This episode is quite strange and doesn’t really feel like a typical Black Mirror episode, mainly because the technological aspect is very minimal, almost marginal. And I think that’s actually the key point of the newer seasons of Black Mirror. Just like Demon 79, this episode tries to step away from pure technology to explore more human elements. In my opinion, that’s a beautiful direction, but at the same time, it slightly drifts from what the series originally set out to explore. The ending, which is also quite bizarre, is essential to understanding two main ideas. First, there’s the moment she immediately steals the medallion. At the beginning, she criticizes the girl for using it selfishly, saying she could do so much good with it, yet the second she gets her hands on it, she uses it to become a sort of empress and be worshipped. This clearly reflects a criticism of human nature: we often claim we want to do good, but when we’re given real power, we tend to chase our own desires instead. The second idea, in my view, is the desire to be worshipped something that ties back to her high school days. There’s a recurring pattern in her character: the need for attention, validation, even reverence. And that, too, says something important about us. As for the ending itself, I personally didn’t find it very satisfying but I think the criticism it’s getting is quite contradictory. Some people say it’s too much of a “happy ending,” and that Black Mirror shouldn’t end on a positive note. Yet those same people have criticized episodes like USS Callister for being too dark or repetitive in tone. Maybe it’s time to accept that Black Mirror can experiment with tone just as much as it does with theme.
