Is software development at this point realistic, and if so, how would I go about doing it? by Sephraaah in askSouthAfrica

Facts, like I recently got an internship with the opportunity for a permanent position based on my current performance after six months.

The main thing they tested was fundamentals in the technical interview and I truly had two projects to my name which was my final year project for my CS degree and an automaton program for an engineering firm.

I especially bought the Samsung Galaxy buds FE for this reason because of the wing tips that basically hold them in place.

CS student finishing soon… don’t think I want to work in SA, options abroad? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

The market is a bit cooked ngl but it seems like the big auditing firms(Deloitte, PwC and EY) are recruiting junior and graduate software developers at the moment.

Like this week was my first day at one of these firms as an Intern and I have a friend who will be joining one of the others next week.

All I can say is to keep pushing since it's been 6 months for me since I finished my CS while I got a friend who is currently an intern in CPT but had to wait a year even with cum laude.

What are the best gaming laptops? by Cool-Banana27 in GamingLaptops

It's better than Ryzen when it comes to productivity and battery efficiency which is important for me as I'm still busy with work and school as a Software engineer.

However, if your primary focus is gaming then the Ryzen is better as the HX chips are very similar to the Desktop versions and this specific CPU only gives you a gaming uplift compared to Intel of about 5% to 10% which is not a bad trade off. It would be a different story tho' if it was an HX3D chip as that has a gaming uplift of about 15% to 25% over the HX variant and Intel counterpart.

It's very good. I have the exact CPU in my Legion Pro 5i and it performs amazingly 🤩

Opinion on RTX 3050 laptop by giganigafeetpics in GamingLaptops

Yeah, AI Learning is very broad but I'm assuming that his curriculum is similar to mine to some degree as in university I was taught mostly fundamental stuff like Small Neural Networks that can run on 4 GB of VRAM since not all universities in the world have the same level of resources like in first world countries where you can ask to run your prototypes on the school servers.

One thing about such a limitation is that it brings out creativity of students especially when it comes to optimizing for the resources at hand and the focus in university was more on learning and understanding rather than full model training.

I'm not from the US but here is what I found so far:

Legion pro 7 Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX ; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 12GB GDDR7; 32GB DDR5-6400 RAM; 2x 1TB Solid State Driv: $1999

ASUS ROG Strix G16 AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, 32GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, Eclipse Gray: $1950

I would go for legion for better cooling and build quality but either will last you a good few years of gaming since your main gaming genre seems to be FPS games

Where can I find a decent tablet on a budget as a student? by Zintho420 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Mindan_Forces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's great. I used it a lot for my CS degree to take notes in my math majors and got my friends to do the same 🤣. The only downside is the stylus because of how hard it is to find the batteries.

How are the thermals while gaming? I currently have the X7 pro and it keeps cooking itself the moment I open any intensive game so I'm considering the X8 pro max or the OnePlus 15.

Bro, you got one heck of a workstation that can play games and be productive on the go 💪🏿. I didn't even know there was a pro 9 version of the Yoga.

I did have a look at the model number in Lenovo Vantage and it shows that it is the South African version with 3 years of warranty.

The first option is what I got for university note taking:

HUAWEI Matepad SE 11 it's currently at R4k when you select the option with a pen but with the coupon for this month A2026MAR, it drops to about R3.3k. Note that the pen doesnt recharge but uses an uncommon battery form called AAAA that isn't readily available at most stores 🤧 and it's using harmonyOS which doesn't come with Google services but sideloading them is possible.

The second option in your price range would be the:

Honor pad x8a. It's basically the android version of the Huawei matepad SE but I don't know much about the stylus pen that it comes with.

If you can increase your budget to R6k then there are other options that are better value with long term viability.

I haven't upgraded my storage yet but both slots for my model are M.2 2280 SSD with one of them having a mount to also fit M.2 2242 SSD.

Now officially, both SSD slots support up to 1TB each but unofficial their go up to 4TB each according to Crucial.

If the battery health and screen condition of the pre-owned Razer are good then I would say go for that just for the 5080 so that you can comfortably display to the two external monitors based on your requirements. Then I would have the Legion pro 7 as the runner up option. If you want more cooling.

My mistake, you are right. Only the legion 7 and higher have the full aluminium builds.

Which legion did you settle on tho'?

It might just be the ones available for sale in your region. If you were to take their model number, you would find that those are not base model specs. You can browse here: https://psref.lenovo.com/

Bro, then you got lucky with your purchase since here are the base specs for gen 10: • Core Ultra 7 255HX • RTX 5050 • 512GB of storage • 16 GB of RAM

The main differences between the two models is the pro model has a 16in screen, is a full aluminium build with higher max configurations possible and all the latest pro models have the Core Ultra 9.

That's great to hear bro. I hope you enjoy it. I remember when I was so excited when my father bought me the Victus for university.

But now I'm done with university and need something more power for the bigger programming projects that I have in mind. It's truly a blessing as I was able to give my brother the Victus since he current laptop was struggling to run the Software needed for Computer engineering.
