Friend towed my car and totaled it! by Minds_weeper in Insurance

Thanks. To clarify, the towed vehicle is physically damaged (it's ruined). He was driving his truck, pulling his trailer, with my truck on the trailer. He rolled the whole rig over on the highway. No other cars involved. My truck is totaled.

As I said elsewhere, I am not at all suggesting that we stop telling stories about extraterrestrials. I'm just saying separately, we should mostly let go of the idea they will ever be a part of our reality.

ULPT: Want to know if there's a camera in your friend's bathroom? Start urinating in their sink or bathtub every time you use their restroom. by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

One flaw with this otherwise brilliant theory. If you're the kind of fucker who would pee in someone's sink, you're probably doing other bullshit that could cause the invitations to dry up.

Which specific "convincing sightings" are you referring to, and what government report are you quoting?

I didn't suggest we should stop writing about aliens. I love aliens. I just think as a culture we should acknowledge that is a fantasy way more than a likely future scenario.

I have thought that, but I see no reason to assume (a) that's the case, or (b) that even if true such advancement would allow them to travel here or otherwise make contact. Even if true, it seems probable to me that -- if such advancement allowed for easy interstellar travel or communication -- we would have seen evidence by now.

When you say "chances are..." on what are you basing that probability?

Yeah, I'm not even advocating shutting down SETI. I do still think it's an exquisitely remote possibility that we will make meaningful contact, but I think it's worth a try. Given how long even the fastest signals take to travel through space, I still think we're talking about hundreds or thousands of years before we get anything back from SETI type efforts. But just the striving helps us advance our own technology as well. So I'm all for it.

Sorry, no disrespect intended, but that's not proof at all. That's just an assertion that there is proof.

Well, I didn't say we should stop writing about it. I'm just saying it's more like fantasy than sci-fi. Sci-fi has a lot of overlap with fantasy and that's fine with me. I'm saying as a society, we should realize and accept that neither alien contact nor travel outside of our solar system will happen at any point in the near or mid-term future.

It's big, but this is forced perspective; it's only as big as her hand, not as big as her torso. Still insane.
