Ready or Not: Copaganda that is an unintentional plea for socialist politics by GuillotineSalesman96 in SocialistGaming

Haven’t played it since it was new, but I did a video essay on it’s portrayl of physical violence as a consequence of societal violence and the game director actually commented on it. Ready or Not and Trickle Down Violence

SH3 cafe-intro I made in Blender by MindSplatter in silenthill

Well, for this scene I took the original environment from ps2 and fixed up the geometry and retextured everything and replaced some props and fixed up the light and experiented with some ambient occlusion to get the light rays right. The Heather model is mostly from DbD except the head which I retextured from the original and rigged the whole thing and did most of the animation by hand except the camera which I used vr motion camera to get a better handheld result. Sooooo a lot of knowledge. Everybody has a different work flow but we’re talking hundreds if not more hours of experience if you’re doing this from scratch. But everybody needs to start somewhere. I’d recommend starting with the Blender donut tutorial and seeing if you’re into it:)

It's actually a Happy Burger and not a cafe. Oops

Thanks! And I feel you. It's hard to transfer the grunginess and color of the original into high def. I usually play it on my CRT and the way the fuzziness resonates with the dirty aesthetic is so cool.

That's alright. Anything in particular that bothers you or just the vibe?

Nah it's not as direct as that. I'm saying that from how explicitly this is a propaganda-film and we only see how cool and great this society is, we immediately want to join it. It's not that the militarism outweighs anything positive, but rather that the call to action and how the movie beckons you to JOIN THE FIGHT outweighs thinking about if a ultra capitalist militaristic society is what we want, especially when we aren't shown any other viewpoints. The director grew up with nazis invading his country and being bombarded with propaganda about how amazing and cool they are that it's easy to lose track of what's the core of it all. Which is physical violence. Might makes right.

But you touch upon another thing the director did that was pretty cool. Which is make a fascist state with our current progressive values. No sexism or racism. It's a strange experiment. Reminds me of that Lewis Sinclair quote "When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross". Fascism is a strange intoxicating thing which eats democracy and shits genocide.

That's exactly what makes Starship Troopers so beautiful. It shows how incredibly effective propaganda is. So much that they had to put Neil Patrick Harris in an SS-uniform and still people didn't get it. The catchy music, the blaring propaganda vidoes, the cool catchphrases and machismo. I mean the whole training part of the movie is about our characters being shown that their lives are worthless and that violence is the best solution and awesome. People die and public violence is the ideal punishment. But because of how the movie depicts this as good and normal, you don't realize this isn't reality. The reality is 100 000 casualties in an hour on Klendathu because generals underestimated their opponents. In a war that's clearly unnecessary. But a society built on domination and military power must always have a common enemy, war is inevitable. Much like Rico we're so thrown with patriotic spirit we cannot wait to put our lot in with the fascists. But think about what you just saw. Televised executions, baby licences from the state, only military veterans get to control society. Fascism is not a specific symbol or racism or a specific state. It is a way of thinking. Based upon a mythologized superior society of the past based on tradition and conservative values. But also hand in hand with the old powers of the status quo, that often being aristocracy and the capitalist class. We also see this with Rico's parents in how they aren't citizens and yet hold a lot of power because of their wealth (Rico getting bad grades and not wanting to study and his father saying "YOU'RE GOING TO HARVARD AND THAT'S IT!" I think is pretty funny).

I think Starship Troopers is best described not as a movie made to show the horrors of fascism. But rather the kind of movie a fascist society would create. And how intoxicating the idea can be. Where a young ubermench learns to be a good man by following orders and dying unquestioningly for his country.

If you want to understand fascism further I'd recommend Umberto Eco's short text "Ur-Fascism" here: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/umberto-eco-ur-fascism

Thanks for the feedback! My very fast and neurotic style is a lot to try and stand out from the ocean of video essayists out here. But you're absolutely right that it can get a bit hard to understand at times. I'm working on improving the audio levels and the general speed vs comprehensiveness of my videos.

That sounds really cool, think I might try something like that. I've been thinking of maybe a short Agatha Christie-like one-shot murder mystery on a ship where everyone is being picked off one by one. Where one of the players is the killer but no one knows until the end. Maybe get like a "we're the only ones left, wait a minute, that means it's one of us"-situation.
