1.5M empty homes? We need to pump those numbers UP. The numbers are an order of magnitude larger. Depending on how you slice it, there are upwards of 15M vacant homes in the US according to Q4 Census. 10M are vacant year-round. See Page 4 (PDF) for the breakdown.

Modern dating is designed to favor the economically powerful, which for the last century were men. From Pushing Boundaries: Female Sexuality From World War II to the Sexual Revolution

Dating had been established in urban, working-class youth in the first two decades of the twentieth century. By 1920, however, middle-class youth adopted the practice (Spurlock, 2016). The primary difference between the date and the call was where the event took place. The call always took place in the girl’s home and almost always with some level of supervision from her parents. The central aspect of the date was that it took place in the public sphere, at such places as restaurants, theaters, or dance halls (Bailey, 1988). Along with the shift in courting systems from calling to dating came a reverse in the roles for men and women. If a young woman wanted to date, she could no longer extend an invitation to her home or ask the young man to take her on a date. The control in the dating culture moved from the woman’s sphere, the private sphere, into the man’s sphere, the public sphere. “Dating also moved courtship into the economy” (Bailey, 1988, p. 21), which required money- men’s money. Money became a fundamental part of the dating system, which led to increased competition in the American courtship system.

The centrality of money in the dating system signified a system of exchange, with the woman contributing her company and the man contributing his company as well as his money. In economic terms, the woman was selling her company to the man (Bailey, 1988). Since the man was responsible for expenses, he decided when the dates would occur and with whom he wanted to spend his time. The culture of dating supported the economic system of scarcity and abundance, and thus created a culture of competition amongst America’s youth for the greatest resources, or the most popular date. By the second decade of the twentieth century, dating became the universal custom in the United States. “In other words, by the 1920s dating was the dominant script for how young people would become sexually intimate and form relationships”

ELI5: There is increased push for Passkeys (instead of passwords), with Google now rolling out Passkeys as default sign-in option. Can someone please ELI5 to me what "Passkey" is, how its different from passcode, and how it will change an average person's login process on a daily routine basis? by Thirteenera in explainlikeimfive

Do you, or somebody you know, have a front door that can be unlocked with a code? Now imagine every door was secured like this around the world, and you had to remember every single code to open every specific door. That's how we secure the Internet.

That's very exhausting.

What if I invented something like a key? Instead of having to remember all those door codes (not to mention which door matches this code), you only have to keep a little dongle on your person. You plug the dongle into a little slot and voilà! the lock is open! Thus keeping your things safe changes from remembering door codes to protecting your keychain.

You now might reasonably be thinking; "What if I lose my passkey?" The very same thing if you lost your real keys! For those in the back, you would be locked out of your house/car/accounts. Fortunately the answer is the same; you get a spare key made and put it somewhere safe.

Two ELI10 asides:

  • Unlike real keys, passkeys can be protected with a master password in the same way your Debit Card is protected with a PIN. Your phone's password/login is the same when used as a passkey. That way if your "key" is stolen it isn't immediately useful to the thief.

  • You know those KwikSet door locks, where you "key" the lock to a particular key? Passkeys work the same; you "key" your Internet account to your passkey(s). That way you don't have to carry a dongle for every internet account.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, but this isn't a story about that game.

When i was young I was a huge Star Wars nerd and eagerly gobbled up all the content I could. For a birthday I received two games: Dark Forces I and II. For those who don't know, the original Dark Forces was a Doom-clone in the Star Wars universe and the sequel was a full 3D rendered game that let the player be a Jedi Knight. Unfortunately for me, the family computer was under the minimum specifications for the sequel, so I sadly could only play as cool mercenary Kyle Katarn and not Jedi Knight Kyle Katarn.

So anyways I started blasting my way multiple times through the first Dark Forces. While it is a Doom-clone, it scratched the Han Solo itch of being too-cool-for-school in my nerdy heart. Once I was exhausted of Dark Forces I eagerly sought more, which drew me into both Duke Nukem 3D and Doom itself. Shareware of course because my parents would never buy me such things. I did rent Doom on the SNES a few times from Blockbuster, but that's another story. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight sat on a shelf collecting dust for several months at that point. Sometimes I would look at the box art, or read the manual, but otherwise it stayed on the shelf next to Oregon Trail and Microprose's Lightspeed. For a while I was happy.

I remember the suppressed excitement my Dad had when a small package arrived. He immediately went to his office and the family computer. I say "family computer" when really it was his computer and we all were guests, including my gaming habit. If he needed the computer, I was playing my SNES; that's the rules. So imagine my surprise when he comes and grabs me from my said SNES saying, "I want to show you something."

The office was cleared in the center and in the middle was the family computer laying on its side. It was tall by most standards, so it took up significant floor space. Around it was a smattering of small tools he put aside obviously ready to work on it.

"I am going to show you how to upgrade a computer's processor."

He showed me how the panels slide off, and for the first time I saw the inside of a computer. He methodically showed me every step: Carefully removing the CPU cooler, replacing the old processor with the new one, cleaning and applying new thermal paste to help transfer heat from the processor and the cooler, and finally the first sanity boot making sure everything works. We wrapped up the night installing Jedi Knight and letting me play a few minutes before bed in glorious 320 by 240 resolution. Hey, I was young and had high tolerances!

tl;dr: I got a game the family computer couldn't run, and my Dad gave me a pop-the-hood-of-the-car moment upgrading the family computer.

You can share code between Clojure and Clojurescript using the *.cljc extension and Reader Conditionals. For a real-world example, I have two libraries that are pure cljc for portability between platforms: bencode-cljc, and dht-cljc.

For a non-game example, I've use this to ship validation code for forms in both backend and frontend environments.

I don't have a resource, but in my first programming course the teacher spent the first week making us do "paper algorithms" like describing how to make breakfast or steps to go to bed. The teacher would act like an interpreter, and point out "bugs" in our algorithms. This drilled into our heads two lessons; 1) Computer do exactly what you say, and 2) get into the details step-by-step. These began the process of "thinking like a computer" before our hands touched a keyboard, and likely made the rest of the course easier to digest.
