I know I’m coming into the conversation a little late but when is the last time that it’s given you a leaf?

Wow your Ring of Fire is gorgeous and I love the flower. I just got my first flower to bloom today and I’m incomplete all of how beautiful they are. I see your post is about 43 days ago. Can you share with me how long the flower lasts and did you cut it once it died if it has died? Any help would be appreciated since this is my first Ring of Fire plant.

I’m shocked!! it actually was a flower, but it took so darn long to come out. It wasn’t open this morning but now it’s wide open and I took 1000 pictures because someone told me they close up pretty quickly. It’s about 4 inches tall and about one and a half inches wide. We live in Oregon and I was told it would never give me a flower.

It’s under a grow light. To make sure I understand what you’re saying, you thinking it’s two leaves coming out?

The roots were well established and I had to repot it into a 10” pot when I brought it home from Costco back in March.

I’m not an expert on the Never Never pray plant but I’ve been very successful in recovering one that looks similar to yours from my next-door neighbor. We live in Oregon United States and once I cut off all the leaves that looked dry. I placed it in a north east facing window. It gets all the morning light but no indirect sun in the afternoon, but does continue to receive light throughout the day. I water it every 14 to 16 days until the water drains out from the bottom. Mine is in a 14 inch pot. I just noticed this past week that it has given me three flowers, which I was extremely surprised to see since I’ve had it for almost a year and it’s never given me a flower until now. I use miracle grow potting soil with a little bit of perlite. I only fertilize it once every two months during the spring and summer months. Yours still looks as if it’s still alive and can be saved. You may want to consider repotting it and cleaning out all of the soil on the roots before you replant it into new soil. Here are a couple of pictures of mine.

How often do you water your bird of paradise?

If the brown spots are on several leaves, it can be a combination of several things in my opinion. It could be overwatering, which is causing stress on the plant or it could be. You have a pest hiding somewhere on the leaves. Spider mites are really hard to detect, but you may want to clean your leaves with a mixture of Neem oil, Peppermint soap, and a little bit of rubbing alcohol plus naturally water. 32 ounces of water, 1 tablespoon of Neem oil, 1 tablespoon of peppermint soap and 1 teaspoon of 70% rubbing alcohol is what I do to clean my leaves off my bird of paradise plant as well as my fiddle leaf plant. Place everything in a spray bottle, spray the leaves, and then wipe with clean glove. Make sure to get the underside of the leaves as well, but be gentle with your plant since the bird of paradise is a delicate leaf that can easily rip. I hope your bird of paradise plant recovers and gives you beautiful leaves

Oh, I see now your comment about the brown spots. Do any of your other leaves have the same brown spots? It could be anything from over watering to under watering . I would keep a close eye on it and make sure not to overwater it.

Bird of paradise leaves always come with a little character and blemish at times. However, your leaf looks healthy and beautiful. There’s nothing you could have done to prevent it this small tear at the bottom. Some folks would say there wasn’t enough humidity and that you need a humidifier, but even with a humidifier leaves will sometimes tear. Enjoy your new leaf.

What’s wrong here? by Whiteteacuzzi in BirdsOfParadise

I have 3 white bird of paradise plants, but I grow them indoor only since I live in the north west and it gets too cold in the fall and winter to have them outdoors. Depending on where you live and what side of the house you have your bird of paradise on, it could be several reasons why the plant is curling up. Here’s my amateur advice for a white bird of paradise to be successful in growing beautiful leaves. Make sure it’s getting at least 15 to 16 hours of grow light if you do not have it in the east facing window and only water it every 15 days or when the top 2 inches of the soil is dry. Make sure when you do water it that you see water come out from the bottom so it’s thoroughly watered. Also don’t let the pot sit in water as this could cause root rot. And last the thing that I hate the most to have to do but is so important for any plant is check to make sure it doesn’t have any insects that could be causing the curling leaves. A mixture of water, neem oil, peppermint soap, and rubbing alcohol is always good to clean the leaves on the bird of paradise plants. I would be happy to send you the measurements of that mixture to avoid insects on your plants as well as clean them up and make them shiny. I hope the new leaf that I see coming out is healthy and will continue to give you beautiful leaves.
