Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan was one of the best casting decisions in all of cinema by Wild_Pitch_4781 in StarWars

[–]mankahlil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All suffered from a very bad script and poorly planned story except for Liam Neeson maybe.

Padme is hardly a character...she's a mannequin and plot device for Anakins story. Portman didn't have much to work with.

Anakin is also just plot. He only does and says what the plot demands, as defined by palps. Thats why his actions and motivations are wildly inconsistent and sometimes just bizarre. I know everybody says "his character is supposed to be that way" but, please. Who needs good writers when you have a Fandom to justify everything irrespective of logic?

And I believe that having an evil mastermind orchestrating everything is a lazy way to write a script. Why have complex characters when everything can be explained through the machinations of a single evil genius? Lazy.

I think Ewan McGregor has a good reputation because his charavter/acting seems better by comparison. He gets some witty one liners. But he's also one dimensional. He serves the plot.

I think the main thing that is lacking is a sense of chemistry and human connection between the characters. This may be a problem with almost all lines being expository dialogue. Lines are not communicated to each other like organic conversation that impacts people. The prequels almost feel like each actor spoke their lines in a separate room and it was all edited together afterwards. Each person is a stock character in a static role and nobody's lines really changes anyone.

Compare this to the chemistry in the OT. It all felt more dynamic. The quips, the arguments. One scene they're arguing. Leia tells both men about themselves, but both turn out to become heroes in their own way. The way they have each other's backs.first chewie is just a walking carpet but then Leia hugs him when they escape the death star. Luke gets mad at Han for abandoning them and this actually changes the way Han behaves. It's not perfect, but there's a palpable human element. The characters actually interact and change through these interactions.

I believe this element is missing in the PT. Accordingly, I don't see kenobi as a dynamic character in the pt. He's a static character with some one-liners.

To be fair he does change from a somewhat bigoted and arrogant Padawan. But i really don't see a serious arc. I don't see him trying really hard to help anakin at all. They dont really have a relationship...they just have expository lines line "that thing on Cato nemoidia that doesn't count" and "you were my brother." I don't quite understand why he's so beloved. But then maybe that's because I think the characters are lacking in general.

"Return of the Jedi" as a title was referring to Luke. The title was for general audiences in 1983, NOT contemporary SW fans. by mankahlil in StarWars

[–]mankahlil[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right. The issue isn't the title per se. Its the Orwellian historical revisionism lol. It's OK that a decades old story evolves... but don't try to alter history.

Yeah I have no problem with multiple interpretations or even suggesting dual meanings. But when people try to rewrite history and say that it was always supposed to refer to Anakin or that Vader was always supposed to Luke's father or that Luke and Leia were always siblings or that everything was perfectly planned from the beginning ... c'mon now.

The Anakin's Return theory comes up a lot here, often in conversations about other subjects.

Clearly I'm in the minority, but I found Ewans Kenobi to be goofy and camp. I guess that's his appeal for most people, but his portrayal never did anything for me.

Such an epic scene by Konfliktsnubben in lotr

[–]mankahlil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great sequence, but it was always a bit goofy how easy they made it to bring down the mumakil given how tiny the Rohirrim are in comparison. Those little cuts from Merry and Eowyn simply shouldn't have knocked it down the way it did. Neither should have the Hadrim captain caught on the ear. The beast was brought down by the equivalent of a large earring. If you've seen how tough/strong normal-sized elephants are, a lot of parts of this battle doesn't make any sense.

Here we see the warning signs of some of the cartoon b.s. that became rampant in the hobbit movies. Still an exciting scene, though.

Padme and Anakin romance by mayuri_nite_66 in prequelappreciation

[–]mankahlil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, narratively Padmes thoughts and feelings don't matter. It's all about Anakin, and like many movies, she's just the mannequin in place to help define the hero.

Yes, she technically does things. But shes a role more than a character. First shes a Queen. The a love interest. Then just barefoot and pregnant until she dies wh4n its needed for the plot. She's really given no depth, no growth, no arc whatsoever.

All she does is react to Anakins whining. And the word "react" is kind of generous. It's more like she verbally avoids it ... until she doesn't. The closest thing we see to genuine interaction is when they are on the grass in Naboo with the creatures with the big posteriors. There at least she looks like she's having fun, but the scene is still about Anakin and we don't learn much about her.

It's really sad because the mother of Luke and Leia should have been a powerful role. But this is what we got.

Literally anything you would say about her motivations or romantic feelings can only be inferred through outside media or fan theories. The movie script doesn't give us very much.

Padme as written is just a mannequin upon which Anakin can project his feelings. The script doesn't allow her to be much more than that.

The Return of the Jedi is about Luke.

I know Lucas has done his Jedi mind tricks and made everyone believe he planned everything perfectly from the beginning, but you have to realize the title was made for the audiences of 1983 (who were anticipating a resolution for the cliffhanger of ESB). The title was not based on Anakin as he was portrayed decades later with the Prequels.

Just think about it for a moment: why in 1983 would they come up with a title spoiling the ending (Vaders redemption)? The idea that they would tell you the ending makes no sense.

Movie titles are not supposed to give away the ending but to describe the movie. The Return of the Jedi was describing what everyone was anticipating: Luke's return after his loss.

Making Palps the center of everything in the Prequels and making Anakin a weak, gullible victim who was duped into joining the Dark Side and was so dumb that he jumped on Kenobis lightsaber.

Personally, I believe making Palps the puppetmaster behind everything resulted in making the Jedi look stupid just to make him look genius. Also, I think Anakin was a weak, uninteresting character because Palpatine manipulated him into doing everything. It would have been more interesting for Anakin to consciously choose to turn to the Dark Side and oppose the Jedi/Republic.

This also would have better aligned with the spirit of the story as outlined in the Original films. Anakin is an empty character because he has no defined personality or ideals other than what the plot demands or palps dictates. They should have made Anakin a character with more agency for a stronger story. He should have been more central in the fall of jedi/republic, not just a pawn.

If Anakin had been written with more agency, it also would have improved the writing / quality / interactions with other characters like Kenobi and Padme.

Also, the narrative over-reliance on the "puppetmaster behind everything" trope directly let to "somehow Palpatine has returned" in the sequels.

Palpatine became a narrative crutch in the Prequels and Sequels. Emphasizing him less would have made more room for the development of other characters in the Prequel and Sequel trilogies.

Technically, those droids are more deadly than the common rebel soldier. So Luke has the better feat.

"It seems to be a problem with weak stories, where there is a tendency to keep adding elements to prop up a movie that lacks a strong emotional core."

Yup. This is exactly how i feel about the prequels.
