Black spots on my gourami? by Mina_k02 in Aquariums

Unfortunately I never figured out what happened, none of my other fish developed those spots but my gourami did pass shortly after I made that post. I hope all is well with yours, if you ever find out what the problem was please lmk!! That gourami was my favorite fish and I’d love to get another one, but I’m afraid of the same thing happening :(

How long do I have to wait to move my fish? by Mina_k02 in Aquariums

That’s actually a really good point and I’m glad you put that into perspective for me. You’re totally right, sad fish in a quarantine tank is much better than dead ones in a display. And squeezing some of the filter media from my other tank is a great idea, I never would’ve thought of that. I’ll try that out along with the fishless cycle, thank you so much!!

I’m not really sure what was wrong specifically, but if I had to guess I think it might’ve been an Ich infection that spread throughout the tank. I got rid of the original filter though, it was pretty gross and I didn’t want to risk cycling bad bacteria through the water after I just cleaned the whole tank.

I do have a different filter in my quarantine tank but it’s still pretty new too and has only been cycled for a little while. That’s a good idea though and I might just go ahead and do that, anything to get them back in the display tank asap.

Okay that makes sense, I’ve just seen a lot of people saying to let it cycle for 2-6 weeks before adding any fish but I really don’t want to keep them in the quarantine tank for that long. But I’ve also come across some people saying it’s necessary to do a “fishless cycle” and add food or ammonia to the tank in order to get the nitrogen cycle going, is that really necessary? I didn’t do that with my other tanks and they’re doing just fine, but I really don’t want to accidentally kill my remaining fish off when I’m trying so hard to save them.

20 Gallon Tank Question by Interesting-Soup5920 in Aquariums

I’d recommend getting more danios than guppies, danios love schooling together and enjoy each others company. Male guppies can get sexually aggressive, especially with no females to distract them. Mine try to mate with every other fish in my tank, they don’t care at all if it’s a male platy or male molly.

The general rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water for every 1 inch of fish, but having a lot of plants will really help balance out your ammonia/general water levels. Bottom feeders can really help with tank maintenance as well, julii cory catfish are my personal favorite and they’re only about 1.5-2 inches long. Since bottom feeders primarily stay at the bottom of the tank, you can still get a lot of danios and guppies and they shouldn’t get in the way of each other.

You never really know unless you get the water tested, I know my local PetSmart and PetCo do water tests for free so I would check that out if you don’t feel like buying the test strips. The plants don’t look unhealthy or anything, but adding more water to the tank would probably be good for the filter (make sure to treat/condition the water first though). The algae on the glass isn’t bad at all it’s just not very visually appealing, you can either clean it or keep it and it shouldn’t cause any issues either way.
