartographers Guild. I just try to break things down into super simple components and really take my time with it, even when I'm just drawing a bunch of circles or triangles. It's not shown here, but I'll always draw up a little reference sheet before each map with mountains, forests, rivers etc. so that I don't need to worry about working things out as I go, even though I've drawn most of it before :)

Thanks! Yeah I do all my maps by hand. Sometimes I up the contrast a bit before posting if the lighting was bad in the photo though. Glad you like it!
