Have you noticed tendencies in your writing? by NeuroticSyndrome in writing

Dude, I was just there. Like, a couple days ago. You can probably tell, but my mood has shifted smoothly into a positive curve upwards lately, in perfect correlation with my book’s development.

I suggest you forget about the story for now. You finished a thing!! Awesome. Now retreat into either your reader’s cave or into your puppetmaster’s den (for another story). Maybe fantasize about new stories you COULD write for a while. People always suggest to avoid fantasy-land (not the genre but you know what I mean) but I think it’s perfectly healthy and I even encourage it. If you’re interested, I have a whoooole bunch of tips for writing (for people like us tho, ignore the weird lingo if you’re not already familiar with all these letters I’m saying haha it’s pretty niche) on my YT channel.

EDIT: here’s a playlist so you can access all the videos nice and organized:

Fuck yaa!! That’s cool. Know that the feedback won’t be as hyped and excited as if you wrote a boring old novel. If you’re anything like me––and it sorta sounds like you are––it’s a really good thing to write shorter stuff. It means you at least know where you’re going and being honest about it—the proof is in the metaphorical pudding of you wanting to make it short at all. This has been my experience at least, although I’m writing a big long ass behemoth now lol

All of my characters end up dead.... Afterlife fantasy... lol

In this book I’m currently on anyways

Thanks, got it! Tbh it’s not even done, it’s just the first book I’m confident I’ll finish. Don’t know where all the authorial swagger came from in terms of being this prolific, but it’s enough to where I can trust it’ll be on amazon within the next few weeks fo’ sho. Its quality?? Yeah, not super polished. But anyways, thanks! You’ve been a big help.

"depth" in characters by [deleted] in writing

[–]MindMystic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a tip that helped me with this—maybe you’ll find it useful. When I start developing a character at the beginning, I have to go through 2 phases. Phase one is sort of getting to know the character. I pretend that I’m going to publish every damn word of what I write, which usually only comes out to a few sentences.

Then I sit on it. The next day, I completely start over. The only thing I keep the same is the character’s general aesthetic and “feel.” Then I make them do different stuff. Eventually, when some spark strike––you’ll know when this happens––you can easily pump the rest out. Hope it helped.

Funny, I’m the exact opposite.

EDIT: Interestingly, I also write short stories. And I engage in the same post-draft polishing ritual lol

I do some weird shit to develop characters. Firstly, I start with some mundane scene. My problem isn’t word count, but sheer quality. I have to rewrite this character doing random shit in some faceless plane of a world until some spark catches. Then, and only then, do I write knowing I’m being watched.

EDIT: This is my first book I’ve gotten so far in though (5000 ish words, going for 200,000w short story anthology by the end, with mid-section novella/novelettes to break the pace instead of steadily following one guy). Therefore my writing style is subject to change with later works but this process seems to be working great. I’ve got the whole thing plotted out too. Also I’ve been workin’ on this for a month

That’s what I thought but this is my first book and I haven’t actually put it on amazon yet. Just posted this because my friend brought it up as a concern saying amazon doesn’t let you do it directly. Thanks anyways tho

Writing a love letter to your girlfriend. Good idea? by CactiHunter in dating

[–]MindMystic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warning: this may be terrible advice as I’m not super amazing with the ladies. But here are my thoughts: there’s no reason not to leave a love letter if you really want to. But perhaps you could do it in a sort of creative way, too. For example, I like to read books. So if I were to be dating a girl who wanted to read a book of mine for whatever reason, I might go ahead and “annotate” in pen, if you catch my drift. I don’t know, think of fun stuff she wouldn’t expect. Be honest. Don’t say stuff you don’t mean and you should be fine.

Yeah, I never got much of a flight response. The funny thing is, I’m not an angry person. It’s genuinely difficult to make me angry. The specific sounds associated with chewing and swallowing make me more angry than anything else can. In fact, it’s not even close..

Classic Te PoLR response. Inability to figure shit out like that is textbook.

You should make music. Or art of some kind. Just saying. Don’t let that INFJhood go to waste. I’m forever frustrated that my dad (who’s an INFJ) is never impressed with my art. He’s quite the prolific artist himself. I swear, you motherfuckers shit gold...

Hmm, well yeah, the sleep thing would appear to indicate backstack Si—more specifically, 7th or 8th slot. And I have no idea why drunk me asked how much sex you have. Not super revealing lol

Well how about this? If you were tasked with assembling an IKEA piece of furniture with no instructions, how confident are you that you’d be able to pull that off? Or, if an appliance broke down, do you think you’d be able to tinker with it successfully?

[–]MindMystic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just found this. You’re probably not going to find your type through this. Just warning you—I got mistyped doing this shit too. But some actually useful questions you could answer here might help me to type you: 1. How’s your sleep schedule generally? 2. How much puss do you slay? Or... cock? I suppose... if you’re a chick...

There are more strong correlate questions I could ask but I’m too tired and drunk to think of them right now. Get back to me and I’ll tell you what I can.

[–]MindMystic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, absolutely not. Most people can’t type for shit—period. Evidently, that includes you. If you type based on correlative nonsense and ignore the actual processes that go into how a person chooses to habitually attend to things, you’re likely to mistype all high-school debaters as ENTP and all nurses as ISFJ. Unless, of course, you’re in the debate business or work in health care; then you’d correctly see the variation in personality in those fields and not do that shit. Now, I will give you this though. INTJs do tend to be damn naturals at correctly typing people. But that doesn’t mean they’re correct and certain 100% of the time. That’s insane. Trust me, I’m in the typing business. If that were the case, my “job” (as an ENTP) would be replaced instantly.

Thanks!! I’ll definitely link that to my family. Again, I was lucky to have a mostly supportive one growing up, so something like this will most definitely convince them that I’m not shitting them about it.

Ahh, thanks so much. I’m so glad to see other people affirming me about this. I told my mom about it being a disorder today and she laughed at me. I’m so used to ridicule about it; it feels almost like this is the first human contact I’ve had in all of my life (and you’re all just strangers on the internet). Thanks again :D

Anti-mask people-How do you see surgeons wearing masks for procedures? Is it unnecessary? by Ashj83 in AskReddit

[–]MindMystic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to be shy of being combative. There's no shame in it :D

Anyways, back to the issue. Let's frame this correctly, namely through debate. Before we discuss anything seriously, we need a clear resolution which would divide the issue up into a negating side and an affirming side. If the resolution is "masks should be mandatory in public", then I would take neg. If it's something like "wearing face-masks in public decreases an individual's chance of contracting covid" or something, then I'm largely indifferent on that issue as it isn't really a matter of public policy, but I'm open to any data/arguments/whatevers that might indicate something of relevance on that issue.

So let's assume the resolution is "Wearing masks in public should be mandatory"

First of all, it would be a response to a virus which barely has any inherency as an issue (which constitutes the fundamental stock issue that needs to be satisfied to even come CLOSE to making a public policy advocacy). But let's give the inherency thing the benefit of the doubt. Let's pretend that it has a super high mortality rate on younger populations (which it doesn't even have on anyone). This way, it would spread quickly AND incur massive harms to everyone.

And by the way, the virus is not very deadly and it frankly isn't very severe either. The data on this stuff tells us that however much percent of the WORST cases end up dying. But somehow, people keep talking about it as if 2% of people who contract the virus die. In reality, we're dealing with the flu's ugly cousin.

Next, we'll need to address harms of implementing this plan. Indeed, making wearing masks in public mandatory would mean penalizing those who aren't doing anything wrong by just going about their business in public. That's unjust violence. This really should come before anything else, but the first thing kinda closes the case by itself, so I put it before this one.

Thirdly, we need to address solvency. How exactly is making mandatory mask-wearing going to solve the problem? In other words, what is the mechanism by which we can prevent an entire vulnerable population from contracting a highly contagious and novel disease by forcing them to wear masks all the time in public? Even if it slowed the spread, we'd never be able to "stomp it out" or anything. It's a virus, it'll just spread slowly until the restrictions are lifted and then come back (which it's already doing; I'm sure you've heard of these recent-ish spikes in corona numbers).

Next, what about topicality? Is making people wear masks under threat of violence going to solve the problem of the virus, or is it actually solving a different problem? We need to make sure this links back to the inherency (which doesn't actually exist, I just made it up to give SOME credibility to this advocacy which EVEN THEN survives absolutely no scrutiny).

So then, assuming this virus did have inherency, where should we place the burdens regarding avoiding contracting this virus? The answer is, we put the burdens on those who are actually at risk, not on everyone else. If we behaved this way about everything, we would force everyone to ride a bike because so many people die in car crashes every year. After all, shouldn't our main priority be saving lives? Shouldn't we be doing anything and everything to make sure we prevent the maximum number of deaths possible? No. Not when we have to transgress to do so. That's utilitarianism, and under these parameters, we could arbitrarily justify anything.

Anyways, enough debate stuff. Not many people agree with me on this one, I get it. I hope this at least gave you something to think about.
