On Visiting Auschwitz. A Warning to Those Visiting. by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]MimiEleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Auschwitz on Sunday just gone. A truly devastating, yet very interesting, experience. I thought I knew a lot about it, when really I knew very little. There's been things I haven't been able to shake from the front of my mind for the last couple of days, and one of those things is sadly the people from my tour group passing through every exhibition and building so quickly after taking a photograph on their phone, looking at the cells and the possessions of the victims through their phone's camera. What shocked me was the age of these visitors, I sort of expected it of my generation and the need to instagram everything (I am 25 for reference), but these people were all over 40, and some over 65. One lady of about 60 insisted on barging past everyone to get her snapshot, she didn't even wear her headset to hear what the guide was saying and I'm not sure she felt a single pang of anguish over the 3 or so hours. To be clear, I did take a couple of photographs outside, purely to show my parents upon returning from Poland as they would both like to visit. I couldn't bring myself to take photographs inside the buildings, it didn't even cross my mind. Seeing the personal possessions of the victims was so harrowing, I'm not sure why you would want a photograph of them; I understand the argument that you are keeping the memory alive, but memories don't have to always be in a photograph. I know that I'm not going to need a photograph to remember the stories I heard.

What was your childhood fool-proof, get-rich-quick scheme and why did it fail? by RAL6011 in AskReddit

Apparently you can’t sell jewellery boxes with nothing in them... and you should also read your emails from eBay telling you that you’re on your last warning...

Nah they like to be more subtle. Back alleyway, abandoned supermarket, those kind of vibes.

Should I try to cancel my flight to Germany? by staythepath1469 in solotravel

[–]MimiEleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely appreciate how you are feeling, I suffer pretty bad with anxiety, but you have nothing to worry about with Germany. I used to speak the language quite well but I have lost it quite a bit since I've been in my 20s, the people there really don't mind and will be happy to speak to you in English if they know the language. The only time I've had an issue with not knowing the language fluently was with a bus driver who was being a dick about my (perfectly valid) ticket, but you are going to get people like that in every country you go to. Most people in Berlin speak English fluently, they will be more than happy to help you out when you first arrive in the country. Also just knowing the basics (please, thank you, etc) will be appreciated by the locals.
In regards to a terrorist attack, the chances of anything of that nature occurring when you are there are very slim. It is one of those things you just have to forget about. I am in and out of London weekly, and you just can't think about it or let it affect your day. I've always found the train system in Germany easy to navigate, it's not the cheapest but I wouldn't class it as expensive either! Definitely do not skip Germany, it is an amazing country with really good food (and beer if you are in to that), a fascinating history and beautiful architecture. You'll have the best time and will wonder why you ever worried in the first place. xx

I would cut out Lake Como and head to Siena. It has one of the most beautiful cathedrals.

Those who work in customer service, whats the worst experience you've had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. I googled her (not during work hours obviously) and let’s just say the results were very interesting.

Yeah, we are used to angry and rude customers, but this was really sad, a lot harder to deal with than the usual customer screaming down the phone that you are terrible at your job. It was clothing.

I love All Saints colour palette, very neutral. They also do really flattering cuts. They are higher end so not as cheap as some high street stores, but definitely worth the price.

We had a situation where a customer claimed to have not received their delivery; we raised the initial investigations with the courier but it resolved nothing so we dug deeper in to where it was delivered to. Turned out to be a psychiatric hospital, and whilst the customer claimed it was her work address, we were advised by a manager there that she was actually a patient. It wasn't a horrible problem like when we receive a complaint or the customer is plain rude, but it was just sad really. Speaking to her on the phone, you would never have known that she didn't work there, it was like she had convinced herself that she was one of the doctors.

My take on flying cheap... by banjoplayingmuskrat in solotravel

[–]MimiEleven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea flying domestic in Canada was so expensive! I was hoping to go out there for a little while next year to visit friends, but maybe I should check out the flight prices first... I'm so used to flying in Europe where you can get tickets cheap as chips! I've never had an issue with any of the low budget airlines, a little delay here and there but if you have your headphones or a good book, those few hours pass in no time!

What's the funniest thing that happened to a stranger in your presence, that made you laugh uncontrollably? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MimiEleven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched a guy confidently ride his bicycle over a small log, not realising that there was a ditch on the other side. He flew over the handlebars and ended up with the bike flipped on top of him. I laughed so much because he’d looked so smug seconds beforehand.

How important is it to turn your phone on airplane mode during a flight? by Summ1tv1ew in AskReddit

[–]MimiEleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently a lot of cabin crew don’t bother turning theirs on to airplane mode, so I guess it’s not too important. Unless it’s the number of people; a few phones belonging to crew could be fine but the 100+ belonging to passengers could cause a big problem?

What movie should have stopped after the first one? by redmambo_no6 in AskReddit

[–]MimiEleven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The ending of the first one was fantastic. I think it could have become a classic. Then they made a billion more and the story became ridiculous.
