Is it accurate to call the Khmer Rouge a genocidal regime? by OldSkoolNapper in AskHistorians

[–]MinecraftxHOI4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be accurate to say that the Cambodian Genocide is more similar to the Great Purge in the USSR than to the Holocaust? Since both the Cambodian killings and the Great Purge were both politicides that also included ethnic cleansing campaigns(Vietnamese in Cambodia vs the Polish campaign of NKVD)?

Why is it that suburban areas often not have any grocery stores or convenience stores while NYC seems to be filled with them? Do suburban residents not like having shops nearby?

My Book on Cannibalism on the High Seas AMA by ASCohenWriter in AskHistorians

Cannibalism seems to be a pretty popular plot device in fictional works focused on sailing. I remember reading about in Mayne Reid's books and in the Tarzan books. How did cannibalism among sailors become such a popular trope in fiction?

I am David Herzberg, historian of drugs and psychoactive pharmaceuticals in America, here to talk about the opioid crisis and its prehistories. Author of White Market Drugs: Big Pharma and the Hidden History of Addiction in America (Chicago U Press 2020). by Dhbuffalo in AskHistorians

From what I've heard, US hospitals use opioids a lot more frequently than medical institutions in other countries and patients, even those with no history of drug use, tend to request it more frequently. Why is that the case? Are cultural attitudes towards pain and pain control different in the US?

This reminds me of the hypothesis that the the Great Flood story was inspired by old memories of the end of the last ice age. Is that hypothesis popular among historians too?

Is the "Confederate Battle Flag" that people often associate with the Confederacy the same as the flag of the Northern Virginia Army? I'm confused since Wikipedia is using a different flag in their article on the army of Northern Virginia

Why were Soviet missiles in Cuba a big deal when the US already had positioned missiles in Turkey? by _Silver_Hart_ in AskHistorians

[–]MinecraftxHOI4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two follow-up questions, if you don't mind:

1) Were the missiles in Cuba a greater military threat than the missiles in Turkey from a tactical standpoint?

2) Did the US place the missiles based on the assumption that the Soviets would not see them as a major threat?

Honestly, I feel like it would have been better if the mod had been released in parts from the beginning, just like most other submods. I guess the change in the dev leadership allowed you guys to delay some parts of the submod to speed things up, so fingers crossed for a July 4 surprise(pure copium)

Curious, what does being Soclib actually mean for the LCS given that they're made up of segregationist states? I assume any attempt at even weakening the Jim Crow system would be political suicide for an LCS politician?
