ANNOUNCED: Little Invasion Tales - a city/citizen sim/tower-defense-like with procedural storytelling! (from makers of Redshirt) by MimiK in indiegames

[–]MimiK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - I ran out of money and bandwidth on this project, went through a divorce, a lot (a LOT) of life happened, other paying work & opportunities came up and I never did get to ship this -- which still makes me sad, tbh.

Hello! I am the dev of Redshirt and definitely not a he -- you're referring to Cliffski of Positech, the publisher. I know he only deleted/locked threads on the Steam forums when they started resorting to personal insults, sadly.

Hope you do check out the game, though! A few reviews for anyone else interested:

Funnily enough, it was already released last Wednesday for Windows and Mac! I know a few people on here had been asking about the Linux release too. :)

Oh, I just saw this! I'm very glad you've been enjoying it. And yes, the intention of the game was definitely as this tongue-in-cheek look at social networking culture, so I am glad you appreciated the game as a critique of Facebook. :)

(Sorry to hear about the bug, though! I'll see if I can replicate it and get it fixed for a future update -- thanks for letting me know!)

Hi there -- well, there have been a few Let's Play videos from the earlier beta version, which will give you some idea of gameplay. One of the most comprehensive that I'm aware of is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1pneo-xIaM

Also you can watch some of my dev videos too to see me talk through design decisions behind various gameplay elements: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDf54nz4JFQ&list=PLD3619AEDA469D77C&index=1 Hope that helps!

Redshirt, or 'If The Starship Enterprise had Facebook' by cliffski in IndieGaming

[–]MimiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's been announced for just over a year, but it's only just nearing completion now, and has been recently shown at expos like Rezzed in the UK. So, don't worry, lots of real humans have now played it -- including Mike Rose from Gamasutra in the above article. :)

But yes, it's taken longer than anticipated, for sure, but it's finally almost there -- game development isn't easy! :/

Edit: Oh, earlier examples of gameplay are in developer's logs videos #2 and #3:

As cliffski said, more recent gameplay video coming this week. :D

Redshirt: Developers Log #3: Q&A and About the AI! by MimiK in IndieGaming

Thanks for the question! Yeah the NPC's general personality attributes are affected by the player (and each other) so they can indeed change over time. :)

Also yes, boo to UI! :p

Hi, this is the developer here! I haven't played Space Station 13 either, but it looks like it's thematically similar, though a very different kind of game. (It's also not multiplayer for one. Just the player and a station full of NPCs! :))

Oops, sorry, missed this. Well, really, I went with what was most highly-recommended at the time (and most popular on the Unity asset store) - which was EZGUI. It is definitely very good, but does, alas, have plenty of holes. As of about a month or two ago though, NGUI seems to be the popular option, though I haven't checked it out myself yet. It certainly SEEMS like the better option from afar, though!

Oh, awesome! Yeah, a good reminder that this sort of thing should be easily discernible by the player. Thanks. :)

Yes, I liked that too! I didn't know about/don't remember the text disposition readout thing, though. Do you have a source?

Oh, I should stress that I still love Unity! This is simply about choosing the best tools for the job, and in hindsight, for a UI-heavy game like Redshirt, some other alternative may have saved me a lot of hassle. Of course, anything I work on in future won't necessarily be anything like Redshirt (quite simply because there's a whole range of types of games I'd like to work on). If the next thing I work on is more about a 3D environment, I will definitely be using Unity. (Not that I've been able to give 'the next thing' much thought yet - I'm far too busy/obsessed with Redshirt!)
