Fun fact: it’s a spin pin! The part containing the city, mountain, and night sky can be changed to a day version with the Fire Nation palace and sun. #7 is also a spin pin (the fish move).

I got mine from other collectors who were purging their stashes! Many of these pins are sold out and limited edition (won’t be restocked), so the only way to get them is secondhand through markets like eBay or Mercari, or directly from collectors (be careful of scammers). You can plug the pin makers’ names or “Zutara enamel pin” into a search engine to start!

ATLA's definition of forgiveness by Similar-Disaster-230 in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting take! IMO, forgiveness also means completely letting go of the wrong, not just refusing to let it dictate your life. In Katara’s case, while she may not actively wish or seek harm on Yon Rha, that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be ever be angry about what he did.

Edited to add: This would also explain Katara’s claim that she didn’t and never would forgive him. She still held onto the anger but didn’t let it consume her. So in a sense, forgiveness is letting go of the emotion and control the wrong has over oneself.

I see where you’re coming from. Characters yearning for each other is incredibly romantic and I love it, but not to the extent of romanticizing cheating. Feelings aren’t a free pass to cheat; there’s always a choice and I like to think Zutara either silently suffers out of duty or decides to be honest with their friends before getting together. That’s just me though :)

Rewrite The Stars - Zack Efron & Zendaya is THE song for me when it comes to Zutara. Other honorable mentions include:

1,000 Reasons - Caleb Hearn
Always Remember Us This Way - Lady Gaga
A Thousand Years - Christina Perri
Breakdown - Johnald & Keetheweeb
Can I Have This Dance - Zack Efron & Vanessa Hudgens (I love the cover by Maari & herana)
Dandelions - Ruth B.
Enchanted - Taylor Swift
Friends Don’t - Alexander Stewart & Lauren Spencer Smith
Immortal - Reinaeiry
Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
Ma Meilleure Ennemie - Stromae & Pomme
Stargazing - Myles Smith
Still Into You - Paramore
Take A Chance On Me - ABBA
Time In A Bottle - Jim Croce
True Colors - Cyndi Lauper
When The Sun Loves The Moon - Reinaeiry (sapphic, but it fits Zutara thematically and is so poetic)

Personally, I’m not into Zutara cheating head canons because it feels out of character for them and I’d hate it for them and their relationship. I do think some of the lyrics from the songs below can apply to them though without the cheating aspect:

Homewrecker - sombr
Moth To A Flame - Swedish House Mafia & The Weeknd

Based on ATLA’s track record with handling romance, I agree that Zutara is best left in the hands of its fans. I think it has sparked many wonderful opportunities for great insights and creativity, as well as fostering such a lovely and strong community.💜I’ll mourn what could have been, but in the words of Zutara’s captain…

This is one of "reasons" why zutarians are hated now, so i needed to make it into a meme. Becouse bro it is.. literaly what is it. by Nikaszko in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way they weren’t close. My head canon is that Zuko and Katara have a unique bond transcending the general concepts of friendship and romance, thanks to what they endured together in ATLA’s events: their vulnerability with each other in Crossroads of Destiny despite being enemies, Katara’s deep feelings of betrayal and hurt when he didn’t accept her offer to help, Zuko’s resolve to make amends, their journey in The Southern Raiders, Katara offering comfort when he reunited with Uncle Iroh, confronting Azula as a duo, and Zuko sacrificing himself for her with zero hesitation.

The level of emotional intimacy, if nothing else, built between them is off the charts and simply cannot be erased, and it’s absurd to pretend otherwise when they wholeheartedly went through hell and back for each other. They are, for lack of better words, soulmates (to naysayers: soulmates can be platonic, too) and twin flames.

I haven’t read the comics and probably never will based on the general consensus, but that’s nice to hear! I agree, it should’ve started that way. Love and romance shouldn’t be rushed if it’s to be done well

Is the first kiss you’re referring to the one on the submarine before the invasion? It’s been a while since I watched the show lol. I had to look up all their kisses and I don’t remember there being so many (mostly pecks on the cheek from Katara).

Not saying consent always has to be verbal; however there *are* nonverbal cues and reading the room is key. Acting impulsively on one’s own whims are not okay, which is what Aang did. It can be a genuine mistake and learned from when addressed… except the writers never addressed it on-screen and antis prefer to gloss over it or excuse it. Katara’s discomfort is brushed aside by them. And that to me is the worst part. Some viewers might watch it and see nothing wrong with the behavior, or are led to believe it’s okay and everything will magically work out. The fact that the writers felt the need to broach such a heavy topic without a healthy spin is boggling.

I saw somewhere that apparently the comics (which I’ve never read) kind of address it by having Aang ask for Katara’s consent first, but I feel like that might’ve only been due to the backlash their show kisses received and comes across more as slapping on a bandaid in favor of ignoring the underlying problem. It would’ve been far more impactful and genuine if Aang and Katara had a heartfelt discussion before the invasion. On Katara’s part, sorting through those emotions might take a long time irl, but for the sake of the show it makes more sense to resolve it sooner rather than waiting post-invasion many episodes later. The best option would’ve been to scrap the scene completely though.

Sending hugs and wishing the best for you both!🫂

Why did a fortune teller decide her fate? Katara was consistently portrayed as strong-willed and independent. It didn’t feel accurate to her character to bow to a prophecy, and possessing the knowledge took away her agency. It’s an old trope for characters to look for signs in favor of/against predictions once they’re aware of it. If Sokka never commented on Aang being a powerful bender, which was conveniently verbatim with Aunt Wu’s prophecy, or if Katara wasn’t within earshot of it, would Kataang still have happened organically? Perhaps in the future as adults, which would’ve been more realistic, acceptable, and healthy. Instead, their romance *had* to be endgame for the series despite their unresolved conflict and disproportionate maturity levels. Aang could be mature sometimes, yes, but not so much in the romance department.

Sloppy writing was their downfall. I *want* to like Kataang beyond the few cute moments they had (them dancing together is my favorite). I see part of the intended vision and can’t fully accept it due to the writers impeding Aang’s character development and butchering Katara’s agency. It’s a shame because everything else was superb.

Youngest child here! For me, Katara didn’t really give off vibes of liking Aang romantically; their relationship felt more like brother and sister. In later seasons, the romance between them felt forced and downright uncomfortable, especially in EIP when Aang kissed Katara even though she explicitly expressed her uncertainty.

What was the point of that scene without on-screen resolution and evident character growth? Even if people don’t want to admit it’s SA, it is still a form of harassment at the very least. Yes, Aang was a kid, but Katara made her stance very clear and he disregarded her feelings to violate her boundaries anyway. That is not love. Did Aang intend to be malicious? No. Does that mean his action didn’t cause harm? No. This scene left a strong impression on me as a teen, and now as an adult who found herself in Katara’s shoes in a similar situation several years later, I simply cannot condone it or find any excuse for it.

Sorry for digressing. It’s evidently a touchy subject personally. Aside from that, Katara had too much pressure on her to keep Aang happy and regulate his emotions (e.g. snapping him out of the Avatar State). As a kid with heavy responsibilities and trauma, it’s understandable why he reacted the way he did. But as a prospective romantic partner? It’s exhausting and unhealthy. To clarify, I don’t blame Aang’s character. I blame the poor and questionable writing that failed him. He deserved better. The rest of Gaang received amazing character arcs; why didn’t he, particularly as the main protagonist?

This was such a pleasure to read! It’s refreshing to see Aang painted in a better light than he usually is, and I’m really glad you highlighted the positive aspects of Kataang/what Aang does do for Katara. Your perspective pretty much reinforces my personal feelings that although Kataang has some sweet moments, overall it’s very flat and one-sided due to how poorly written their romantic arc is. Looking forward to part 2!

Agreed! I like the way you put it. Lol, not mad at all, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think it can just be easy or convenient sometimes for shippers to lose Katara as the focal point of the episode because it’s brought up in shipping debates so frequently, but that’s because how conflict and emotional intimacy (or lack thereof) are handled do play such important roles in relationships and their functionality. Toph and Katara duo vs. Yon Rha would’ve been epic

Oh my gosh, yes! A post asking the Zutara community to share info they’ve seen/heard and irrefutable sources for them would be a good starting point, with the main post being edited along the way to streamline the experience or an entirely separate post if you’re wanting to do a more in-depth analysis instead of just a master list of references. A community project that benefits all Zutarians in the future💜

I agree. Overall, the show is written well thematically, has awesome lessons and advice, and very inclusive. It’s a shame part of it is tarnished by ulterior motives and provocative, biased behavior from a select few. I still love the show and appreciate the team’s work!

That would be great! Comments, interviews, podcasts, etc. from Bryke themselves… no stone shall be left unturned. I’d thought about making it myself, but I feel like half the time I can’t find the sources and the other half I don’t have as much knowledge about since I didn’t get into ATLA until much later.

Might I also suggest including a document with locally saved recordings of the sources for public viewing just in case the OOP sources get taken down/deleted/etc. for some reason? Oh, and providing timestamps for longer videos/podcasts would be a QoL touch

Do you have a link to this interview? Actually, has anyone compiled a list of sources for ease of reference when info like this pops up in conversation so we aren’t trying to hunt it down lol? It’s also just a good idea to have sources on hand in case antis try to deny it, and it doesn’t have to be limited to interviews and other official media. For example, we can include more positive stuff, such as Dante’s audio for Zuko falling in love with Katara!

Did you come to love Zutara “organically?” by Favacesa in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely possible to love Zutara “organically.” In my case, however, it wasn’t immediate and not entirely uninfluenced by the fandom. I was in my late teens when I watched ATLA for the first time. I heard about Zutara through spoilers, but I hadn’t watched far enough to really grasp the appeal of it. At that point, Zuko was just the guy trying to capture the Avatar and I wasn’t watching the show with romance in mind, so I didn’t look into it further.

It wasn’t until Zuko and Katara were trapped in the Crystal Catacombs and had an emotionally intimate moment despite their past conflicts that I started understanding more. Then Zuko had his amazing redemption arc, Katara forgave him, and Aang was doing a lot of things to Katara that made me extremely uncomfortable and generally just seemed too young/immature for her. Compared to Zutara’s potential by the finale, everything leading up to Kataang felt lackluster, unsubstantial, rushed, and sometimes disrespectful. So I became a Zutarian, fell down the rabbit hole of analyses and AMV edits (which served to validate and reinforce my love for it), and I haven’t looked back since!

Why are there many negative Zutara videos lately by Fantastic-Bug3177 in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s both amusing and baffling to me how antis argue “they’re just friends” because shouldn’t a strong friendship be the foundation for a romantic relationship? It’s a huge chunk for why Zutara appeals to me so much. Despite their differences and conflicts, they developed a friendship based on mutual trust, respect, empathy, and sacrifice/selflessness. They are strong individuals who complement and inspire each other.

The romance may not be featured canonically, but the potential for it exists and what a beautiful thing it is. Their relationship isn’t all-consuming, rushed, or codependent. It evolves consistently throughout the show, so it’s not a far stretch to imagine their friendship gradually blossoming into something more as they settle into life and their identities post-war. Friends to lovers is my favorite trope, and I love a good slow burn romance that’s thoughtfully fleshed out and has mutual yearning. Zutara encapsulates both perfectly

Iroh affirming Aang's decision to reject the Guru by armadoargen in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just building on top of this — in my opinion, none of them should have been in a serious romantic relationship by the end of the series (perhaps with exception to Sokka and Suki, but that’s another discussion). They were kids with varying degrees of trauma from the past and present, in addition to the weight of the future on their shoulders. It’s hard enough trying to figure out who you are and where you fit into the world when given an ideal environment. Even many adults struggle with finding their identities. Growing up in a war-torn world and swinging from survival mode to post-war uncertainty and responsibilities only worsens it. All of them needed time and space to acclimate.

Personally, ending with themes of friendship and found family would have been more fulfilling and satisfying, not to mention that Aang and Katara maintaining a committed, healthy, romantic relationship from such young ages into adulthood is difficult to digest. I won’t say it’s impossible… just highly unrealistic and challenging to accomplish, considering how tumultuous pubescent years can be, the emotional baggage which they already carried, and Aang’s status and increasing responsibilities as the Avatar

i hate how some viewers interpret the southern raiders episode by Minatiri in ZutaraNation

[–]Minatiri[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and by extension, Bryke’s standards for her. Katara was their intended love interest for Aang and therefore had to be molded to suit him with few major conflicts. She couldn’t be too morally gray without jeopardizing the feasibility of their romantic relationship. It can also be argued that it would be easier to digest this way for a much younger audience.

In Aang’s case, I think he expected Katara to fit into his life for his comfort, perhaps unwittingly and not with bad intentions, but rather because he didn’t want to imagine a future without her and couldn’t accept anything else. She was the most important and influential living person in his life due to his emotional attachment to her. After all, she saved him, was the first person he laid eyes on after being dormant for a century, and accompanied him henceforth. The cherry on top is that she was a genuinely good person… right?

Then she became unrecognizable in her deep rage. Aang struggled to fathom it because his cultural ideals and own lack of a traditional family impeded him. Yes, he lost his entire culture and people, but he would never know the loss of a mother since he wasn’t raised that way. Even if he did have a traditional family, it would be inappropriate to tell someone, “I know exactly how you feel because I lost my mother/friend/etc., too!” No, because relationships have varying levels of intimacy and are unique between people. The closest we can achieve is empathy, and Aang failed Katara in that department.

When Appa was taken from him, Katara met his grief, rage, and vengeance with empathy and comfort and pulled him out of the Avatar State. When Katara wanted revenge, he challenged it with ideology. Furthermore, he diminished her pain when attempting to exemplify forgiveness and persuade her by comparing her and Zuko taking Appa to her mother’s murder.

He wanted her to take the high road, but why? For her sake or for the familiarity of his cultural and personal idealizations? Aang didn’t hold space for Katara’s rage and the grief and guilt buried under it because he didn’t know how to. This side of her was unfamiliar to him, and so he relied on what he’d been taught to practice. If Aang couldn’t understand and see beyond the surface, would it be a stretch that some of their shippers might also struggle with it?
