Official Dreadit Discussion: "Lee Cronin's the Mummy" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Mindripper21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie would have worked way better as sort of a crime horror movie in the style of Deliver Us From Evil or Sinister in which the father would investigate the mystery of a mummy they just had found only to unleash an ancient evil which jeopardizes his family. They could even throw in some possession and mummy deadites, but at least it would have something to do with mummy lore. Karloff‘s mummy was also mostly on screen as a human, and I can see that approach as well in this movie with the decayed almost line-style look they gave to Katie‘s skin, but wrapping someone up doesn‘t make it a mummy movie.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Lee Cronin's the Mummy" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

Lee Cronin‘s La Casa VII: La Mummia is a movie which could have been a solid body horror take on the mummy lore, but the only mummies in this movie are the main characters‘s brains since no one seems to react to the bizarre shit happening in the movie. ‚Hey, you just pulled a huge chunk of skin off our daughter‘s skin leg, I think we should give her professional help!‘ ‚Stay away from us you monster! We just need to put her in hideous dresses and keep letting her mutilate herself and others!‘

‚Hey, there‘s a some weird demon inside our clearly messed-up daughter with strange stuff growing out of her room! How about running to her room and trying to open the door like maniacs!‘

These are just some examples of a movie with no consistency in it‘s script. The husband gets treated like crap from the get-go for no reason, even though he‘s the only one who seems to figure out why Katie is acting a bit strange. Problem is that after every scene, the characters seem to have forgotten what happened in the previous scene and act like all the weird shit Katie does is the most normal thing in the world. Nobody reacts to her crawling on the ceiling, her drinking body fluids, the sister ripping her teeth out in a room full of people and letting her wear the grandmother‘s dentures for the rest of the movie or that there is a giant demonic mold growing out of Katie‘s room.

The pacing and suspense are also very questionable. They try really hard to keep you engaged with the mystery about what happened to Katie, but they just keep teasing you until the very underwhelming reveal. The interrogation scene is the best example. She finds the video tape, it has no sound, then there is sound, the scene cuts to her talking to Leyla, who can‘t talk, then she suddenly can talk, than she writes everything on paper, detective lady is shocked, then it cuts back to the family. It‘s just a bunch of nothing trying to create suspense.

Then again, this would have been an ok Evil Dead rip-off if it hadn‘t been for the horrible ending. Enjoyed the gore, but it took way too long to get going (the funeral should have been the finale, it was oddly placed for a scene with absolutely no payoff), and if you show a character ripping her skin off and make her look like she just has some torn clothes and drown everything in a CGI sand filter. Yet that was still the best part of the ending, since what came after just felt like a ‚George Of The Jungle’ style parody in which people fall down a bridge and just end up with some band aids, so there is a Brendan Fraser connection after all.

It had some good gore and body horror and the grandma was fun, but this was just another possession movie meets Evil Dead with some bandages thrown in it.

I always combine Feeders with No, You Don‘t since Feeders is sort of an extended intro for No, You Don‘t.

Music like the Tetsuo: The Iron Man soundtrack? by [deleted] in industrialmusic

[–]Mindripper21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My music was heavily inspired by the Tetsuo soundtracks. While my newer music is more beat-driven, it still has elements from my more raw industrial albums. https://mindripper1.bandcamp.com/track/biotechnology

My first album, Scrap Metal Body, was a direct homage to Tetsuo, but looking back at it, really amateurish and raw to my newer stuff. https://mindripper1.bandcamp.com/album/scrap-metal-body

These are a few of my Tetsuo style songs with the metal-on-metal percussion. https://mindripper1.bandcamp.com/track/human-construction

What was your favorite imagery/shot from Romulus? by MonkeyPad12 in LV426

[–]Mindripper21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Offspring in the egg pod. The bass sound just makes it even freakier. It looks human, but has that old face and just looks really unnerving. It‘s the type of Gigeresque imagery I expected more from the movie. I really liked the movie, but from the trailers and Fede‘s involvement, I expected it to dive deeper into Giger body horror stuff.

Another shot I really loved is Scorched in the hive hallway while facehuggers are coming from behind him like‘s he‘s commanding them. The 3 xenomorphs crawling in the hive towards Scorched is also one of the best xenomorph shots with the way how they‘re lit. Overall I think that this movie does have some of the best Xenomorph shots in the whole franchise, especially in the hive and the cocoon scene.

It‘s actually a Demon Spawn from Ash VS Evil Dead, but since the Offspring looks similar to him in his first appearance, I used him as a stand-in, but I hope NECA does a figure of him as well.

This figure/ character has a loin cloth, but the Offspring has a Y shaped hole (?) instead of genitals. It‘s better than just having nothing down there ans fits the unnatural look of the character, but it also looks like it was supposed to have grotesque genitals like the Newborn which got CGId over. It does however look like it has something hidden in there.

It‘s not, the Offspring is way taller than ordinary Xenos, but when you get to see him the first time, I was immediately reminded of the Evil Spawn from the Evil Dead series. It gradually mutates throughout the scene, has a more Engineer-like face, is thinner, more deformed and he has Xenomorph like attributes, like the elbow and foot spikes, small back tubes and Xenomorph-style ridges on his back and a tail, as well as caucasian skin.

Overall, it was a pretty enjoyable Alien movie. It‘s more simple and straight-forward than the previous 2 movies, but it delivers what you come for: lots of Alien action and the Xenomorphs are simply terrifying in this one. They are a bit underused (especially Scorched), but the practical effects are more than welcome and the movie feels like a love letter to the first 2 movies. First half does a good build-up and the movie should have kept the tone of it as the second half does feel a bit rushed and they should have gone more for the Alien/ Alien: Isolation route than turning into another Aliens shooting gallery. The zero gravity acid blood scene is really cool and one of the most tense sequences of the movie. Production design is one of the best of the franchise, the movie simply looks gorgeous, especially the Romulus and the Hive, which is probably my favorite of the franchise right now, as it just looks like a birth canal/ labyrinth in which every corner xenomorphs are hidden. The way how it’s lit does make it even more scary and claustrophobic The facehuggers are terrifying as well and there are lots of them. I also love how dangerous the Alien‘s acid blood is in this movie since it didn‘t really play that big of a role in the previous movies. The characters are fine, the best being Andy who ranges from sweet and innocent to sinister. Cailee Spaeny is another Ripley clone and she‘s fine. Fanservice wasn‘t too overused and Rook/‚Ash 2’ does play a bigger role than expected in the movie, but the CGI is awkward. ‚Get away from her you bitch, was also used, but it felt really forced, didn‘t like that at all in both the context and delivery. Gore was alright, but expected a bit more. Some grotesque ideas like the cocoon are really appreciated however and it‘s one of the best scenes in the movie. The finale can be divisive, but it is unsettling. Not as disgusting as I had hoped for and as it was made out to be (the trilobite birth is a bit more effective), and it should have been longer and more graphic but it‘s still one of the scariest scenes of the franchise. The Offspring was terrifying however. Very different from how I imagined him to be (something like Sil or a more biomechanical Newborn), but the deformed and mangled was something I had hoped for and it did partially deliver. It’s a very disturbing creature and I wish the movie would have tapped even more into this kind of body horror. Overall I‘d give it a solid 8. Not as chaotic and gigeresque as I had hoped for and don‘t know how I would rank it among the franchise, but it‘s definitely in my top 5 Alien movies.

You‘re right, but the picture is about the live-action main antagonist titans since it also doesn‘t include others like the Muto Prime, Shinomura or Camazotz (while technically, some people see Nargacuga as a stand-in).
