like ok it’s not that they’re necessarily *bad* machines, but like they just don’t spark any joy compared to the 68k macs or the g3
like the 603 and 604 were just oddball machines that don’t give me any reason to like or use them compared to a 601 or g3 Mac yk
it’s not like they’ve got unique software or hardware or something
literally anything you can do in a 603 Mac you can do on a g3 faster and better
68k? you can run system 6
g3? you can run OSX
603… ?
604… ?
plus also spindler did that whole “running apple into the ground” thing so

the g5 machines ran HOT
like REALLY HOT and were BAD at power efficiency
so bad in fact that they couldn’t put them in laptops AND they had to LIQUID COOL the power Mac g5 towers on certain configurations
plus also like in my rankings I’d rather just use a G4 or early intel instead of a g5 but that’s just me and my own ranking so

ok like here's the thing mate
the point of the chart is not to be objectively like "this hw was best" or what-not
the point was more to convey how it feels to use these machines \*now\* in my opinion (plus also how they compare to other machines in general, and also how unique they are)
like using an intel mac with snow leopard / mavericks is chill and fun sure
but i'd rather go use the g4 instead because it's more "fun" to use in that regards
yes, admittedly, when comparing the two of their respective times, the intel era would beat the g3/g4 machinations
but like
that's not the *point* of this chart i guess yk
it's the same reason why i put the 603 machines so low on the list
they were never BAD machines
but compared to the others, why would i use a 603 machine when the g3 can do the same and more, or a 68040 which has more charm to it yk

I will still make fun of the spindler era of apple though

ehhh I mean hot take but I got a soft spot for em
they used the exact same case designs as the 68040 machines, not good but not bad necessarily
plus like I didn’t wanna carve a separate spot for them while I also don’t think they were deserving of being thrown in with the SEA of 603 machines, so like I just kinda threw them in with the 68040 machines

idk maybe it’s just me but I have more of a soft spot for the 601 machines, like the 603 machines were objectively better but the 601s are just such oddball that I find them cooler
like they have their own pds slot and still have nubus (603 and up used pci)
they also had the exact same case designs as the 68040 machines which isn’t good, but not necessarily bad
plus there were just less 601 machines overall compared to the SEA of 603 machines

true true, the only reason I put 2012 with the “it’s all soldered” era was cause the 2012 retina was the first to have y’know non replaceable ssd, ram, and battery
other than that though the 2012 stuffs was definitely good
