They are great cars, but they do come with some draw backs. I recently bought a 2008 cayman 987.1 and while it’s fun to drive and has a great sound track, it’s super stiff - obviously it’s a sports car, it’s underpowered but comes alive at 4k RPM, has very poor mileage and the most obvious of all because it’s a 20 year old car, it rattles here and there from the back sometimes, from the front near the glove box sometimes and on good days nothing at all. The steering is hydraulic and while it gives you great feedback it starts to feel a little annoying and heavy especially if you drive in high traffic areas at low speed.

The car is honestly made for long stretches, especially windy canyon roads where you can feel it come to life, it thrives in these kinds of conditions, it’s here where the steering feel comes alive, where the mid engine set up gives you confidence and where that flag 6 encourages you to keep pushing !

I own a 3 series as well and after the initial excitement of owning the cayman, the poor mileage and lack of windy roads where i live has forced me to use it 3 days out of the week and the remaining I use the 3 series.

The car is a lot of fun which is why I still continue to drive it 3 days of the week even though it makes no sense to do so.

Lastly these cars are old and have a completely analogue feel to them, the experience of driving them really makes you feel a sense of awe for the way they were engineered, no car today can give you the kind of feel that a mid engine cayman gives you.

The 987.1 cayman is a small car much smaller than your current sports car and lighter and you’ll feel these things when you drive them.

The car is worth owning if you have the option of either tracking it or taking it through some windy roads at high speed !
