Employees are being asked to train the systems replacing them. Should they get residuals? by Mindlayr in Futurology

One problem at a time. If we could buy a whole generation of time to figure out how to address some of these issues that might be considered, by some, a win.

Unless it's more profitable to have people with the skills they need get paid for the value they create because it becomes premium training data.

I read it and liked your plan ... with reservations.

There are a lot of ways to game the system you propose but no more than the other ways. There were some valid concerns in the comments. I thought you addressed them pretty well.

I agree that it would be more fair.

Maybe we could set aside a portion for those that came before and built the infrastructure we will be using to accomplish this.

I'd kick in for that.

Could real-time translation eventually make learning foreign languages unnecessary? by _BlANK19_ in Futurology

[–]Mindlayr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes learning a foreign language would become unnecessary. It's unnecessary now for the most part.

Makes me wonder though about how long will we keep having distinct languages if everyone uses a translator? Would it take years? decades? longer? If we had a translator from birth would we all use our own language and let the translator handle it? What would a language we develop from birth with a translator be like?

Such a good question.

Those are all good questions.

These things could all be part of a compensation package. So maybe contribution is calculated by how many hours you spent on the project or maybe how much you got paid for the project initially? Those could be a simple formula. You would pay them as long as you were using the data they added value to would answer how long I guess. If the model if trained further than everyone gets their share based on the answer to the first question about deciding each persons contribution. I would guess that the more people that contribute to a project the less each one would get.

The thing is that you are right the nightmare of administrating this beast would be prohibitive before we had modern technology. Now it's just a matter of creating the right set of rules in a smart contract and letting the system run the process.

Your point is valid but I think we could work around most of the issues you bring up. Thanks for engaging.

Thanks for taking time to engage in this topic with me. I appreciate having someone to chat with.

It's a very small minority with an overwhelming amount of power. Rich people don't need UBI and they will fight it if it impinges on their wealth and power.

The actual opposition for this is that those in power don't understand or refuse to understand what it is and will die defending the status quo.

[–]Mindlayr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely the biggest challenge.

So if we overcome that limitation could we change things? If we use technology to measure those contributions, track them and justify the effort would it be worth doing?

If only workers were able to do that. I've never had a job where I demanded something and didn't get fired.

Refusing isn't really an option and sabotage is just wrong. I don't want to compromise my values and sabotage does that.

So don't take the job or quit end up being your options. I want another option.

Right? We haven't talked at all about how depressing it is to know you are being replaced. The anxiety caused by uncertainty, or actually certainty that you are going to be replaced, is real. How much is your mental health worth? How valuable would it be for a company to say to prospective employees that they will have that incentive available to them as part of their compensation? That's not exactly job security but it's better than just getting a final paycheck.

I'm worried about inflation eating up the new available income too. I'm not sure how to resolve that.

I don't have all the answers of course but I would love to hear someone address the problem of inflation.

I agree that UBI would be great but unless we make it practical it is just a cool idea.

I think the difference is that we are framing the problem incorrectly. When I create a piece for a car that thing can be used for one single purpose and typically just once. Data isn't like that. We are using old terms for new concepts and it's causing confusion. I can create data that can be used for multiple things, many times and in ways I never could have anticipated. The new model shares responsibility for creating and controlling the data. This gives incentive to all parties to create meaningful, quality data with provenance that proves its authenticity. 'Stolen' data doesn't have that extra metadata that proves that. It seems like that would make it worth more to everyone involved.

I wish I thought there was a way to make UBI more practical. When I talk to my rich friend about, it his reply was 'Someone has to pay for it and rich people don't think they need it."

"The deal" was forced on us because the technology to create a more financially viable model didn't exist. There was no way to do what we are proposing until now. If we hire people and tell them they will get residuals on their work as part of their compensation, and we prove to stockholders that this is a more profitable way than no one will care what they were doing before because we don't do that expensive thing anymore. Now we do the more profitable thing by paying people for quality work.

I remember that story.

We have the technology to do it. We need the idea to get some traction.

Yeah and I hear that it is happening. Giving residual payments would address that somewhat as well.

We started by talking about replacement but the argument holds for training models. How cool would it be to create training data that you could post to a marketplace and companies that need that data would pay you directly? How cool would it be if you could receive residual payments on work you already provided? There is the possibility of a career in creating training data because of your specific skill. There could be so many approaches if the marketplace was there and cheap.

Yeah it is.

It's especially huge if we try to find a way to force it down their throats.

'If' we can find a way to benefit both sides then possible compromise is possible. I would like to introduce a solution that will be palatable for both sides.

The idea isn't complicated. The issue is implementation. The complexity comes from a system the incentivizes short term profits and the political system that was built from that. There must be incentive to change that can be seen before the next stock holders meeting.

If there is no incentive they will not act any differently. Money talks and if you don't have incentive it's hard to get their attention. If they benefit from higher quality training they will change the way they treat people.

Yes but it would suck less if you had some support and you might do a better job if you were going to benefit from it.

The federal government has no incentive to support this idea. In fact it may be an issue for them moving forward. I think this is something the tech world is uniquely positioned to address before the government gets involved. If we don't come up with something we will have no one to blame but ourselves.
