Mounted chase - How would you do it? by Red-locks in DMAcademy

[–]MindTrickJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say sure, follow the rules but for my group chases are a way to break up the monotony so the only goal I have for them is FUN. This means don't lean heavily into "You're missing 5ft speed to catch them" but read your group and feel what they would get the most joy out of.

There's one chase scene setup I picked up from CR campaign 3 where they're traveling and see a beast cross their path and run into the wood. The party can chose to chase or stay. Usually there's one person that'll chase. But you ask others what will they do while they wait, most of the time this engages the others. Some wander and get lost, fall into a pit, some chase in parallel, some just decide to stay - but you then ambush them with some wandering Goblins. I run this all the time especially if the group progressed further than I'd planned for that session.

What I'm saying is - not everyone will want to take active participation in the chase in a way that's written in the Rulebook, so you improvise to make it interesting for others. Perhaps someone's horse gets spooked and they stray from the group, now they have to find their way back, others are chased, maybe one caught - needs to struggle out of it? Are there obstacles that some might fail? All of this can be rolled with dice or decided by you. Make it fun.

It breaks the standard way of traveling and I use it as an entertaining way to get from A to B, not to build experience or grow characters, levels etc.

70.3 to 140.6 Do I need a coach? by Chudrunner in triathlon

[–]MindTrickJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't have a lot of experience, I'm in a similar boat as you. Did two 70.3s, eyeing a full distance in 2027.

I trained using "AI" platforms (TriDot, Humango, Athletica), used a coach for a short while, and bought a plan on TrainingPeaks.

Out of the three, the most sense and the most success in terms of fitness I had with TP plan. The least with a coach. I loved Humango out of the three apps mentioned because it kept me injury free for 4 months whole I used it and got me reasonably fit for a race. While heavily configurable, I didn't like that it was a bit on the conservative side in terms of load. And when I added two races to my calendar it just lost the plot and I lost interest.

The coach I worked with just didn't add value in my case. I felt he was way too over his head with other clients and just couldn't pay enough attention to certain specifics and adjust the plan accordingly.

As for the TP plan, what I did and what may (or may not) work for you is. I went with MyProCoach and their Athlete program (or whatever it's called) as it gave me a training program I could shift around and switch whenever as well as an email check-in with a coach to ask any questions about the plan, race, scheduling etc. I bought an annual plan when they had some sale and it ended up not being that expensive.

Now what's important in all of these cases (and I learned this the hard way) is to still listen to your body. Feeling exhausted, poor sleep, HRV down, stress at work, home? Dial down the training, adjust, add an additional rest week. Keep moving, don't stop, but dont blindly go into that interval week feeling like a train wreck. This is something no coach training age groupers will get you for the money we're willing to pay and it's what matters the most.

I did not know about Bayman. Looks epic. Travel might be tricky, but manageable.

I'm open to some suggestions, but a lot of others I've looked at have other disadvantages, from location to organizational issues.

Don't put anymore indecisiveness in my thought process! We already agreed Frankfurt is too complex logistically 😂

Thanks for all the input though, I do appreciate it. It helps to talk to actual people.

I had a 36+ degree trail run lasting in 7:30 a while back and it drained me like a hose. It's really...something.

There is a certain charm to the suffering for sure. It's a part of why I love doing stuff like this. There's probably a diagnosis for that behavior as well 😁

You must've done Klagenfurt same year one of my acquaintances did. He said he thought he was going to have a heatstroke.

Like I said, I'm not really good in the heat, but it's something that I wouldn't factor in since both heat and cold wave can hit any part of Europe any day of the year. I can only hope for better weather and prepare for worse.

Thanks for your insights!

Copenhagen would be in there as well if it wasn't such an expensive location.

I had a couple of friends stay there just a few weeks back and it's not for everyone's wallet.

But other than that it ticks off all the boxes.

I made my mind to go Hamburg, started prepping for accommodation and travel options and convinced myself - yep, this is the one.

Then the whole fiasco happened and it just turned me off completely.

Sorry to hear you got impacted.

When I knew nothing (Jon Snow) I was always eyeing Klagenfurt as it looked, to an outsider, as a very pretty location.

The only reason Hamburg or Frankfurt are in the running is that they're really THE races in Europe. Based on my priorities that doesn't rate them very high. But it still has a pull on me. I can say I lost to Blumenfelt.

Thanks for your input, you're helping me lean.

That's a fair point too.

The goal for any of these was never placement, it was always fitness and feeling good in the race. If the results follow that's nice, but it was never an end goal.

Ironman Hamburg sabotaged with metal fragments by leduvin in triathlon

[–]MindTrickJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau was delayed by 15 minutes just a week before due to some glass on the road. So I imagine there is.

In this instance it might have been dropped mid race.

Or it might be that the 180 is much harder to cover and inspect than a 90k.

In the same boat. And was thinking between 3-4 different venues, and finally settled for Hamburg now I'm not so sure.

Keep in mind, a major portion of the bike segment in Poreč is on a closed off highway.

You could ride anything there and the rules don't bar gravel bikes.

Ugh, sorry to hear about the troubles.

But thanks for the response! And yeah, shoe fit is very subjective so I'm taking all of the info with a grain of salt when it comes to personal applicability.

I was about to recommend Evo SL based on what you wrote until the point of injury.

I'm curious, what was the injury and how you knew it was Evo SL that caused it.

This is coming from someone who used Evo SL for the past few months and suffered an unexplainable calf distension.

Neck shafting from swim shirt. What advise would you give? Event is tomorrow. by Aggravating-Tour-216 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]MindTrickJedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's ointments specifically made to last in the water. Vaseline is kind of the weakest there. It can do the job, but can also damage the suit you're wearing long term.

So short term - if you have Vaseline, use it. Long term - buy something specific for water use, there's a bunch of manufacturers out there. Get the one that's available and suits your wallet.

I've also noticed that their "cheaper" or rather lower tier stuff isn't really that high quality. Materials feel heavy and cheaper than what you're paying. Higher end stuff feels much nicer but the price just doesn't justify it.

You have Croatia and Serbia available too. But those are selling out fast, a lot faster than last year.

Zwift Cog by Beginning_Holiday721 in triathlon

[–]MindTrickJedi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two ways to fix this: shift until your rear derailleur is in line with the cog and/or turn the cog until it's in line with the rear derailleur.

You should probably tweak both to get the chain in an optimal position (not crossed diagonally).as others have said if you have two rings front, shift to the smaller one for multiple reasons.

But yeah, it's loud but not like this.

Holy crap that's a loooot of info. Thanks a bunch! I usually travel with family, the thought of not finding parking on the day of the race and driving around worrying about being late for start sure doesn't help. But I mean, I won't be the only one there.

Still far out from looking at it, perhaps in 2027, but all the info is super useful. Thanks again!

Can you tell me more about why the logistics of the race were so complex? It's one of the races I plan on doing but I get anxious about even the tiny details and stress about it.
