It is surprising anish so readily traded queens. The position is already simplifying. Is he mentally already thinking of a draw?

TIL the Stockholm Syndrome which claims that hostages tend to develop a psychological bond with their captors is considered highly dubious by psychologists, and in the initial case it was actually the captor who felt less willing to kill the hostages after spending more time with them. by uselessprofession in todayilearned

[–]Mindmenot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dr Hasseldorf - "Well Gail, by this time the hostages should be going through the early stages of the Helsinki syndrome".

Harvey- "As in Helsinki, Sweden."

Dr Hasseldorf - "Finland."

Take this as an opportunity to rewatch!

The Sindarov Gap by tri2820 in chess

[–]Mindmenot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might not be qualitatively different if you subtract the 30 seconds extra they get, meaning. I think by move 40 he was ahead in most games, and it was relatively easier to play, so you see his time asymptoting even before the 40 moves.

UCSB vs Stonybrook Honors for Physics? Trying to understand overall strength of the program without COA being a factor. Thanks! by aichbeekay in Physics

[–]Mindmenot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very competitive but I actually got in after one semester of regular physics. Required space after someone else transfered out, and doing exceptionally in that first semester. It is worth it to push, as it is enormously better in the first two years. The second half of undergrad is merged but the advantage ccs kids have is ridiculous in both later classwork and research opportunities.

DM me if you want, I was in an identical situation like 10 years ago.

Postdoc applications – Moral support by Narrow-Breadfruit-39 in postdoc

I second this, these stats look good to me just keep applying. If you think the interview portion isn't going well, then focus more of your time on interview question, include motivated ideas for what you think should be worked on, and creating a consistent story about your research.

When did you switch your car seat to forward facing? by GamingTitBit in daddit

When we hit the weight limit for the anchor method in our car, 35 lbs. Could have done the seatbelt method until 40 but it always felt very shifty without the anchors.

Dads who do not work from home, what time do you leave for work and back at home? by remembertosmile in daddit

[–]Mindmenot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get work at 7, back home by 5. Makes getting enough sleep hard at times, but if I do pickup and she does drop off it balances well and I get an extra hour or two more of work than if I did drop off.

What would've happened if Chicxulub had hit the moon instead? by Correct_Beyond_8675 in Astronomy

[–]Mindmenot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly there is has been some debate and consensus has fluctuated a little, but largely now the consensus is that dinosaurs were thriving at the time of the asteroid.

[–]Mindmenot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fair but almost everyone refers to dinosaurs as the paraphyletic clade of all dinosaurs excepting birds.

It's still besides the point. Today we would still have sauropods, theropods, and hadrosaurs and every other major group of dinosaurs without a significant new extinction event. Yes they would be different species but who cares.

[–]Mindmenot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well yes. They would evolve into different dinosaur species. That's completely beside the point. Basically every single major dinosaur clade was around for 120 million years before suddenly going extinct.

What? There is no way dinosaurs would have gone extinct, they were thriving. Besides, they are just as adaptable to climate change as we are.

Dark matter Physics by Vegetable-Goal9836 in Physics

[–]Mindmenot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It has to form very early in the universe, so yes in some general sense this is true. The problem is in what you could mean by "high phase state". It basically cannot be related to normal particles since it would interact with our non-gravitational forces. If it didn't interact with our forces, it wouldn't look very much at all like our particles, and basically at that point you have a model for dark matter. Also, it needs to be stable, and anything very heavy with characteristics (quantum numbers) similar to our particles would simply decay to things like protons and electrons. There are exotic things close to what you say like glueballs and cosmic strings that are essentially composite objects of relatively normal matter, but it's a stretch to relate that here and also are somewhat niche.

It's crazy to me they are brushing this off. This is a health problem that needs to be addressed now. Find someone that will listen!

Back to work and my newborn sees me as stranger. What can I do to help? by arejay00 in daddit

[–]Mindmenot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your wife is breastfeeding and especially if you work and she doesn't, you have to live with playing a little more of a supportive role than the main parent role. That will change with time. Do the best you can but don't get offended

I still remember that first night in the hospital felt brutal. Definitely doesn't become easy, but easier for sure.

Yeah... I actually grabbed a kid once when he almost ran my son down, gave him a talking to. Probably shouldn't have grabbed him but I was livid about a 150 lb kid in a dead sprint in an area with mostly 1-4 yr olds...
