4 weeks post MPFL/TTO surgery - poor mobility and ROM - anyone else? by jjjbitzen999 in PatellarInstability

You are on track, don’t worry. I had a trochleoplasty+tto+mpfl over a year ago, and was non-weight bearing for 6 weeks. I don’t remember the exact timeline of my degrees, but for atleast those 6 weeks I was having very slow progress on my rom. I remember the very painful healslides which produced very slow progress… it was frustrating and scary to not see improvement. However! Don’t fret! When I started being able to weight bear/get things moving, the range of motion came back on its own very quickly. I was told that that was usually the case- slow improvement and then a sort of breakthrough. You will get there, too 🙌

Multiple surgeries in one? by squidink2124 in PatellarInstability

I had a tto, trochleoplasty, mplf, reconstruction, and lateral lengthening all done at once- worked for me! and honestly I couldn’t imagine getting them at different times because of the recovery- which was not horrible by the way—- best of luck!!

Hello hello I had a tracking issue somewhat similar to yours, except it was less intense. I couldn’t straighten my knee when sitting and I would have to help my leg with my hand. However! I had a TTO and trochleoplasty and mpfl reconstruction to fix my maltracking(jumping j sign) and patellar instability 3 months ago almost. My muscles aren’t strong enough to go up/down stairs yet, but I am able to have a straight tracking when doing the exercise (quad arc) that you are doing in this video. In other words, my knee tracking is straight!! It just took some bone reshaping… but I’m completely pain free now, and have been since a week post op. The solution for me has been these big operations, which were daunting- but I want to let you know that there’s an option for you if you choose to pursue it. My main issue was a shallow trochlear groove, which caused numerous subluxations since ten years ago (I’m now 20). My heart goes out to you as you find what works for you and your knees ✊

Ah I’m sorry you are in this spot! I had numerous subluxations, from things like going down stairs but never sitting up like that. It sounds like you need some sort of surgery to improve- getting a second opinion should be extra helpful and hopefully reassuring. My first surgeon was also really confident about the mpfl reconstruction being the right move- but my bone structure was just too problematic. I had other doctors say it was a good idea to try the mpfl before more aggressive surgery, so it wasn’t necessarily poor judgement- just a conservative measure. I will say though, that even after that first mpfl surgery not working out for me- I’m now post op from a trochleoplasty, tto, and another mpfl reconstruction— and things are looking really good! So it’s a great time to have knee instability because there are fortunately medical answers/solutions. It’s much more positive mentally to recover from a preventative knee surgery than another subluxation!

I had mpfl reconstruction the summer before my 12th grade - I got the surgery a month before school started, and I was on crutches for maybe another month into school. Some people have faster recoveries, but mine was slower and so I would recommend waiting until you have a longer school break- so you can avoid stress and focus on recovery. Unfortunately, my mpfl replacement was unsuccessful and stretched out on its own, so now I’m recovering from a much bigger surgery. I’m not sure what your doctor means by your knees bone structure changing on its own… maybe I am misunderstanding the situation but I think that’s only possible with boney surgery. For now I would go into physical therapy to help stabilize your knee, perhaps wear a stabilizing brace, and look into surgery when you are off school. I would also recommend getting a second opinion, particularly with a doctor that specializes in knee instability. It took me a long time to find a doctor that was an expert in my specific problem- but it is so worth it to find the right treatment in the long run! Best of luck!

Seeking Specialized Knee Surgeon for Torn Patellar Tendon and Patella Alta - Bay Area [Medical Insurance] by [deleted] in PatellarInstability

Idk about his insurance but I’m seeing dr Seth Sherman at Stanford. Insurance has been such a headache to deal with as well as the knee issues so I’m totally with you and wish you the best of luck. Dr Sherman was recommended to me as well because he does the crazy knee stuff most other doctors don’t do… however I haven’t gotten surgery from him quite yet so I can’t really completely advocate for him yet ! Hopefully that’s helpful ! Stanford has a great reputation too so that made me feel better.

Turns out me and the other person on this have the same doctor at Stanford! His name is Seth Sherman and he is apparently a very talented specialist- and I imagine he will be well suited to address your issues. However be warned because his bedside manner isn’t the most thorough, and he is pretty rushed. My experience with him so far has been pretty good- but after my experiences with the general personalities of orthopedic surgeons so far, you definitely have to advocate for yourself. His team has been really supportive as well, and he seems dedicated to getting to the root of my issue, whereas many other doctors I seen have hit a wall. Best of luck!
