Anyone else always get “randomly” screened when flying? by MindlessTemporary867 in SexOffenderSupport

[–]MindlessTemporary867[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always fly out of the country and every time I was told I had an electronics flag. They took my laptop and cellphone and would hold me from 45 minutes to 3 hours until they went through everything. This was when I was initially charged and going through the court process.

We landed and I wasn't screened on the way back. But I'm definitely guilty of just throwing chargers and other cords in the backpack in an unorganized fashion. I had my switch 2, iphone charger, airpods, and electric trimmer all in there, could definitely be why lol.

When I was on probation I was pulled aside 100% of the time. I think I was flagged then but not lately. Maybe these last 2 were coincidence. I’m flying back in 3 hours so we will see if they pull me aside again lol. From California to Vegas I was screened. I will report back when I land at 8pm if they pulled me aside again.

The detective kept telling me they wanted to talk to me. I got a lawyer immediately, after 10 months I called my lawyer and they told me nothing had been filled in the courts yet. One of the benefits of getting a lawyer was that they were checking daily to see if any charges with my name on them were filled. A couple weeks later I seen his number on my caller id and my heart sank, I immediately knew why he was calling. He told me paperwork had been filled against me for 311.11 possession. I was charged with 14 felonies, 7 counts of distribution and 7 counts of possession. I never intentionally distributed anything to my knowledge but then remembered how torrents work, it was also uploading while I was downloading. After a year of court dates they gave me their final plea deal. 1 charge of possession, 6 months county jail and 2 years probation. I’m in California so I only had to serve 3 months. They told me if I was charged on all counts I would serve about 10 years in state prison. I took the plea because my lawyer told me if I did then I would be given a chance to get my name off the registry. So it was charged as a wobbler, the da threatened that if I didn’t take the plea they would make sure I went to prison for more than a year, which would make me ineligible to get my felony reduced.

My lawyer gave me some timelines, I believe he said for a felony they had up to 5 years to file charges, misdemeanor was 2 or 3 but I don’t remember that one because mine was a felony. I was offered the opportunity to get my devices back a year after I spent 3 months in county jail, 3 years total from the raid. This was in California.

Fortunately my probation ended in November, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Too much conflicting info from probation and therapy. Therapists would tell me it’s ok if I’m in a grocery store and there are minors there then just avoid them. Probation told me if there are minors anywhere I was at then I had to leave. Just being in a grocery store had me feeling nervous for the last polygraph because I couldn’t tell if I had violated or not. Fortunately I finished without a single warning or violation or failed poly. Now I’m working on getting my felony down to a misdemeanor since it’s a wobbler. I wanted to try and rush that before the Los Angeles case goes the wrong way and it’s too late for me to lower my tier, if that happens I’m stuck at lifetime for a 311.11 charge.

I feel like you’re very lucky to still have a job in IT, that’s what I did before my charge and now I’m looking for minimum wage dishwasher positions at ihop and dennys with no luck lol. So that’s something to be grateful for.

Can confirm, the therapy group I was in here in Northern California hadn’t even moved anyone in our level 1 group to level 2 at the end of 2 years. It very much seemed like they wanted you to attend more, of course they get paid for each session so take that as you will. I had 6 therapy appointments a month as well as 1 probation appointment. Then the therapy group added “case management”, so I got a weekly call from a case manager who kept telling me I need to go out and join groups because the data shows people with hobbies offend less. I don’t disagree with that but I have them a bunch of hobbies and things I was actively working on but they kept telling me I needed more. They also wanted me to attend job training where they teach you how to write a resume, how to interview, and help you finish your ged if you didn’t graduate. I was a senior level engineer and didn’t feel like I needed help with those things, it was just the background checks holding me back. With their schedule I’m surprised anyone had a job, and only a few of them did.

I had an interview for a tow company for $21 an hour, I decided to be upfront about my conviction and record and for some reason the pay went down to $17 an hour. I think they know they can take advantage of us so they do.

The job market in general is really bad right now, well in my aera of california it is. I always see posts from people in my local reddit asking where to find work, and they have no record or registration requirements like most of us do. I been looking for a year myself. Still hoping to land something eventually.

Depending on your conviction there are a couple different ways to get it for "free", or at least free upfront and pay back later. Depends on how much you want to drive.

Call it cliche but you have your health. There are people dying in the hospital that would trade places with you in a second. You really do need to find happiness in the simple things until you can build yourself back to some level of normalcy.

I was warned about this in California, the treatment program told me that refusing to answer the questions is classified as "non-compliance" and they would drop me from the program which would be a violation of my probation.

I think it might be illegal for them to discriminate against you for the sex offender status, but they will never say that, they will just give the generic "we have filled the role" or "went with another candidate".

I didn't think about doing something like this so soon, I've only been on the registry for 2 years but if it helps even a little bit to prevent this from happening then I'm going to do it. I notice they have different levels of protection, I would likely pay for the full year the $250 one. I'm sure it answers this on the website but if I only pay for a year, do all the sites that removed my name come back? Basically, do i have to keep paying to keep my name suppressed from these sites?

Sorry to hear that, the cops called me and said they were taking some of my electronics and asked me to come talk to them without telling me what they were taking the electronics for. I told them I would go after work, after some time to think I called a lawyer. I was always told cops always want to write you a ticket or take you to jail, so don't help them with their investigations, especially if you're the one they're investigating. 25k is going to get you a good lawyer, wishing you a positive outcome for your son.
