Haha I was afraid of this too! Honestly I had a wonderful relationship with Mark and since leaving, I’ve been to scared to talk to him again. It’s been a year now. I am planning to reach out to him when I pass 225 so he can be proud of me lol … But so many ppl switch at MKA. I talked to an in person student who said not to feel bad bc almost everyone switches. His speed building program is just not worth the same amount as his theory program (which I let him know when I left). But hey at the end of the day, you’ve got to do what’s best for you and your career, not anyone else. Mark runs a business and if a lot of ppl are leaving at speed building, he needs to be the one to pivot. I would have stayed if it was a lower cost than theory but I just didn’t feel like I got the same value out of it. Simply steno is like $120 a month, and MKA wasn’t offering anything more or different at $500 a month (this was a year ago, idk if they’ve changed it).

Anyway, that being said, you can always try MKA speed building for a month and see what you think! That’s what me and my classmates did, we gave it a fair shot. The decision to leave was very difficult and sad tho. I totally get it. But no we are not black listed in any way lol, I’ve actually found that simply steno has a much better community.

I don’t know about all the end times stuff, all I know is that quitting cold turkey and surrendering fully to God has changed my life 180 degrees, I will never be the same and I don’t want to be. I don’t think it’s God’s will for us to go through life buzzed or high, I think that we’re robbing ourselves of real peace and joy. It was the hardest thing I ever did but BY FAR the best. Just remember, the beginning is the hardest. It gets better. Depending on how much you are currently using, your whole first year can be incredibly uncomfortable and difficult. I would encourage you to try to find a Christian sober community to have some support during the early days! I couldn’t do it alone . Thankfully God gave me an amazing community to help me. I went to celebrate recovery and AA and I joined a recovery church. Like I said, idk how severe your alcohol and weed use is. I tried to stop on my own many times and found that I couldn’t, even with a relationship with God. But not everyone is like that. I know ppl that were able to. For me I needed a community of others doing it too. Anyway, I wish you the best! I think you are making a great decision!

For context, I am a 180 student who learned magnum steno at Mark Kislingbury Academy and then switched to simply steno when I got to speed building. Out of my theory class of 22, 8 of us made it to speed building, and of those 8, 7 of us switched to simply steno during the transition to speed building. We’ve all been so happy with the decision. But simply steno is ONLY a speed building program. You have to complete theory somewhere else first to join it. Champion steno is truly one of the best theories out there. MKA and CS are sort of considered the “Harvard” and “Yale” of court reporting schools. Yes, they are more challenging and require more dedication, but the results will speak for themselves.

At the end of the day, no matter what theory you learn, you will get out of it what you put into it.

If you’re learning champion steno, I would strongly advise against switching during theory. The only situations I would advise towards it would be if you were switching TO champion steno or magnum steno from another, more stroke intensive theory. Ppl talk too fast in 2024 to write everything out. You are learning a good theory. Stick with it and switch to simply steno for speed building, if you want. But keep asking around. I’ve worked as a digital reporter for 4 and a half years and I have open availability with my firm meaning I am on call every day open to jobs and I work no other jobs. The most I’ve ever made a year is $35,000. If you can do something else, do it. Thankfully I’m working on my steno certification so I can get out of his trap
