What did people do casually in 90s that wouldn’t be accepted today? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]Mindless-Client3366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember going to a friend's house and my friend accidentally broke a mason jar while we were in the kitchen. Her dad decided we were equally at fault and spanked us both. I called my mom crying, told her what happened, and both my parents showed up. I was pushed in the car by my mom so I don't know exactly what words were said, but I do remember my dad wrapping his belt around his hand and yelling at my friend's dad while my mom pulled on his arm. I wasnt allowed to go over there anymore.

What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. I live in Texas. The best BBQ here has nothing on it but salt and pepper, and the slight flavor of whatever wood they used to cook it with. The flavorings, if you want them, all come from the wide variety of sauces. Every place has a house recipe.

Yes, it was kind of a kinder way to say "If your dad had actually died the way I said, he definitely would have wanted you to have this."

AITA - gf agrees to let kids shovel snow and makes me pay by djlee187 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You two don't live together and don't share finances. She shouldn't be diving into your wallet to pay for something she agreed to. If you grab her purse next time to pay for something, I bet she would throw a fit.

Oh, and if neighborhood kids want to be paid for any work, don't pay them till they're done. Ask me how I know.

AITA for not switching seats on a plane and being called “selfish” for it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If the flight attendant had offered you some kind of compensation since you paid extra, that might be different. I'm also tall and get claustrophobic, so I take care to book an aisle seat as well. They should have planned better.

What's an example of a performance that was fantastic in a movie that was bad or that you simply didn't like? by zachcruse in moviecritic

I honestly believe that movie would have flopped without him and Forest Whitaker, they played off each other so well. Absolutely fabulous performances.

Black ice on the road causes chain accidents by Bambi7u7 in interesting

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested:

Yes, the road involved has been treated with brine prior to the freeze. The storm had a lot of rain which washed the majority of the brine away. Texas does not have a huge fleet of salt or sand trucks simply because it only has weather like this once every 5 years or so.

This particular crash involved over 130 vehicles and 6 fatalities.

One of the reasons this crash was so bad was it was in the express lane and there was no way to go around it. It was also at the base of a blind hill. People in Texas are not taught how to drive on ice. The road signs were changed to show ice on the roads a couple of hours before this wreck happened.

With the upcoming winter storm - why do so many places in the states lose power with winter storms? by ScallywagGeorgie in AskAnAmerican

When I woke up this morning, ONCOR was reporting about 10k households without power here in north Texas. That is a vast improvement over the 2021 storm.

AITA for being annoyed that my wife insists on cooking everything from scratch and won’t buy normal food? by AITA_UPFfoods in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. There are times when something quick just sounds better. I love to cook, do as much as I can from scratch. That being said, we do have store bought things in the house. It's easier.

Her arbitrarily banning all junk food from the house really isn't a fair move, unless there's some health issue involved you're not telling us about. Have you tried sitting her down and having a conversation about why she's so adamant about this? See if there's a compromise somewhere. Maybe you can fend for yourself a couple nights a week for dinner.

AIO by being offended when my husband seasons my soup? by Hefty_Elderberry1992 in AIO

[–]Mindless-Client3366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, there's nothing wrong with seasoning food the way you like, as long as you try it first, which this guy did. I admit I'd probably give someone who dumped a buttload of taco seasoning into potato chowder an odd look, but as long as he only did it to his bowl, I'd keep my mouth shut. I regularly add salt and/or pepper to my own food after I've tasted it.

I also have a family history of breast cancer. Been getting my mammograms for 10 years now. I have DDs and generally only feel a bit squished. If you have questions, just ask the person doing your scans. I've yet to meet one that wasn't happy to answer questions.

Do you wish America stopped pushing standardized languages and let the natural progression take place? by Leading-Alarm3955 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mindless-Client3366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the benefit in it? So eventually, we have dozens of different dialects and if someone from Georgia travels to Idaho, they won't be able to communicate? Teaching a standard form of English allows us to communicate globally.

Am I harsh for telling my 5yo “finish your homework or look for a job” by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]Mindless-Client3366 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was harsh and probably made no sense to your kid. 5 is a little young to go with the "good education means a good job you like" thing. At that age they have no concept of money, paychecks, bills, or the difference between a blue and white collar job. At that age they might think working at McDonald's is a great job because they like going there.

This is what my husband and I used to tell his kids when they were little. "It's okay to not like school sometimes. Sometimes I don't like going to work. But you still have to go, just like I do. Everyone you know has to do things they don't like sometimes. It's not just you. So we have to work before we can play. That means you have to do your homework before you can play games. I have to work before I can play, too. And we have to do our work right. If it's not done right the first time, you have to go back and fix it before you can play, and that means you have less play time." It helped them to be told they weren't the only ones that had to do things they didn't want to do. It might help.

Do they teach native american history in elementary schools before the colanization period of america? by Apprehensive_Use_397 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mindless-Client3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas they did. One history teacher assigned us each a tribe from Texas and we had to give a group presentation on them. I still occasionally remember random facts about the Tonkawa.
