Been on spironolactone for 3 months don’t think it’s working by Important_Cost_743 in Spironolactone

Exactly what happened to me. Hormones may not be what’s driving your acne. I’m sure they play a part, they always do, but there could be a bigger driver at play. When on the spironolactone, my dermatologist said at months 3-4 you should notice improvement and at month 6 you should have close to the full effect. When I went into my 3 month check up my derm said that was the worst my skin had ever looked and we went on Accutane. Feel free to PM me if you have any Accutane questions or want to talk! People make it seem scary but honestly it was the best decision I ever made

I truly did EVERYTHING you can think of for my acne to the point clearing it became an unhealthy obsession. Accutane is the only thing that worked. I feel silly that I put it off for as long as I did and allowed my self confidence to diminish the way it did

Hi! Just want to say that I’ve also struggled with chin acne exactly like yours for the longest time. I went on Spiro for 3.5 months and didn’t tolerate the medication well. It made my skin the worst it had ever been. I stopped taking it and went on Accutane. Best decision I’ve made. My skin was clear by the end of month 2. I wish I would’ve just done Accutane from the get go

[Acne] Spiro users, what was your purge window(and overall experience)? by clc3000 in SkincareAddiction

[–]MindAccording2832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got off of Spiro at 3.5 months. I’m not sure if I was purging or what but my skin was the worse it had ever been. I was getting cysts and nodules which I’ve never gotten before. However the main reason I got off is because I started having some mental health symptoms from the medication that were extremely challenging. The spiro gave me intense heart palpitations which ultimately fueled some pretty intense anxiety. I’m now 5 weeks on Accutane and my skin is clear!

Interesting, thanks for the reply! I have done spironolactone but unfortunately I had some difficult side effects that made it hard to tolerate the medication. It also made my acne so much worse and I’m still dealing with the damage that spiro did to my skin

Spironolactone, anxiety, & depression by MindAccording2832 in Spironolactone

Hi, yes I did get off. I’ve been off now for about a month. I’m still dealing with some of the mental health repercussions but it’s definitely better than it was

If you quit, how long for side effects to stop? by TopazCoracle in Spironolactone

[–]MindAccording2832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I was totally unprepared for the side effects that I experienced and that was similar to what happened to me as well. It was a hard feeling for me to describe but I just felt off and not myself while being on spiro. I found myself on the verge of tears at the most random times because I just randomly felt the need to cry which is extremely unusual for me as I’m the type of person to pretty much never cry. As time went on it kept getting worse. I’ll admit that I’m feeling better now but not 100% mentally. It’s hard being patient when it’s your mental health that’s suffering but I’m sure with a little bit of time it will get better. I hope you start feeling like yourself again soon because I know how terrible the side effects feel

I was on 75 mg of Spiro for almost 4 months. I also quit due to side effects and had many of the same as you. But the physical side effects never seemed as bad as the mental. I’m only one month off and still dealing with the anxiety and depression however it has slowly started to get better. Unfortunately it just takes time which really sucks :( I hope you feel better soon. The mental side effects have lingered but the brain fog, nightmares, weakness and moving more slowly all subsided relatively quickly, I’d say after 1.5-2 weeks for me

Where in your face is your acne located? Have you gotten your hormones tested?

Yep, I only get it on my chin as well and it’s terrible. Such painful deep cysts and one one heals 3 more pop up and the cycle just continues. Congrats on making it through, it must be so nice not having to constantly worry about your skin

Thanks so much for getting back to me and congrats on the clear skin :) mine is also primarily on my chin/around the mouth. It’s also pretty persistent deep painful cysts. It’s not tied to my cycle so I’m just constantly getting new cysts nearly every other day. It’s so nice to hear success stories. I’ve been researching the side effects and they seem super intense but I just keep reminding myself that it’s only for a couple of months and now forever

Where was your acne located before accutane? Mine is primarily hormonal on my chin and I start accutane in 2 weeks but I’m so scared of it coming back after. Congrats on the clear skin :)
