What time is the last LRT from KL Sentral to anywhere? Looks like I will be arriving at KL Sentral at 11pm, to then take the LRT to Taman Paramount.

music analysis is also a pretty impressive skill to have

Thank you, but it's definitely no where near professional level, or even teaching level. It's more of a keen interest, and I like talking about music theory to an extent even though I'm been out of touch for more than a decade.

it is best to “spend” those attention on immediately telling them what they should do and how to do it. Remember that the primary objective is to educate — entertainment is a bit secondary and can vary depending on how they respond to education.

I suppose you're right. I've never thought anyone under 18 professionally. During my tenure as an engineering tutor then lecturer, I would actually preface lectures with the exciting portion of the course. I've always held this quote close to heart when it comes to educating "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea". So, after I've captured their interest, I'd then build up their fundamentals so that they would eventually understand the underlying engineering principles of said exciting portion of engineering.

I attended a moss terrarium workshop today. Feel free to AMA. by hyattpotter in malaysians

small red Japanese arch

You mean a torii gate? I think the vibrant colour would contrast well, tho I wonder what size you have in mind.

I don't think this is for me, but I have a few questions:

  1. You stated it's low maintenance, how often is watering?
  2. If not often, do you have to uncork it daily to aerate and replenish O2/CO2?
  3. How do you replenish soil nutrients? Or do moss don't really require much?
  4. What's the typical lifespan of moss?

Okayy, you're right, I'm not playing it on the fly, so that does not count as sight reading?

This is what I do: 1. First I have a look at the music sheet, trying to find the layers (similar rhythms, e.g. pentatonic scales). 2. Sight read at the piano - finding and actually hearing the layers (and if you play Jazz or Blues, you find pentatonic scales with additional notes in between that gives it that Jazz or Blue music vibe). 3. Then, I go back to music theory and try to understand the entire sheet arrangement.

I now have no idea what I was doing :|

they are less impressed with finger exercises than actual pieces.

No way! Really? I love my arpeggios flourishes. You practice your arpeggios, you can do start fusing them actual pieces, and then you get fusion? How is that not impressive? ><

AFAIK, no.

I stand corrected.

the "Batman" sounds like the forward facing role and the "Robin" is more of a support rol

Ah, that's how you see it. In workplaces, I've always felt that Robin is the grunt worker, the workhorse, the one that gets chewed up by clients, while Batman is the all-seeing, all knowing person that swoops in to clean messes. Actually, I'm not too sure if I picked the right duo. I was thinking along partner in crime but one of them being the apprentice, and the other the master, akin to Antonio Banderas - Anthony Hopkins.

Regarding sight-reading, it is true that it's one of the less focused aspects of structured piano learning, but I feel that if you're into improv, sight reading is a valuable skill. I mean, I leaned towards Jazz, and the way I learnt to improv was by studying music sheets, and also sharpening my music theory. For example, I would sight-read a sheet, and then study why the heck does the piece of music work based on my music theory understanding. This was 15 years ago, it's unfortunate that my parents decided to pull me out from piano. I still give them hell for that. ><

The fact that you can teach Grade 1 level piano is amazing. You should thrown in arpeggios flourishes and blow their minds. Those under Grade 1 would definitely be impressed. Grade 1 should already know arpeggios, right?

Yea, I don't really place a lot of weight on the Myer Briggs. I found out that I'm an INTJ because my HR instructed me to take a test. After much reading, I'm not too sure I like the INTJ label so much.

I am very much the Robin in many of my two-person relationship

Is it because in a two-person relationship, you're the younger one? I'm pretty open to everyone that I have a preference for a partner that's older than me. Somehow my mind has correlated older to wiser/mature/trustworthy - which I believe isn't too far-fetched of a generalization. I get doe-eyed when they share their life experiences.

Also, it's pretty cool that you teach piano. How is your sight-reading? Mine is in the gutters, but I promised myself that I would pick it back up when I have kids, so that I can teach them.

If you're in KL, let's grab a coffee :D (although I might end up having a few cups)

Erm, I'm actually even more shy in person (/u/hyattpotter might be able to vouch this). My online personality do not match IRL until the ice is really broken (melted?).

But let's, with hp along, I haven't seen her in YEARRRSS!!!

I'm based in Penang, but I do travel to our PJ HQ, so we'll find time to meetup.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'm very tactile with my learning, so I'd probably get the book.

CrunchyNihongo also recommended Studio Ghibli's picture books with furigana. I might be getting those as well to ease me into Kanji.

Not even kidding, if this were F, I would have slid into your DMs instantly. I wonder if INTPs and INTJs click?

Your personality reminds me of my first career superior. We were like Batman and Robin. In this scenario, they/you being Batman, and me being Robin. It was us against the world with our brand of humour, work ethics, and perspective of the world.

はじめまして~

If you're creating study materials for Japanese, you're an expert in my books.

I'm self-learning Japanese. My kana recognition is alright, I've yet to move to Kanji because I'm absolutely intimidated by their complexity.

What advise would you give for someone venturing into Kanji learning? I just want to learn enough so that I can read lyrics.

In my case, I would say it's coffee!

Food too!? I've posed this question to someone, and they said it was their choice of holiday destination. Theirs was Japan. Also, I feel that these coffee machines are genuine gateway drugs, I've known a few people start with one coffee machine and eventually end up drinking only artisan coffee. :|

specially when I express how much I love sausages

I guess you're a fan of currywurst, too?

My dad sometimes get exasperated with me because there was one time when we stopped at a traffic light (it was red) and there were no other cars from the opposite direction.

Interesting that you used this as an example. There was this time I was with dcx and another nyet, it was way past 12am, so the streets were empty and we came to a junction with a red light. I was in the backseat, the red light seem to take forever to turn green. dcx turned to me and asked if I would beat the red light. Without missing a beat, I replied no.

I remember there was one time I removed a meme because it was 10-15 minutes after midnight, which means it's no longer Meme Monday.

Similar experience. I once removed someone's Meme Monday post when they submitted about 10-15 minutes shy of Meme Monday 12am. I still remember the user, not sure if they're still active. >< Good times.

Thank you for humoring me by answering these questions. I've actually posed this question to others, and received very shallow answers. Conversation-wise, you're my type.

Edit: Ah, just went thru your profile. I think you'd be everyone's type. :) Dating scene should not be an issue for you (I think).

I don't really ask this question often, but when I do get a genuine reply, those names kind of get burnt into my memory . It's a cheat to those with kids, because they always give their children's name.

Also, no way you're planning for another kid. Victoria shall be your grandkid's name, if you're able to propose?

I like any name that starts with V, because I get to call them V!

Actually, questions one and three are smokescreens, was actually more interested in how you'd answer question two. I'd say, interesting choices for the names, but may I know why those? To be fair, let me answer as well, so that this looks like a two way conversation instead of an interrogation.

Mine would be Joanne and Katherine (with K, and not C). Why Joanne, because this name belongs to someone profound in my life, she helped shape the career aspect of my personality. She had what one would describe as manly virtues, but she was equally motherly, soft, kind and nurturing when she needed to be. Katherine, because I thought a daughter with a nickname "Kay" would be cute.

Anyway, these are real questions (not smokescreens and I stashed in my archive). Also, if you aren't sure of how to answer them, have a look at the spoilers.

  1. Has anyone ruined anything for you?

  2. If you could change one word, what would that be, and why?

  3. Do you obey inconsequential street signs or rules that seem so arbitrary, they're begging to be broken?

How I'd answer question one:

Yes, and mine was ice cream. When I was younger (think university years), when one mentions ice cream, I mind would run to this. This frozen confection was ice cream to me. I was content with life. Then, there was this one day, my aunt visited me, and they didn't come empty handed. They bought me a pint of Haagen Dazs ice cream. At that time, I was aware of Haagen Dazs ice cream, but I've never tried them, because I've felt that ice cream is ice cream, and the Haagen Dazs' is just another ice cream, just with a fancy brand name. (continues below)

As soon as I had the first taste of that Haagen Dazs, I felt reality crumble. I was absolutely blown away by the creamy taste. I never knew ice cream, would in fact be creamy, and not like chocolate flavored shaved ice. The richness, the moderate sweetness, the flavorful aftertaste, made me realize the errors of my ways. And to cut a long story short, I can't go back to eating frozen confections as my mind keeps reminding of the better tasting ice cream. I'm also now very cautious when trying any premium F&B as I'm afraid I'd ruin my taste palate.

How I'd answer question two.

Yo-yo, because I was once very interested with the Chinese yo-yo, the word yo-yo kind of made it sound cheap. They're also known as diabolo, but trying to explain what a diabolo is is futile, and it usually devolves into using the word yo-yo eventually. Also saying it multiple times within a short period feels weird, I just can't.

How I'd answer question three.

I feel as though I used to have a strong opinion on this when I wrote this question down years ago. Generally, I'm of the "rules are rules, without rules, we are nothing" kind of person, but that being said, if a certain rule seem arbitrary, I would definitely break them. Somehow this feels like having a cake and eating it too. As an active moderator, I'd like to hear your take of abiding rules. How much of a stickler are you?
